Ok, we all need MUCH more of this. Honestly the cost of a motor seems so much more attainable with what you’re doing. Keep them coming.
Also, nice production quality. Can’t wait to see more.
Thank you so much! Means a lot to have that part of the job recognized. I make money obviously however I love helping people get out on the water with a reliable engine without giving an arm and a leg…
Ok seriously. I need more! You do a great job of teaching me. This is what so many videos miss. I watch because I want to learn how to do it myself. You're approach of sticking to identifying the little things first is a great approach I always need reminded of. Great videos and details. Keep it up.
Really appreciate that Michael!! More on the way coming soon!!

Been doing this since I was 14 years old. Served me well for all of my life.
Fun hobby and pays nicely!
Please make more videos!
I’m working on a 55 HP Evinrude my grandad gave me before he passed away (plus the 16 ft aluminum boat it came on). It bogs down when I get into higher gear but starts up fine. It’s very sentimental to me. This video was encouraging!
Making them as quick as I can!! Really appreciate the support. And yeah that’s a very common issue on the old 2 strokes, just sounds like you have a bit of dirt stuck in the high speed jet on your carburetor. Cleaning the carb should solve your issue! Either that or you have an air leak somewhere between your gas tank and the motor 👍🏼 make sure gas tank is vented as well. Also if it’s just a bit of dirt in the high speed jet many times you can just buy a can of seafoam and mix it with your gasoline and let it run for a bit. Seafoam will clean your jets and sometimes you can get lucky and not have to pull the carb off at all! (Although I always recommend removing it and thoroughly cleaning it). Best of luck to you!! Always available on instagram to give you any advice you need to get your granddads motor running. He’d be proud 👍🏼

You paid $200 for a 6HP outboard that you didn’t know was even working?!?!??

Just a heads up. When you check compression take out all the spark pugs out and check with all removed. Those engines with 75# would have measured 100# and thats a more accurate number. You should have also been able to sell that 25 merc for 1800-2200, those are solid engines
love the little evinrude
I have that exact same merc 3.5hp motor & the carb jets are absolutely tiny & get clogged easily! Best to run it out of fuel if it's going to be sitting for any length of time
Great advice! I appreciate it 👍🏼
I am building a 1648 panfish stick steer. I could really use some advice on what prop to get for a 25hp mercury 2 stroke from the 80's. I cannot find what came on the old bass tracker panfish. As far as weight. I will be lighter than the tracker panfish overall. Any advise will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Great video man! I have a five horse Coleman four stroke that is giving me fits trying to get it running. It has good fuel pressure good compression good spark every once in a while when I’m trying to pull it yanks the cord out of my hand… any ideas? Sheared flywheel key maybe? Out of time? Who knows! Wish you were my neighbor!
Thanks for the support man! DM me on instagram - same username as CZcams and send me any videos you have of the issue if possible. I will admit I have never owned or worked on a Coleman before, don’t see too many of them but they all work the same more or less. Great to get them running but the problem you will get is the lower crankcase lip seals get hard and los their elasticity and fail soon 😮with age 😊😊
on the merc, all u had to do was connect the harness, cross the black and black/yellow stripe to kill it

Cool vid. The majority of 2 stroke outboards I buy not running the blocks and lowers are always solid. Pretty quick to get them going good.
Used to flip them in high school. 3 days ago I bought a 06 Suzuki 140HP 4 stroke all rigging 2 ss props + extra lower unit and controls for $800. Guy swore it was a solid motor but didn’t have it on a stand to show it ran.
175 psi across the board no water in oil. Turned on and ran flawless first key flip. Worth $3k-4k. Great vid
***Only lesson I learned in my 27 years. Don’t buy one from any young person. Get burned almost every time
As long as it has compression - I can make it run… but yea I love the ones that fire right up - the best feeling! Also don’t give all youngsters a bad rep! I’m only 24 😅😅
@@BoatBusters “youngsters 20 or under”. I remember what I did to those engines I would run religiously at that age. Being a broke 16 year old with a healthy motor was never a good match. Couldn’t afford the gas let alone the oil.
A youngin will lie right to your face and says it runs perfect. 30-40yo in a half decent area for the most part are honest and take way better care.

