- In this episode I smoke a limited edition Peterson, show you a couple of Mark Irwin’s excellent books and read you another bit of Tolkien
If you wish to encourage me with coffee and cakes you can do so here:

(it's possible the cakes will turn magically into pipe tobacco and the coffee may sometimes transform into a dram of something special)
If you'd like to check out MArk Irwin's books they are here:

Right now, this world is harsh and scary, but this little corner of the internet, with its scent of pipe tobacco and shelves bulging with fine books, is a welcoming oasis of kindness and warmth. Thank you, Malcolm, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Completely agree, this channel has quickly become my go to comfort channels. Perfect for cold rainy days indoors.
Right. It’s like a nice grilled cheese sandwich and soup on a rainy day.
Something most of us need these days
Wholeheartedly agree!
Amen. Totally should make a room like that.
I swear this man will have me smoking a pipe before my days in this world are done.
Try vaping first - I hear it’s an excellent gateway into the world of smoking!
@@K1lostreamI hope you’re being ironic. Pipe smoking is nothing like vaping. Pipe smoking is charming, cultured, and engenders contentment and goodwill towards all mankind. Vaping on the other hand is the crude and vulgar habit of the malcontent.
@@simonbrown1486 I was being sarcastic as opposed to ironic, but essentially yes, your hope was not in vain!
@simonbrown1486 Don't try and romanticize smoking lol. Shits gross
@@simonbrown1486In the end you’re still a nicotine junkie 😂
It took one single video from this gentleman to convince me that I need a study full of books and a tobacco pipe collection
So happy to see this channel exploding recently. I lost my dad a couple of weeks ago, and a few days after he passed I randomly disovered your channel. It has been a source of much needed peace for me. Hearing you talk is very relaxing and enjoyable, so I thank you. All the best from Leicester!
sorry to hear of your loss, but glad you've found my little spells in the library
I'm very sorry for your loss Manix. I hope you have fond memories of him.
Sorry brother
The visual of this wonderful gentle man, enjoying a pipe, pint, book in a library and a comfy chair,......made me smile and remember what I thought the wonders of the world used to be. Thank you for the smile you allowed me to have today sir, thank you and be blessed!!!
He’s a real life Bilbo, I love this man. I’d love to relax in his study on a rainy evening smoking a pipe and listening to him read something.
I sure would like to hold that ring... one more time.....
GIVE IT TO ME!!
A cozy feeling always overwhelms me when I come to this channel.
Haha yes. Of course it's all contrived but never mind 😂
Tolkien found some tobacco during the Battle of the Somme, perhaps that was his inspiration for those particular Isengard scenes.
I have just discovered this channel, but I have been searching for a it unknowingly for years.
I pray that I remember as fondly in 10 years, as I do on this day.
Welcome aboard!
Oh, how sweet the smoke doth taste as I read on,
The pipe a solace in this journey so long.
And when I reach the end and turn the final page,
I shall sit back and ponder all that I have waged.
Is it just me, or can you all picture Malcolm living in a hobbit home ? Round door, fireplace roaring, sitting in a comfy chair with a long churchwarden pipe. Takes off his shoes to reveal hairy feet. Welcomes you and offers you something to eat and a pipe. I swear, he’s part hobbit.
Im convinced hes just a very tall hobbit
I think that is the best compliment you can give to someone. @@internaut4257
I forget I’m not in a cozy little hole in the ground every time.
Don't smoke and know nothing of pipes, but by God, how inspiring to know that there are massive coffee table books on individual pipe makers. Simple pleasures, indeed.
As a female pipe smoker who hasn't had the joy of puffing for a couple of weeks (thanks to a wisdom tooth removal) - this video has been a pleasure to view today! Tonight, at last, I'll spend this evening with my Peterson. Not quite as cool as Malcolm's Peterson pipe mind you!
- Your videos are always a joy to view Malcolm, Cheers to the pleasures of smoke & stories 📚
You have my sympathy. I had all four wisdom's removed as well as two sets of Roots. Not a happy experience. Happy Pipping and a drop of the good stuff will certainly aid recovery 😜🍺🍺
Just curious, but how old are you? Most people are quite young when they have their wisdom teeth removed, yet I find it quite odd to picture a girl in her late teens or early twenties smoking a pipe!! 🤷♂️😂
Welcome to the pipe smoking community! Regards!
