It is also "buy now" vs. "buy over time". If you have the budget: feel free to do so. If you have not the financials to buy now, calculate a credit from the bank or where ever to buy now and the increase of the cost due to the interest one has to pay.
Also GW will probably will have one to two price increases before or over the runtime of that subscription.
But that are just my 2 cents as an economist who only see the valid argument in "do one really want to own all 9 CP+ or not".

For me, imperium helped me actually hobby. Instead of buying discount boxes I had grand plans for and then not starting. It laid it all out for me. Learned how to take a manageable set of models, not having to develop a paint scheme, paint something table top then come back later to add to. When I get busy and don’t hobby for a few weeks I can just go back to following where I left off. Even taught layering, weathering ect. for painting.
I kept track of costs, there are extra costs too. Savings aren’t great but for me it takes all the fuss out of planning you just have to walk out to mailbox once a month.
I maybe hobby 1-2hrs a night, 3 days a week. Imperium came over 2 years. Painting for me will be 3 years at my pace, didn’t do any of the game portion but there is probably similar hobby time in that if you want.

The real value comes when adding in the premium. I didn't run the numbers in each currency, but when calculating for the US prices on the models, we are saving over 25% about $500 off the standard 15% off discounted rate. This isnt counting the paints and extras. If theres any units you dont like, I'm sure you could resell and break even. If you like Combat Patrol I think this is still a pretty good deal. If you would rather have one really big army instead I would say pass on it. If you skip on the premium the value drops quite a bit.

I was subscribed to Imperium and I ended up dropping it after 30 issues. I ended up with more stuff that I didn't really want than stuff that I did.
Overall though, I think the idea of 9 combat patrols is a great idea. With a magazine like this I'd rather have an even variety of stuff rather than two big armies. There's a lot more stuff in here that I do actually want than there was in Imperium, but I'll stick with picking up individual issues here and there rather than subscribing again. As for the premium subscription, I already own 3 of the items and I have no interest in the ones I don't have.

What people do keep missing in reviews of this is the other option - find a retailer who stocks it and cherry pick the ones you want. Forbidden Planet let you preorder a fair few issues in advance online, so if you're quick you can get stuff that way - alternatively if you've got an FP store near you then you can just pop in where they tend to get a lot of restocks and a fair few copies of most issues. FP near me also gives you a 10% discount if you have a Uni staff or student card. I'm lucky enough for one to be on my route home from work so I just pop in on the way home and see what's in. I think quite a few Tesco and WH Smiths also stock them, although it can be tougher to find them.
If you can do that, the savings on the best models in this release are significant - Like I play Votann and since I already have an army I don't need another combat patrol - I'm just paying for a kahl and some warriors I don't want or need, but if it's say £20 over 2 issues (£18 w. discount) for a set of 3 Bikes then I'll be getting 6 of em. I also play Necromunda so some of the vehicles like the GSC Goliath and Atalan Jackals are excellent conversion fodder for that. The Boomdakka Snazzwagon in particular is on a single sprue so for £10 (£9) a pop I'll pick up a couple of those, but don't need to bother with any of the other Ork stuff.
Also the non-combat patrol unit for each faction is undoubtedly a good deal - Like the Space Marine combat patrol is crap, but the Chaplain on Bike is an awesome model and at £10 you're getting him for a 61% discount over even the cheapest 3rd party prices.

Depends, for me, I went with the imperium premium, that gave me 2 full armies + 6 more to dabble in as pallet cleansers. This subscription would fill out the rest of those 6 armies to almost 1000pts, and give me more options for necrons and SM. Id double up on the GSC issues if you can. Taking into account that its now 90 issues instead of 80 it seems, if you got the tyranids and space marines in the starter box (Contains SM cp + tyranid cp) and the rest as combat patrol (ignoring the extras). You actually pay more money to get the models from the magazine if thats all your interested in (assuming you buy from a local retailer instead of Gw which is about 20% off). Even taking into account the premium addition and ignoring the extras you only actually get a 7% discount ontop of the retailer 20%. However this could be an amazing thing for single pickups for example if you play orks and all the boys come in one magazine. Where this sub likely comes into its own is two main areas Newer players (but I doubt any new player would put that much in) or people who would prefer to take the £40 monthly for non-premium. Hopefully some of the sprues will be great to pick up by themselves in store. E.g if the terminators are all in one £10 for 5 terminators is great or if all 10 boys comes for £10 thats amazing for orks. Its also worthwhile to consider that some previous vehicles/walkers such as the dreadnought have came across 3!! magazines before.

