This scene in the movie is so powerful, the determination she had to not only save her father but also her people knowing very well she may not come back alive. She didn't go to become a hero, she's went because she knew it's the right thing to do.
The synth part makes it probably the most dramatic scene in the whole film, and I cannot believe they cut it out of the soundtrack. Wtf. It's so emotional, contemplative and determined.

Perhaps they'll add it to the Legacy Collection soon. You know how the original Lion King soundtrack didn't have all the score from the movie? Well, when they made the Legacy Collection for the Lion King, they added all the score from the movie including demos.
I remember reading a comment many years back that just stuck with me. I don't know who said it, but it always stuck with me. But when the Mulan's ancestors asked Mushu to awaken the Great Stone Dragon, I think, it did wake up. Not in the physical way we were expecting from the statue, but within Mulan. There were motifs like opening the closet where the armor was at of the closet's handle and I think the hilt of the sword that showed its face. Even when she went to her parent's room, it showed a stained-glass depiction of the dragon. The motifs were apparent. The great stone dragon was, in a way, Mulan. That resolve, that risk of losing it all including her life, I feel was the great stone dragons spirit guiding her to give her the drive to do just that. I'm probably looking too much into this, but that comment I came across years ago really was an interesting and did make me think.
Jerry Goldsmith is fucking awesome. Mulan is definitely one of his most underrated works. Phenomenal work especially this part. He likes to work with synths the best way possible to integrate them into the classic orchestral sound.
Depends on what album you listen to. On the original soundtrack (with the horrible alternate version), it's called "Mulan's Decision." In the Mulan Complete Score, it's called "The Transformation/Mulan Leaves." In the FYC Mulan Expanded Score, it's called "Short Hair." :)
I think they’re good in different ways. I relate to Rapunzel and Anna for their naïveté, Mulan for her devotion to family and identity struggle, Ariel and Moana for their desire for adventure and freedom, Elsa for her isolation and loneliness, etc. Each princess touches on a different part of our personalities. The existence of one princess doesn’t diminish the existence of another, in fact they can even compliment each other.
