Although Brian didn’t tie them together, I think he was very consistent that mythical story telling and music and art all provided an evolutionary advantage because they allow us to think beyond the the immediate needs of food, shelter, and security. I would consider all of them a form of story telling, the artist, musician, or story teller trying to convey their thoughts to others.

I have been fascinated with Brians grapple with consciousness over these last few years. I have heard him say dogs are not conscious to the extent we are but of course they are and suffer from many of the same psychosis humans do. In recent years there have been experiments testing plants consciousness or you may prefer to call it learned behaviour - where they learn very quickly that being dropped (in a pot) does not need to set off their defences - and then this learned behaviour is "remembered" for over a year (so far). Our consciousness effects water and plants shown in simple experiments that I look forward to Brian explaining one day as he continues his grapple 🙂 - great book btw - I bought the audio copy.

At first I didn't think I heard you right.
When Brian is asked by Janna about his understanding of spirituality, he
    says an evasive stammering yes-sure-yet.
But then there is Brian's explanation of how evolution works in biology.
    The biological evolution.
And his derived insight that this model is transferable to the evolution
    of atoms to molecular structures.
    Molecular evolution.
Now that he's managed to expand the concept of evolution, to generalize
it, the genie is out of the bottle.
This explanation now offers itself also to look one step deeper to the
genesis of the elementary particles to the atoms,.
    The atomic evolution.
And it also points in the other direction, upwards. The explanation of
consciousness how arises from life. Its great breadth and depth levels
in the various forms of life.
    The evolution of consciousness.
Also the next level in the hierarchy, the one from consciousness to the
world of abstract mental entities, inevitably arises. The world of the
sciences, the arts and the world of philosophical constructs.
    The Mental Evolution.
And from here it is now only one more step to reach spirituality without
mysticism and without the help of religious transcendence.
    The Spiritual Evolution.
    Remarkable.
From elementary particle towards Spirituality, from each step to the
next the inescapably and restless work of evolution.

Great interview! I absolutely adore Brian Greene and his thought processes. THANK YOU for sharing this on CZcams.
    Thoughts about this amazing conversation.
!) Brian's brother: "Yeah. Veda text #12." Hahahaha! Love it. Science and religion dancing the tango between two brothers. Great answer by the Dahli Lama.
    2) Empire State Building metaphor. And... after that last floor, another big bang and another cycle is born? Kind of like a spinning torus that turns inside out on itself.
    3) Free will. Soooo.... since we live in this grand cause-and-effect of all of creation consciousness of varying degrees of self awareness, one COULD say there is no free will. Yet, we can also look at it through the lens of our free CHOICE-how we react to stimulus in our lives with either fear, hate, love, acceptance, respect, etc. Those choices create our individual small cause-and-effect dynamics that make up a part of the whole cause-and-effect.
Bottom line, the idea of a majestic beauty to it all that goes beyond words resonates and I appreciate Brian Greene's take on it. Thirty five years ago, I asked in meditation to be shown infinity. I patiently waited until a kind of door in consciousness opened up and I got a glimpse of it. There are no words that could even begin to describe it-infinite, omniscient, Unconditional Creation Love are poor descriptions, but ones that I use for want of better words. The vibrations that accompanied it were so intense in my body, they literally jolted me off the bench I was sitting on. My view of the world has never been the same since. How could it? It's when I first felt infinitely grateful to be a participant in the orchestra of life.

It was Leibnitz who coined the term "optimism" which he originally defined as "This world, is the best of all possible worlds God could have created"
I share Brian's optimism about the end of time. Not because it ends, but because we were able to experience it in the first place. This world is truly awesome if you take the time to realize it.

You can't buy it here in Belgrade and i don't work couse for last five years I have multiple sclerosis, barely walk, just siting in my room and watch scientific panels thanks to greatest invention ever: internet. I aleady read parts of Brians book in digital form but I want it in paper, some thing that i can phisicaly interact with

It is always difficult to say in the USA: "I am not religious, I am an atheist." Brian Green says it in a very diplomatic way. On the other side, his opinion that consciousness emerges from the movement and interactions of atoms in our complicated network, called brain, is great and true for sure. Everything comes from the laws of nature. Thanks, Mr Green.

So I have a question. The decision to steal someone's property or kill someone also came from movements of atoms. Also decision to act kind came from the same movements. If there is no free will, are there morals?? Sorry for bad english

One his earlier questions is about why we evolved to think and speak in abstract & artistic ideas, rather than in pure facts. At 1:01 he answers. Our ability to rearrange ideas gives us the intrinsic creativity to replace old answers with better ones.
