I was leaning towards joining SIU but the money seems like it is better at MSC. The union guy at the job fair said i would only make about $6,300 a month as a OS but after watching this video it looks like MSC is the way to go. 90-100k a year is a life changing amount of money for me right now.

Straight pay $770 for 72 hours means that is $10.69 an hour. You're Making $100k at $10.69 an hour... sure, overtime 1.5x and holiday pay... but still, in the end that's $10.69 base pay an hour.
That being said in my early 20s I made over $100k a year pulling in $14 an hour.... so, I get it. 12 hour days 7 days a week can be the way to go if the job is fun... but in the end you're still working the hours.
The thing that makes it worth it imho is the savings on room, board and food.

@@MikeMills1 that's what I ended up doing. I'm in phase 3 of the UA program now. The job isn't too bad but the UA program is a disorganized cluster fuck lol. It takes way too long to complete and there's so many hoops to jump through. I plan to stick with it though and at least finish the program.

Thanks for the videos and insight on becoming a merchant mariner. I got my red book last week and I'm taking BST at Mid-Atlantic Maritime Academy next month. In one of your comments, you mentioned one should go through SIU and their program. But I'm 50 years old and I'm ready to get out on the water. I signed up for the MSC Job Fair, on the 27th of this month in Norfolk. I'm thinking I can sign up with MSC for a few years and then switch over to SIU. Do you think this would be a good move for someone who's coming in with no sea time but does have experience in cleaning (I owned and operated a janitorial business)? I'm also a helluva cook. I'm trying to get that Chief Steward position... 😆. Let me know what you think. And again, thanks for the videos.

Haha they do suck , especially when we see our roads are horrible , so many homeless people and so so many people stuck in a cycle of drug and alcohol addiction. In a way you're correct, we can't do anything about it per se , but we also shouldn't accept it and allow it to be normalized . Know what I mean?
Like our gas prices now, just bc you and I can afford them, many of not most can't and imho we need to speak up if not for ourselves, for the generations of less fortunate coming behind us struggling to raise their families. Sure , some are boneheads lol and didn't make the right decisions or create opportunities for themselves like you and I did . Things are way more expensive now than when we were teenagers. I'm Gen X and it makes me sad to see young families struggling, being charged $18K for a shitbox vehicle that is the opposite of reliable.
Sorry, my intention wasn't to clutter up your cool post /video with political crap. But at same time , if we don't discuss these things , it will get worse .
Anyways, cool video bro, subscribing and looking forward to seeing you succeed. Ya got me wishing instead of becoming a State Registered Journyman Carpenter, I got into merchant mariners biz! So cool and exciting.

But in order to do that we need enough people willing to sacrifice it all and these days nobody willing to sacrifice anything for the greater good.