My sympathies I know how that feels I had all four removed at once and it was a terrible experience but I digress I hope you start to feel better soon!
@@Yawnzee_ I will be honest, the pain wasn't that bad. Most of the discomfort came from the swelling, which was HORENDOUS . Glad it's all in the past now 🙏🙏
Malcolm, only a few days ago I found your videos as I was suffering through the stomach flu. A horrible thing I wouldn’t wish on anyone, honestly. Since then I’ve watched at least 10 of your videos, subscribed, and liked every single one of them. It’s a nostalgic feeling for a video to start and to be welcomed into the host’s study for a conversation. I’d like to thank you for rekindling my love for Tolkien, a love for me that started only a handful of years ago during my college years. I will think of you during my first ever reread!
I haven't smelled a pipe in ages! My great-grandfather smoked a pipe and I vividly recall the wonderful smell and sound of him puffing at the pipe when I was a little girl. I would sit at his feet and watch with interest. An old coal miner from Wyoming who worked too hard for way too little, he didn't say much to us kids, but simply smiled and puffed away. Truly, it's a practice I wish was more prevalent here in the U.S. - we all could use a bit of slowing down to sit, puff, think, and read.
A pipe, pint and a bit of Tolkien! What could be better?
I was having a bad and your voice has put me right at home.
Gave it a like before the video started. That is a really nice and rare Peterson pipe, the celtic silver ring around it is unique, really cool 😎
Thanks for that!
Gentle, gentle… yes, so very glad for these moments. Thank you, Malcolm.
What a beautiful pipe! You rekindled my love for Tolkien and I picked up the books again to read. Thank you for sharing sir and hope all is well! God Bless!
Not to keen on the pipe smoking but hearing you reading again is a lovely thing. Reading will engage your mind in ways you haven't done in a long time hope you enjoy it and keep reading the world has lost that
@@demo3456 I had a wonderful library of books that were taken from me when my house was burglarized while I was away for Christmas about 15 years ago. I had a lot of Tolkien's books and even the Sindarin text book from the University of Utah. It took the pleasure out of reading and recently got back into it. Thank you for the kind words.
@@MastinoNapoletano420 man sorry that happened to you. I had a great trunk of books when I was younger but lost them when my father passed and they sold the house so I understand.
so sorry to hear of the loss of your library - that's tragic
@@MalcolmGuitespell Thank you Mr Guite. Slowly but surely I am rebuilding it. When we fall, we have to rise up again and never give up!
The way you share your love for Tolkien and tobacco is just amazing. I've started to reread the Hobbit because of your videos.
Wow, thank you!
I just finished The Hobbit last night for the first time. You won't regret it. 🍻
Edit: I just realized you said REread haha. Well nonetheless.
Engaging and educational. NB, the Somme will never leave us
So glad CZcams recommended me your channel. Very relaxing to sit back and watch, and your pipes remind me of my grandfather's as a kid. I can still smell the aromas.
Where there is so little positivity in my life, you sir, are a beacon of it. Thank you
Finding this CZcams channel made me go out and buy some pipe tobacco I have a pipe that I bought while I was in Iraq. And I'm going to sit back and enjoy his video and smoke my pipe. God bless
You should try one of those Meerschaum pipes Lee Van Cleef smoked
I just adore these videos. They without fail make me feel relaxed and inspired at the same time. I’d love to go for a pipe and a pint with Malcolm!! 💙👑⚔️🛡️
I love how you always welcome us in and always seem like you’re in the middle of something that you’re willing to put down because we came by. Much love from America.
After a hard day at work in the hospital. One of your stories is just the thing I need to relax.
Thank you, Malcolm. I wish that you still visited Zimbabwe. It would be an honor to be your host. Our country needs people like you … more and more.
Whenever I smoke my pipe I put on one of your videos. This one has been my favourite.
as already said what a beautiful pipe
What a joyous discovery this fine fellow has been.
A bad influence, you are! I've just purchased my first pipe, a Savinelli sherlock with a deep bowl. You make it look so enjoyable, and I adore your readings.
Smoke and think, even on the hard things, as they too shall pass eventually with thought and meditation. Never gone, but pass into memories and the sting will float away. Always have to stay rooted in the simple pleasures…… have a great evening sir.