I've never fallen into the trap of these subscriptions. Imperium nearly got me. After getting the Indomitus box, Imperium was a nice way to build on that and work my way towards having 2 HUGE armies. But eventually, I decided I did not need that and in fact, I'd rather use that money to buy a new army. I was getting into Eldar around that time and was tempted by Tau too. So I bought a start collecting for both Tau and Eldar, saving hundreds of pounds in the process and decided not to go any further with any of those factions (Necrons and Marines included.) So if Imperium and the idea of owning two humongous armies didn't entice me in, offering me 9 small armies I mostly don't want, need or even like, wasn't going to do much

It's not for people who want to play 40K at full scale. It's for people who want to play Combat Patrol. "Buy all the combat patrols" is a legitimate way to engage in the game. It's a different game mode, presumably we will also get printed copies of the rules for it (and expanding out to the extra mini for each faction) in the magazine. Honestly if you don't have a regular group of people already playing full-scale 40K, it's probably a far better way to get "into" the game than just picking one army and building it up to 2000 points. You end up with what's basically a board game with nine interchangeable factions. Much easier to teach to someone the basic combat patrol rules and the rules for the figures included. Plus more interesting to paint and build nine different things.
It's the worst of these partworks for anyone already playing 40K, by far. But I think it's the best for anyone wanting to start playing, that doesn't have easy access to a wargaming group already.
(Or put more simply, no-one thinks it's particularly weird to have 9 or so Kill Teams right? They're closer in size to a Kill Team than a 2000 point army)

For the most part i agree, subscription is dubious at best, a fair chunk of the savings are taxed back in the paint issues.
I do think this is a good run for a select few, guard, cults and votann players, all of whom have the bulk of their ranges represented here, and of course anyone interested in playing any of those factions, this is your opportunity to get all your basic troops, essentially at the cheapest they will ever be again.
For my needs, I'm genuinely considering a triple subscription for the first 20ish issues, but I'm the crazy eccentric type (basement dweller) and I'll be taking the opportunity to bulk out my Tyranids, and completing that surge with three hive tyrants and three brutalis is just perfect for me.
To reinforce how unique my position is I will be fulfilling the following projects during this run.
    Infantry guard army
    Infantry traitor guard army
    Genestealer cults army
    Genestealer cults mounted army
    Beil tan stormwind army
Defkopta army (sure it's only 18 defkoptas, but a fun 1000pts core)
Bulking out my word bearers, especially the havocs, berzerkers and maulerfiends.
Building a deathwing army (the best time to do so)
hitting every spammable limit for every marine unit available in this set (not joking, I will be buying 30+ copies of issue 1 so I can take 30 deathwing knights and have new sculpt tyranid warriors).
the core of a votann army
Possibly enough atlan jackals to make a cadian rough riders army (probably just part of the guard army tbh).
If you've read this far this is in earnest, but I also intend to wake people up to possibilities and also to my crippling addiction to plastic.
This magazine is not for everyone, but it's perfect for my way of hobby, so I'm showing the extremes for what they are.

Not the best maths or logic in this breakdown I'm afraid plus it relies on someone subscribing for the whole lot to help you point. It ignores being able to start and end subscriptions at chosen times and buying magazines individually from shops or the website directly.
Just because it's not a good deal for you doesn't mean it's poor value for everyone.

I did the last two 40k hatchet subscriptions and the experience I had puts me off alone! They took the money on different dates and some months they took two as the dispatched two lots in one month! There customer services are based abroad, France I think and the line was a poor connection and hard to hear, slow to respond to emails especially when they automatically sign you up to extra books or artwork which then adds more to your subscription! I opted out but they were so slow I had them delivered and charged for them, I ended up cancelling imperium subscription after week 36 it got so bad.

Was going to buy it but plenty of third party sellers will typically have some kind of rewards based point system. So ultimately if I combined the 20% discount with the savings from points it would be about the same if not less and I can buy it at my own pace. And if I honestly want a particular model at a discount I can always check to see if the issue it's in is out. It's a great subscription for anyone wanting to start and start hard but not really worth it for anyone well into the hobby.

