Great to see someone packing a robust tent and not sheltering beneath what looks more like a large pitched tissue paper.
You will appreciate that during wind and rain conditions, and be drier.
My thoughts exactly. It was beginning to look like CZcams hikers camped with fairy cloud quilts under a tissue tent with kit so lightweight it fitted in their pocket. Fair play to them but Hurrah for the robust hiker ❤
@@DartmoorPaul - True...I look back at Hiker's photos from the 1990's and before and the Women were commonly and successfully Backpacking larger pack loads than many of the Men want to pack today.

Wonderful, Really comes across in the video the warmth of human friendship in a non-judgmental environment. It’s refreshing and uplifting, but also kind of sad, that the hiking community is one those rare places where you can say what you feel, be who you are and no one judges. It’s something I know that I would benefit from and hence my goal to hike the PCT in 2026. Your videos are inspiring me to do it.

So glad I found your channel. I'm going to hike the AT one day. Maybe when I retire. You're doing great. Keep it up.
It's been 2 years since my thru hike was cut short by an injury in Vermont and I haven't been able to stop thinking about the trail and all the wonderful people I met along the way. I get emotional when I look back and think can I, should I give it another try. Everyone I talk to other than thru hikers will say why would you want to put yourself through that again. They could not understand why I made the first attempt and find it even more difficult to understand why at 70 I would ever think about a second attempt. Sure it was difficult and uncomfortable at times but then something amazing would happen and you wouldn't want to be anyplace else.

Yes there’s a lot of hikers attempting the trail this year. I was number #1491 to begin the trail 🙏
@DerekCullen You're in "the bubble". Most folks start the trail this time, so there's a lot of people. There are some folks who started January who are nearly half-way done now though, and it's not nearly so many people.
I follow a lot of different channels, the perspectives are always different, even though I see the same trail all the time 😊

Thanks for sharing. I notice you have a little gas stove, so gather you are not cold soaking on this trip. Is this because of the social aspect of siting around cooking together?

At 5:16 into the video...great observation and absolutely agree. In most cases, when you put the peoples together...from different cities, states, or countries...they largely get along. It is Governments that divide people and this is by design. A divided people, kept busy and distracted by government created narratives...pitted against each other arguing over race, gender, sexual preference, religious beliefs, etc are much easier to rule over. They don't want the People coming together, educated in critical independent thinking. A "dumbed-down", divided society bickering over nonsense is less likely to pay attention to the ruling class, discovering the chicanery they are commonly engaged in and holding them accountable.
I thoroughly enjoy your videos, commentary and unique perspective. You are indeed an Irish Philosopher. You remind me of a favorite quote by one of your countrymen, George Bernard Shaw. "Life isn't about finding yourself, it's about creating yourself". I am looking forward to seeing how you create yourself on this journey. Perhaps Shaw would be a fitting trail name....

Hi Derek, I was wondering if you started the trail with a warmer sleeping bag (like 0 deg F) or would that be overkill? I was thinking the warmest bag to start and mailing ahead lighter gear for later warmer temps is what people must do. Im loving the insights youre sharing on the people. All the best to you. It's crazy how much this looks like my own back yard in New Hampshire. We're technically part of the same range. Re: the Appalachian... the story is that if you hear your name being called out in the woods or see something like an animal that looks like it wants you to follow it, do nottttt go into the woods. Stick to the trail! 😅👻👾👽

I’m curious what do you do if you find someone’s item left behind do u leave it or drop off at a shelter like someone’s walking sticks .
If you meet ten people on trail, how many tell you they're part Irish? (My guess is eight out of ten) :)
8-10 miles? Maybe for the first couple of weeks if you're in poor shape. Most people average 15-20 miles a day. If you only do 10 per day you will need some luck to not be snowed out of finishing.
I have a question, why don't hikers wear a proper hat. All I see mostly is baseball style hats?
Quick Derek! Think of a good trailname before you become something corny Irish. The people you meet on the AT are amazing and yes politics and religion are unofficially out of bounds as topics of conversation. Happy trails.
