You're expecting too much from Pink Smalling. I think you expect too much from special cards in general. For the most part, they are only suppose to be a minor upgrade, especially when Smalling only goes from 84 to 87, you're just not gonna notice a difference. A player like Lahm, who goes from 88 to 95 and his stats get a MASSIVE upgrade, that's where you notice the difference. +3 just isn't enough to really see a difference.

78 rated son has 86 pace which is decent but it ain't the best. but it is still broken. his finishing is just a joke.
Steven I had his 78 gold and he had 40 games 60 goals all in fut champs I would sub him in as a st and his 89 purple has like 100 games 60 goals he's still a key part in my team tho his finishing and positioning is better on his normal card for me but his speed is noticeable in his purple.
78 son was good back in the day but now every one has tots defender he gets bullied easy.

Do this aa9, play a couple of games in division 1 without knowing which butland your using, after the matches guess witch butland was used, if you guess most of then right then your right about being the normal butland is better than the 86 butland

On Futbin the games to goal ratio typically increases with upgraded players, (statistically if's score more than the non-if's) this suggests that at least in an attacking sense increased card stats do make a diff..Sure their are lots of other factors we aren't taking into account but it definitely suggests that the bigger the increase the more goals. Personally TOTS Mane, keita, Tolisso and Lacazette have all been much better for me than their non IF's, I think sometimes with If's and legends you overthink and expect them to perform and obsess over every mistake whereas the players you like you don't concentrate on as much.. just a thought
PS SBC buffon was awful for me but I also hated his regular card and he has the trait 'cautious with crosses' also GK's are kinda random even when they're good

The Butland card probably looks worse for you because it's the summer time and the only players that are playing FIFA are the hardcore People. So they are most likely better at shooting and attacking. They score the same amount going against De Gea or Neuer

The reason why Smallings 87 card feels worse than his regular 84 is because you know the playstyle better with the 84 card! Like so AA9 will see.

I recently came back to FIFA last week so I decided to play the weekend league again for the first time i about 6 months. I qualified easily and went into my first game. Every player I came up against has incredible teams and I have roughly a 50k all gold Bpl team (plus purple sterling). I took a few losses but got into a really good run of form. I was on 14 wins with around 12 games to go, my aim was gold 2. I made it all the way up to 20 wins with a few losses along the way, so my record at this point was 20-18. I go into my last 2 games, first game I dominated but conceded a speed up lag goal on the 90th minute and he won 4-3. I thought it wasn't a big deal, I just had to make sure to win the next one. My next opponent has an incredible team and I'm intimadated. I go a couple goals up but he slowly crawls them back. 3-3 on the 90th minute. Smalling gets the ball and for some reason refuses to pass the ball although I'm spamming the A button. His potm son steals the ball and slots it away on the 90th minute, denying me gold 2. Definitely one of the hardest losses I've ever took, I was depressed for the rest of the day. Reminded why I stopped playing Fifa

Also I didn't bother to do the butand sbc because I figured it would be worse then his 82 normal card and also I thought butland was really shit this weekend so I switched to courtouis and I also scored a bunch of lucky goals this weekend because of butland
The upgraded smalling is incredible in my opinion, he's always in the best position to get the ball
