  • A quick test of the new in between focal lengths, the 40mm and new 65mm, of the Tokina Cinema Vista Primes. Intermediate focal lengths are particularly useful to fill in the notable jump between fields of view and magnification in a prime lineup such as the leap from 35 to 50 or 50 to 85. These two new lenses do exactly that and are useful for both Super 35mm as well as VistaVision formats.
Shot on RED Monstro 8K VV. If you're on a 4K or 8K display, I've uploaded the 8K version here. As always best enjoyed in a dark room with sound on.

The best lens demonstration video I've ever seen, everything that is meaningful portrayed perfectly. Beautifully done

3:50 That subtle green lens flare looks so pleasing unlike many fake effect lens flares. It has that 3D structure, the spherical domes, the first, second and third order diffraction rings.

Very beautiful color and sharpness wide open, focus breathing on the primes basically non existent which is really nice.

Hi Phil beautiful work. Where can your drone footage be licensed. I did see it licenced on a site in Hong Kong. Pleas advise.

I love the green flare, so beauitful, its the kind of thing people spend a week making in CGI/a game engine and it still can't look like that. Is the flare a (warped) representation of the inner structure of the lens?

Yes indeed, it's the dance of light bouncing off the various elements that make up the lens.

Lovely! Do you have any indication that the next one will be slotting in between the 25mm and the 35mm? Or are they going wider than 18mm?

Are these graded with your luts? Just got a set of vistas primes for my Komodo and been really thinking about grabbing your set.

@phil If I was buying only one lens for narrative work which mm would be best as an overall standard?

I would love to see shots of cinema lenses at small apertures, trying to get max sharpness. I know that's the opposite of what's normally done, but like in this scene for example, how many planes of items could you get in tack sharp focus?
