  • I hated recording this, if there was anyway around it I would have taken it.
But in the interests of helping people learn from my koi keeping issues I have chosen to share it and be open about everything I possibly can be.
At times this koi keeping hobby really challenges us and if we can share insights rather than hide them I believe we could all learn from others.
So in this episode I have dropsy in my koi. I offer my understanding of what dropsy is in koi, what causes dropsy and what I did to try and help my koi.
Unfortunately a dark episode about my koi keeping journey so far.
Feel free to buy me a gin from my wish list below 😉

I found your video today because i have noticed the dreaded pine needles on one of my koi and being a relative novice was looking for an answer.I have had the fish for 3 years ,but when i look back i think there has been some tell tale signs.Like you i am saddened losing a fish ,i am not a fanatic, but enjoy a fish[koi]pond.Perhaps i should have gone to my local dealer for what would have seemed to be an insignificant question. You have made me realise how important or not an insignificant question could lead to.Sorry for your loss of a lovely fish and best wishes in the future.

Dropsy is a symptom of a condition. Its usually a kidney or liver problem from bacterial or other things. Adding salt helps with osmoregulation and helps relieve the kidney from working so hard. So you saw some improvement. But it does not take care of the original problem. Quarantine would have done nothing so dont feel bad. Kois natural salt level is .9 and people well push salt to that level to try and help the kidneys. But it really doesnt work without diagnosing the real problem. The redness is probably a sign of koi going septic inside. And now it is showing outside. I wished you would have opened the koi up. You probably would have been surprised as too why this fish was still alive. As it was probably a real mess inside. As mentioned. You have to catch it in the real early stages with antibiotics. And then cross your fingers.

On the qt pond, you don't need a pond, a vat, aquarium or anything that can hold water will do the same job in situations like this. Only if you are heat ramping would you need a dedicated pond/vat. Any of the above mentioned would would for new fish as well as poorly ones. Plus, a aquarium heater can be used with little running costs due to the lesser amounts of water. Other than that a filter is a must, pressure ones work fine for this situation and fill the gap. Again, each to their own and we all have different ways of keeping. We all find what works for us and more importantly, our koi. Keep learning like we all are and you never stop learning new things. Temps this year have put all our unheated pond in stress.

I just had this problem with my larger Ochiba koi where his scales lifted and it’s fins were clamped and sitting at the bottom and after hovering head down tail up and what I did was put kusuri anti bac spray with orahesive powder and then put acriflavin in the pond then gave it salt bath 0.6% the next day and it started swimming again the next day. Right now the area looks rotten and the flesh hanging but is hand feeding and swimming normally

you and family come first....always. I think we have all lost fish/had issues...and its easy to say..but we just have to power through..hopefully. A quarantine pond would be great..if we all had the space and the money. I've tried salt baths from time to time and they do work..maybe not on everything...

Hi Johnny, well done for sharing your experience mate, and not a nice one to go through.
But as said by others, any experienced Koi keeper will have gone through this too, and once dropsy has set in, it’s usually hard to come back from.😢
You are being way too hard on yourself as usual… 🤷🏼‍♂️
As for having a Quarantine Tank. I technically have one. It’s just 500 gallons.
But that sadly IS my current actual pond (puddle) for now…. 😂🤣
Lookin forward to the ‘happier’ videos you mention that are coming…… 😁👏🏼👍🏼

Dropsy, can be reversed, but only in the very very early stages, the truth is, us nomal people, koi owners can only do so much, unfortunately Dropsy does take 99% of fish and after they contract it, well... its game over, sorry to see this but onwards and upwards pal.