Thank you for making my evening, Im glad that you made it back home.
You inspired me to finally get into Tolkien, I finished the hobbit in 4 days. It usually takes me about 5 months to get through a book so I must thank you for finally convincing me to experience his stellar work!
you represent the calmness of pipe smoking for me. This is how imagine it - sitting with a book, writing , reading and smoking slowly. It is so romantic.
Your videos are like a living Blake poem that, in the face of so much darkness, show the beauty of the light that still surrounds us. Thank you.
This scene always brings tears to my eyes. Of wonderful people gone but kindly remembered for the bits of their character that drew you to them in the first place. How I will relish Easter all the more when I will light my pipe after this 40 days of remembrance. Thank you for keeping the flame going in my absence! I shall resume with you in just a while longer...soon.
I just got my copies of the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Ordered them not long after I found your channel! Thanks for the amazing vid!
Wonderful!
a pint of gwiness and a bowl-full with old mate, lovely.
I love this guy. Never knew this character in person but this is a great way to make up for such negligence
Sir,
Please carry on with this pipe and book series for as long as you have the strength left within you to persevere
The stem on that is absolutely beautiful. It reminds me of the yellow of Colonel Mortimer's pipe from the movie For a Few Dollars More. My most used pipe has a wonderful, smooth caramel colored stem, which is what attracted me to it in the first place. It took the place of my now nearly 30 year old Dr. Grabow, which I retired some years back.
A lovely Peterson! As a devoted piper and follower of Tolkien; I must have that wonderful book as well!!
Serene smokes
Gary
I'm so happy I found this place.
I listen to a lot of unintentional asmr videos and a lot of Tolkien videos so can only assume that this is what drove the algorithm to suggest this video. My new favourite relaxing CZcams pastime. Thank you Malcolm for bringing some tranquility to the world.
If more of us valued food and cheer above hoarded gold it would be a merrier world...
What a beautiful passage. And I agree this constant concern about one's pipe harks back to his experience in the front.
I live in a small town nestled within the upward sweeping valleys of The Cascade Mountains, and squirrel away many fine tobacco blends alongside my personal pipes... to find solace in the long, wet winter nights. I try my hand at music, and as well, poetry - so finding Malcom is very much like discovering a ready-made friend (be it on the other side of our Earth). My first pipe was purchased at age 18 while reading TLOTR in 1972 ... truly inspired, as so many have confessed throughout the years! I raise a toast to you, dear Malcolm; may the fruit of The Holy Spirit hang heavy on your "boughs" and God's wisdom liberally pour into and through your ready heart!
Lovely thought - Celebrate those people you have shared your life with. Love it….
Thank you so much, Uncle Malcolm! You provide such a welcome respite.
You are very welcome
What a great read, great pipe and most important of all, a great pint.
Glad you enjoyed it
I love this channel. I have picked up smoking my pipe again, and it’s so nice to slow down and take some deep breathes.
A fine passage indeed
You bring me great joy in these hard times
Malcolm would be a awesome narrator.
I also own a version of the 2015 James Fox 135th anniversary, shape 106. It has a similar stem and silver band, but the bowl is green. Really good smoker.
Picked up a couple cheap pipes last season but never really got going with them, but my goodness, discovering your channel today has me digging them out and looking up local tobaccos. Thank you, sir, for your comfortable and fascinating channel, and God bless you! Cheers!
What an excellent find. I truly cherish these videos. I recently lost my grandfather and father to cancer. You remind me of both of them with your love of pipes and magical stories. Thank you for making videos.
I wish you a lovely evening Malcolm, thank you for your reading. Always want you to know how pleasant and lovely and helpful it is to see your videos pop up in our subscriptions! xx
You are welcome
Many thank yous for sharing your hearty library, poems, pipes, pints, and personality with the world. From the hills of north Georgia, it's a pleasure and a blessing sitting by your fireside. You feed the souls of men, kind Sir. God bless and keep you and yours.
Evening and cheers from America
A pipe owned by Malcom would be very sought after ❤
I'm so glad I found this channel. In these crazy times we live in, this channel reminds me of the simple pleasures we should all enjoy. Cheers, Malcolm.
I love this mans style. Etiquette 10, Charisma 10, style 💯💯💯💯💯 maxed style
Just got my first Peterson in today and then noticed the video after I was done. Perfect timing!
