OMG, the horrible animation of the early Barbie movies is so nostalgic honestly. Looking forward to the live action one. Super excited.
It's not horrible because this is what cartoon quality CGI for TV and direct-to-video was like at the time. Besides, the studio behind this movie had previously made the first two fully computer-animated TV shows ever, ReBoot and Transformers: Beast Wars.

I will say the reason the Queen didn't "recognise her daughter" was because of her poor eyesight.
It's why there was a scene there showing Julian sneakily stealing her glasses

this movie was an absolute featured film for my household, my sister and i "assigned" princesses to each other. (I was blue, she was pink lol) We even learned some of the dance for "i am a girl like you"! This movie is literally so iconic: the dresses, the music, the villain... just Preminger alone dude lmao.

The whole reason for the plot was the kingdoms bankruptcy. The kingdom is in danger of collapse and families are losing their homes. In order to protect and help them, Annalise agreed to her mothers request to marry a rich king.
So when that daughter's believed to be dead, and her advisor whom she's trusted for years says he's found an unbelievable amount of wealth that will help her people... of course she's gonna say yes.
Even if she hates the idea of marrying him.
All playing into Premiger's plan of sabotaging the Kingdom's wealth until the royalty get desperate enough to save their people.

As the one of the freak guys who grew up with Barbies (I'm kidding. I'm not ashamed to be a guy who likes Barbies) I grew up with these movies! My personal favorite is Barbie as Rapunzel. The score is BEAUTIFUL, it's got a great evil witch villain AND she's voiced by Anjelica Huston, it's got a great story and it's just so visually stunning. I'm also really excited for the live action Barbie! PLEASE let it live up to the hype! Then again I love Margot Robbie so much that I'll watch anything she's in good or bad.

I had an Anneliese barbie that sang "I'm Just Like You" when you pushed a button on her back. She still sings the last time I checked, going strong for over 15 years
There was an Erika doll that paired with her. My little sisters each owned one of the pair. If you pressed the buttons at the same time, they sang the song in harmony. I was secretly jealous.
I like how it's Erica that starts "You're just like me" and Annalise hasitates and only joins in later.
The real ones know that Preminger is QUEEN👏👏💅
I sometimes feel like the only person who knows that Preminger is voiced by comedian Martin Short. This is one of my top five favorite voice acting roles he's done.
Also, I really think you should check out Barbie as Rapunzel. That's always been my favorite Barbie movie as a kid, plus Anjelica Hudson is Gothel in that film.
He really put his all into this performance, it wouldn’t be the same without him 😂

Princess and the pauper holds an extra special place in my heart because my abuelita from El Salvador gifted me a copy of the movie when it first came out, so for the longest time I knew the lyrics to all the songs in Spanish
Also Princess and the Pauper, Swan Lake, Barbie as Rapunzel, Fairytopia: mermaidia, and diamond castle were my absolute favorite Barbie movies while growing up
The song "Here I am" is such a bop. It always finds a way to pop back into my head.
This reminded me that I had told myself at one point I need to try to watch the animated Barbie films. Because as a kid, I rejected everything barbie related out of fear of being too "girly". I wanted to be a hardcore "tomboy" who does nothing girly. (I am non-binary with a masculine preference turns out, who'd a thonk, not child me) So this meant that anything feminine I stayed far away from so that I could just be "one of the guys". But now I'm an adult, that recognizes those opinions were and are bs, and I can do whatever the hell I want.

You've read The Goose Girl, I love that book! The descriptions and imagery in it are so well done and the characters are so vibrant. Though it's true the coups, animal decapitation, and straight murder are probably too much for Barbie.

Shannon hale is such a good writer. All of her books had me in a chokehold as a child. Definitely one of the more underrated writers who deserves more recognition and attention, especially on the book side of TikTok.

Preminger makes this movie so much fun and the songs are a bop. Add the trivia regarding Julian’s voice actor, and I couldn’t ask for more from a Barbie movie.
The melody of "I am a Girl like You" was ingrained in my brain for the longest time now... hearing it in this movie has just reactivated a core-memory of mine... o_O
Inspired from The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain, this is regarded as one of the best Barbie movies.

Being a guy and a teenager when Mattel put out these direct to video Barbie movies to compete with Disney's direct to video sequels. I never watched this. One of my bodybuilding friends on Instagram loved these when she was little and said Barbie was a huge influence in her life and big reason she became a bodybuilder.

Now I may be a little biased, but I absolutely ADORE Princess Charm School. The songs are bangers, the characters are great... AND THE STORY REVOLVED AROUND A MURDER! Like 🤨🤨 It's amazing... HIGHLY recommend...
This was my favorite as a kid to the point where I still have the vhs. It's funny as an adult to see how tone deaf it is when it comes to the difference between a princess and a pauper. But thats not gonna stop me from loving the songs and the ridiculous lines. Especially the fake bloopers

I think the reason so many of us love this movie is because it's not completely 'woe is me, my life sucks, I'm running away to follow my d r e a m' and annalise was straight up prepared to marry a stranger to save her people. And that it's people genuinely falling in love, like she's known science boy forever, and Erica didn't jump straight in with her man either. One of the few movies (inc barbie) where it's not love at first sight and married in the next week (like thumbelina holy lord lol).
I've also applied the 'to be a princess song' to myself, because damn I shouldn't show what I feel inside because it's often 'is this person dumb'

Sure, except that’s not what the song was about.
Everyone seems to either misunderstand what the song is really about or they just choose to ignore it. It's not about their lives being similar in how they live or what they do. It's about the fact that neither of them has any freedom to do what they wish to in life. They are both forced into something they don't want and have no control over. That is why the PAUPER initially starts the song because she realizes that even though one of them is a princess neither of them has any freedom in their lives.
I LOVED all the Barbie movies, my favorite was always Barbie and The Magic Pegasus, the amount of times i cried looking at the poster till dad bought it for me😭 it was the most magical thing i had ever seen. so much nostalgia🤧💖

The way that I screamed when Sophia brought up the Goose Girl by Shannon hale. That book (the whole Series) had me in a chokehold my entire childhood. I still to this day as a 22 year old recommend that book to people. Shannon hale is one of my favorite authors, even though she is considered a children’s author. A Completely underrated writer who needs to be shown more love.

Barbie in the Twelve dancing princesses, barbie as rapunzel, and barbie as the island princess are my top three i think, though i definitely also love the fairytopia movies, the princess and the pauper, swan lake, barbie mariposa, barbie and the diamond castle, and just, like, so many more. Was truly obsessed with many of these movies growing up and many remain to be comfort movies to me now as an adult.
I think that barbie's princess charm school is a masterpiece for it's time, and is definitely my favorite!

I love Barbie! My household owns all these films on disc and my mom, who is well into her 40's will sit us down to watch them again. The songs are bops and have quite literally landed me roles in musicals! These films are great!

i wasnt super into barbie growing up (always preferred winx, monster high and other franchises like that) but i did have this movie on a cd and i watched it all the time. almost weekly i think. i remember during the songs i would pretend to be singing and mimic what the characters were doing. so nostalgic

I never watched this movie in English before but I heard that Julian's VA voiced L in Death Note and watching this now, I imagine L every time Julian is talking ^^ Like, he even talks in a similar way than L here xD (since they're both nerdy characters who often explain stuff but soo different apart from that)