  • @jimmynicol7942

I might try for a few individual models, but I think I'll pass on subscribing. Maybe sub for the first issue, since Issue 2 is free alongside issue 1. I'm hoping the Boyz are in one issue, since that is an issue I'd want to pick up multiple times. They're kinda low value compared to the old kit due to being monopose and limited loadout, but £10 for £10 really makes it worth it in my opinion.

As someone who does not want all 9 combat patrols. I do bot see the value in this subscription for the first time. Only buying mutiples of certain magazines to save money on a unit or model to add to the colection. But eveb just buying the full set of magazines for a combat patrol loses its value when i add the extra postage cost to each individual issue.

  • @markhickson9087

    Totally agree with this review.
There are only savings to be made if one wants every faction. Selling the same unpopular squads on ebay won't, in my opinion, make the money back. The magazines for popular stuff will be scalped, so aiming to get only the bits you want, again in my opinion and experience from last time, won't work. I don't want the paints.
I'll give this one a miss and maybe pick up anything I want for from the scalppers or those that do want to off load bits they don't want😂.

Why you shouldnt buy this anyway is because of the business model behind it. Just think about it... If they can sell you this stuff for that price and make a healthy profit, why arent they just selling you this straight up? The whole point of this thing is to make you buy stuff you otherwise wouldnt obviously.

I partly agree about the terrible savings on this magazine but you are not building nine armies. The idea of Combat Patrol is to allow new or beginner players to play small games with a set force. No need to worry about being overwhelmed with experienced players affording elite, powerful squads. It is a more even battlefield and you can concentrate on how to play, the rules, the strategies. You can try out a faction that you have not tried to see if you enjoy that style. I do not think this is aimed at the 2,000 point, experienced, tournament players who just want a quick discount.

@@HippoEnjoyer yeah theres deffo at least 1 extra unit per set there, parasite of mortrex isnt in the nid box. The premium models swarmlord and brutalis dread are good value, youre essentially gonna get a pile of stuff for ebay prices without any of the nasty surprises like parts missing etc. Plenty to kit bash plenty to buff up existing armies. The imperium ones you ended up with two 2000+ pts armies More i think about it the more im sold on it.

  • @mn01_
    @mn01_ Před 6 měsíci

So, your premise is that you shouldn’t sub to combat patrol because, assuming you ignore 25% of the content for reasons, you’re “only” getting the models at the same price as hunting eBay for a good deal? Real airtight case lol.
This community loves to be contrarian for the sake of being contrarian. Assuming you want the models in the offering, the Hachette subs are very good deals by any reasonable measure. If one doesn’t want all the models or doesn’t want to wait then the product isn’t a good fit. But that doesn’t have anything to do with the price point.

  • @darthkek1953
    @darthkek1953 Před 6 měsíci

It's less value than other releases, but that does not make it bad? If you want to build "a" army or two, yes, it's terrible. BUUUUT what if you & perhaps some others (brother / dad / mates chipping-in) want to play MINI 40K? I mean to play the actual Combat Patrol element? Now it makes sense. You have 9 factions to play against. What's that, 36 different verses matches? Doesn't have to stop there either. Not only does OPR work really well and quick, and these would fit in perfectly into small OPR games, you have enough models you can make (or reasonably Proximate, perhaps not GW Tournament standard all of them but certainly enough for home) for multiple Kill Teams. For an EXISTING 40K player and army makers, I can't see these as useful. There are simply several or many Combat Patrols you don't want even for novelty/Kill Team/bits of bodies for the bases of your main army. But for a new person and - even better - a small crew (repeat, be they friends and/or family) I see this as better than an army-builder subscription.
My real grievance with this set is they CSM _and_ World Eaters. They should have picked one or the other and given us Custodes Combat Patrol. That might have swayed me to initiate a subscription.

I was gonna say, they should've called this "endorphine rush" magazine, because that's really what it's for. If you love just getting random little presents in the mail every week, this thing is for you. But if you like making intelligent, calculated decisions about your hobby, this is NOT for you.
Personally, I never buy models that I don't intend to use. I refused to buy Leviathan. Great deal, yes, but not for the Tyranids that I do not want!

    Agree 100%
Its a good thing you explained it in detail as well, newer players might not be aware of why this isn't a good offer.
Any army, especially space marines should be started with second hand models until you realize what you really want.
As for the paints, Vallejo is a far superior brand in all respects.
Packaging in dropper bottles with an agitator ball already inside on purchase.
Big color range from historic to game colors, thinners ,mediums and primers.
    18mll for 2.2€ a bottle.
    That's much cheaper as well.