G'day BB, why do some lakes have a minimum HP of 9.9 is it to do with speed and erosion to the banks or insurance? thanks I thoroughly enjoyed this video 👍.
Thank you!! And there’s really not a lot of info out there about the origins of the restrictions, but I believe it was because certain lakes were originally used as sources of drinking water and the law originated with the EPA. But it also could very well be due to the general size and depth. Not 100% sure! Thank you for the support though!
DNR in my state would take that to an inbound lot. Have fun getting it back.😂
You’re welcome for that (9.9) 😂

Hey man I just got a 1986 evinrude 2 stroke motor and it ran fine when I got it maybe a week ago and the 3rd time I started it it would only start with the stick all the way in forward and even then it was taking my 1648 jon about 6 miles an hour, I’ve got good compression on both cylinders, have spark, rebuilt carb several times, any ideas what it could be? Thank you this is killing me, it’s my first boat and I’m a little lost
Sounds like an issue with the float in your carb. Usually no start unless wide open is a tell tale sign that your carburetor is flooding the cylinders. Too much gas to ignite until you open the throttle and the extra air will allow it to start. Since this is your first boat, a very common beginner mistake is not having your gas tank vented. Gas tanks have a vent on the lid that has to be open to let pressure out. Vent the gas cap and unscrew it to let pressure out before connecting your fuel line. What happens is the pressure builds in the gas tank then you release it into your engine and the pressure from not being vented will force excess gasoline into your motor. So first and foremost make sure your gas tank is vented properly. Next thing make sure your primer bulb is facing the right direction! There’s usually an arrow to indicate correct direction of fuel flow. Lastly, just because you rebuilt the carbs does not mean the float is set correctly. They need to be set manually and are not pre-adjusted “out of the box” … the float must be level and there is a line on it to mark how high / low it needs to be. There is a test (no tools required) to make sure your float is closing properly, I demonstrate it in my most recent video!! Also these motors run surprisingly well on only one cylinder. I would get a gap tester and make sure spark on all cylinders can jump a 7/16” gap. If you have any more questions or need more help I’m always here as a resource for my CZcams community- feel free to DM me on instagram (same username) and I’ll help you work through your issues best I can!
You and i could be friends, i love buying boats, putting some work in them and bringing them back to life
Let’s be friends man!!! Always trying to connect with likeminded people
Did you check the impellers on both evinrudes? Both didn’t seem to be pumping much water?
I have a larger tank that I test impellers in, the muffs were leaking on the 9.9 and the 6 the water was barely above the intake. Both were much stronger in the deep tank but I unfortunately didn’t film that. Good eye though! Was waiting for someone to call that out…
Awesome channel. Subbed. Cheers from Sweden.

Where did you get/how did you make that spark tester?
On Amazon for $6 ! Dirt cheap
Where are you located and is the 25 mercury available?
I’m based in Ohio, but unfortunately it has sold! I typically won’t post the video unless I’ve sold everything already…
Can you do a lower unit race removal and install?
@@BoatBusters I got a mercy 50 hp and it has the shaft bearing race and the gear drive that has a race that I need out.. lol

Where can I get that compression tester, and spark tester?
I get them on Amazon! The compression gauge is $15 and the spark tester is $6… I always recommend going for higher quality gear if you can afford it- but neither of them have ever done me wrong… proper engine diagnostics for a $20 bill (I’m cheap)
We’re I am at buy Lake Erie there is only a few folks that work on outboard motors I usually charge hundred dollars per hour and I got people lined up every one else is charging a few hundred dollars per hour only sad thing is are summer are short living close to the Canadian shore line

