      Yes, Mike had a heart of gold beneath the tough exterior. I loved his relationship with Hilda, he was kind to her many times, eg slipping her some cash to go on the factory outing to France, and when she 'won' him in a prize draw, and he was so kind to her on their dinner date at a posh restaurant.

      @@matthewa.morgan6214 Oh yes, I'm obsessed, but only with vintage Corrie, I gave up on modern Corrie around 2000, the plots were too depressing! The best years IMO were the legendary Elsie Tanner's second stint on the show, 1976-'84.
      Elsie has to be my all-time favourite character, I love her! But I also love Hilda (of course!), Annie Walker, Vera and Jack Duckworth, Eddie Yeates, Alf Roberts (a big, cuddly teddy bear), Mike and Alma Baldwin (shame they divorced, she was his best partner!) and Ivy's spats with Gail were always good value!

    1:03:07 Funny to see Percy Sugden introduced as George Turner. I recall this same actor also appeared in an earlier episode from the late seventies, as an old pal Rita called on for a loan when Len's building firm faced financial troubles.
    I love the way 'Coronation Street' would recycle actors like this. Peter Dudley who played Bert Tilsley had several bit parts in the show before he landed his leading role. Kevin Webster first appeared as a grotty teenage paperboy who gave Mavis grief in the Kabin, and was warned off by Eddie Yates. Racquel first appeared as a totally different character - a walk on part as a girl Jack Duckworth wanted to rent their back bedroom to, before Vera stopped it! There are no doubt many more examples of actors playing multiple Corrie roles - the Manchester/northern acting scene is a different world to the London one.

    • @alexanderjones9572
      @alexanderjones9572 Před 3 lety +5

      Imagine if George had got together with (and married) Emily after it all went wrong with Arnold! It’d have been the same two actors at no 3 in the nineties-except he’d be a different character, and there’d be no Percy! Would Phyllis still have been after him, tho?

    • @glamdolly30
      @glamdolly30 Před 2 lety +3

      @@alexanderjones9572 Now there's a thought, Percy and Emily as a married couple - as religious as she is, I think she might have ended up divorcing him!
      I didn't know Maureen Lipman had been in Corrie before. Having Googled it, I found the details - she was brought in as Lillian Spencer, a relief manager at the Rovers as you said, in July 2002. Great info! I think I had given up on the show by then, which is why I didn't know!
      I got sick of the bad scripts and even worse acting. In my view it was 'Coronation Street' in name only by the time the ghastly Battersbys arrived in 1997. Worst soap family ever - and Les Battersby was the worst character, played by the unfunny and totally unlovable Bruce Jones. Producers obviously thought he'd be another Jack Duckworth, but they were so wrong. Jack was a bad boy but the viewers adored him. Battersby had no redeeming features at all - not helped by the fact Bruce Jones is a lousy actor. I had the misfortune to meet him once, as a TV booker - he was really playing himself on the Street, a yob, no acting was required!

      It was obviously a verbal 'tic' by the actor Peter Dudley, but I think the catchphrase added to Bert's believability! He was a lovely character who lived for his family, and adored Ivy. She never knew love like Bert's again, he was a gem of a husband who forgave her pretty much anything - even giving birth to mummy's boy R. Brian!
      Her second husband, horrible one-legged psycho Don Brennan wasn't a patch on him - on or off screen. Peter Dudley was so popular with cast and crew, they loyally stood by him through his trials (in both senses), whereas Geoff Hinsliff who played Don was by all accounts deeply unpopular with the cast. Lynne Perrie as his wife Ivy wrote some very uncomplimentary things about him in her autobiography, there was no love lost between them and having read it I can see why!
      She claimed he fancied himself as a ladies' man, was always moaning that Ivy was too old for him, and would badger the producers to write in affairs for his character Don as he felt he deserved more exciting storylines. Lynne also alleged he would pull actors' tricks to steal the limelight from her when they were playing scenes together.
      I just looked at his Wikipedia entry, and noticed that an unflattering line which referenced his unpopularity behind the scenes with cast and crew has been deleted! I also noticed it states he has a daughter who is a national newspaper journalist - and the article was recently edited. Call me Columbo, but I reckon his little girl may have done a bit of editing for her old dad (who is still going strong at '83-84', according to the ever accurate Wikipedia!)

      Red flags all the way there. Firstly, never, carry valuables in your plastic carrier bags, always, keep them inside your clothing or somewhere on your person which can't easily be pickpocketed or taken. Keep valuables separate, from the rest of your possessions, but also, keep them handy where only, you will know where to find them. Never, take anybody's word for it if they should phone to tell you somebody handed your bag in. If you know where it was handed in, anywhere, even the police station/cop shop, a department store where you were shopping, like poor Bett, looking for bargain buys and things in the sales there. Always, ring the store before, you go flying off to fetch a handbag which isn't there and which you would possibly never see again. Also, never give out your street address unless it is absolutely necessary. If you have been burgled, also, never, touch anything, put a cloth or glove or your sleeve over your hand if you must touch anything before the police are on the scene with Soco and maybe even a dog unit so your fingerprints don't smudge those of the b words who turned your place over. Lastly, for flips sakes, get the locks changed as soon as you clock your keys were taken with your other valuables, windows and doors both. You should be able to raise your letting agent or landlord or at least, ring their emmergency out of hours numbers if you should need to contact them out of hours. I want to get new locks myself for security reasons, but I would have to OK it with my letting agent at the very least if I wanted to change things like locks. A locksmith would come out to you and change a lock in the middle of the night if you needed it.