Keep waiting for a kid to run in and borrow this dudes copy of never ending story
Amo profundamente la obra de Tolkien. Todo cuanto tenga que ver con la vieja Inglaterra. Me encanta su biblioteca.
Abrazo desde el sur de España.
Another one of your great videos, Malcolm. God bless you.
got into pipe smoking largely due in part to tolkien, a few years ago now. purchased a long stemmed churchwarden pipe with a second shorter mouthpiece and have thoroughly fallen in love with it- the smell of the burning tobacco, the leisure of enjoying a nice pipe with a tall beer in the evenings. lovely channel here.
I love your videos Malcolm and I love the little plugs about Dublin, my home city. I too love books and really take comfort in these wonderful videos :) Sláinte
Thank you for the reading. Going through a bad time at the moment and you're videos are a comfort for me.thank you. Peter
Thank you for the wonderful video Malcolm. It was nice to watch as I smoked my after work pipe on the patio. A wonderfully sweet Virginia tobacco this afternoon. Cheers
What I would give for a full reading of any of the Lord of the ring books from you! So relaxing and the best auritor
I so agree with this. I would love for him to do a chapter and then really go into it and break it down.
I suspect that only England would produce such a volume as that, wonderful.
A lovely video as always. The simple pleasures of a pipe are now known to few, but those that do savour every bowl. Best wishes.
Thank you for the lovely reading Malcolm, it's been a joy finding this channel.
I almost regret not smoking myself, it sounds very tempting
I wasn't aware that Benny Hill had twin brother, sincere condolences mate ,cheers from the other side of the pond, Michigan. p.s. great stream keep up the works.
Thanks for the release!
Malcom, I ask that you never leave us.
Spring greetings from Tennessee! I just finished Don Quixote. 😢I’ll miss him and Sancho.
Just started Three Men in a Boat. Enjoying it immensely. I want to take a walk down by the lake and and just sit and enjoy my pipe. Have a good day. Have a blessed Holy Week.
This is the pipiest channel I've ever seen. The dude wants to be a Hobbit SOOO BAD. I love it.
Great pipe and beautifully read passage!
This channel is so good! CZcams recommended this channel to me and I'm so glad it did. I absolutely love Tolkien, and pipe smoking too. Thanks Malcolm for doing these great videos!
I watch and thoroughly enjoy ...and smoke my imaginary pipe... 😊
One of my favorite passages in the trilogy, thank you! Being inspired by your videos to give poetry another go, I went to the library and borrowed books of Donne and Keats. I'm still struggling with Keats, but Donne is making some sense. Nearby on the shelf was Tolkien's The Fall of Arthur. This I really enjoyed! It is unfinished, so it abruptly ends just as it gets going (like Steinbeck). But unlike Steinbeck, who had dug himself into a hole, Tolkien was warmed up and in full gear. I would love to hear you read this poem, or other Old English alliterative meter.
I found you by beautiful serendipity, looking for a book, and there you were with it in your hand, a lovely and loving look at a gift you'd been given. Now I'm hooked and you're a gift to us all. Wonderful video, a centre of sanity in a most conflicted world. Thank you Malcolm.
Yes, good morning! That stem and band are lovely. I will keep my eyes out for that book. I see that it is on various tobacco websites
Thank you, Malcolm, for bringing us these wonderfully illuminating and calming video essays. I’m stuck in a hotel room longing for a pipeful of good tobacco. Two days and I can sit down with JRR and a good smoke.
I am once again not sure how I stumbled on your channel, but still pleasantly surprised. Thanks for another great video! Makes me long for the quiet, simpler things in life.
My new favorite channel.
You’d make an amazing English lecturer/teacher
I had just finished the chapter of The Houses of Healing in my Tolkien re-read when this video jumped in my feed. What a delight.
So glad ive found your channel. I sit and smoke my pipe and listen to your talk on books, poems, and what ever else. Its one of my favorite things. And when the talk is on my favorite authors books, even better. Take care sir
Welcome aboard
Books and beers ! Stout and Porter I like them both.
After having watched many videos of yours, I think I can confidently say that this channel is very much a love letter to your parents.
yes, well observed - that's very true
Really enjoy watching you smoke and listening to you read. Thanks for taking the time.
Really enjoyed your video guy. From Western Kentucky