This just shows how much prices vary by area, Around here anything under 9,9hp is a tiygh sell running or not and a $100 motor at best. 9.9 and 15hp 2stroke motors bring $1k or better in season, about half of that in cold months. Larger remote motors are hit or miss, generally smaller 2 strokes are hard to find buyers for, larger 115 and up motors do better. Mercury in general is harder to sell then OMC.
The fish police here gave a buddy a ticket a few years ago for running a Honda 100 (10hp), on a 9.9hp restricted lake. Although to game warden mistook the Honda 100 decals as meaning '100hp, a judge upheld the ticked because even 10hp is over the 9,9hp limit. It cost him over $700 when it was al done. I have four of those motors and have run them there for 30yrs or more without issue but they chose to pic on an 80 year old man that day for some reason. I've simply changed the "100" labels on mine to '9.9hp' since then.
That’s insane… yeah there’s a lot of variance in price for sure.. also, seriously?? 9.9 and 10 Hp are the same thing… writing a ticket to anyone for that is disgusting, especially for an old man. Really sucks to hear that
4 engines bought at somewhat liquidation prices, all having water-tight lower units and clean carbs ? You must be living in Unicorn country. Take care and happy used outboard hunting !
Love your work mate 👍 new sub from Australia 🇦🇺
My grandfather had one of those old Evinrude 2 strokes. It was a long shaft model cos he had a deep V hull tinnie running up and down the Murrumbidgee River here in country NSW. Used to ring its tits off screaming down the river 😅
I love that! These old 2 strokes bring back a lot of memories for me as well… and they just sound so much cooler!
Cool two strokes but unfortunately I live in California and there are very few lakes that allow two strokes on them!
California is the no fun zone from what I’m hearing! 😂
That Evinrude 9.9 would fetch $1,200 where I’m at in Texas. Non running 9.9 Johnson/Evinrude go for $300-$500.
Wow 1200 is crazy! Never seen $1,000+ for a 2 stroke 9.9 before up here… 4 strokes are a different story though!
@@BoatBusters part of the reason for the high price is they’re seen as collectibles now. A lot of people are looking for old school Johnson/Evinrude 9.9/15 hp 2 strokes. In some parts of the country you can pic them up fairly cheap, in other parts they fetch a premium.
@@Will97675 sounds like a business opportunity to be had there 🤣
You good get da money sell it
Hi good sir what can you tell me about my issue I have a 89 150 blackmaxx the issue is it's peeing but not a steady stream it's more like spitting... I've change thermostats and water pump impeller this is my first boat and not too much knowledge on 2 stroke motor
That’s very common on the larger Mercury motors if you are using the water hose muffs at home. When you are on the water riding it in the lake does it still just spit? You can also fill a large barrel with water at home so it’s well above the intake and put it in gear and raise the RPMs. It should turn to a good strong stream submerged in water. If it still is not peeing on the lake and you’re confident your water pump and impeller is good, you may have some dirt or sand in your pick up tube or water lines. You can try to take some thin wire and run it through the pee hole and see if there’s any blockages. However I’m betting that you’re just using muffs in the driveway and most of the time that just isn’t enough for those beefy motors. Good luck!!
@BoatBusters thanks yea I did all that poke it with trimmer wire took it to the lake thinking it's the muffs but same so I'll check the pickup do you think the water jacket have anything to do with it?
@@hmongxwb88 it could. It’s definitely the most uncommon and rare issues with water pumping and is always the last thing you should check though - it’s a huge pain. If you only replaced the impeller I would replace the entire water pump housing and seals as well, and make sure you did the water pump job correctly. There’s usually a key on the shaft that locks the impeller in place and it’s very small and easy to miss. If you don’t have that, it won’t work right. My last thing I will recommend you do: thermostats open and close based on temperature. I recommend completely removing all of your thermostats and then putting the housing back on but with no thermostats inside. Then try to run it. If the water stream is fine, then your thermostat job wasn’t done correctly, you got bad parts, or your motor just hasn’t gotten hot enough for a full stream. But remove your thermostats, replace the housing, and see if that fixes the issue. You do not want to run your motor for extended periods of time without thermostats, but it will not harm your engine at all to fire it up without them for diagnostic purposes.
Ok thanks a bunch I will do that before the hard stuff and yea I replace the whole waterpump assembly and went off some videos on how to do it thanks again
@@hmongxwb88 you bet. And water stream is not the only indicator, use a laser thermometer while it’s running. If it’s within proper operating temperature and not getting too hot then you’re fine 👍🏼
You forgot to add/change the grease in steering axle.
