- In this video, I attempt to explain why I think considering shapes is a vital component to creating good compositions.
Kienan Lafferty ( / kienanlafferty ) and Sinix ( / sinixdesign ) also have videos talking about shapes that are definitely worth checking out.

I've been obsessed about the importance of simple shapes in making great drawings. The anatomy grind has proven to be impossible to get over. Now I want to use more symbology/iconography to make interesting images and characters. I hope it works out.
Yes, I too am also appealed by shoes
Don’t mind me just taking notes
+ Psychology is the primary element to appeal
- Variety of different things makes things interesting therefore more appealing
- Frame is always your first shape to work with
- Contrast between the spaces is what creates variety within the frame
- Good foundation but bad house is always better than good house with bad foundation
- Using extremes is also good way of making it more organic/interesting
O O O . O O (noticed the dot?)
- Don’t be afraid to be general, block in what you want, frame and angle view
- Look around! Even a pill has some things going on in terms of design
- Fundamentals rule!
sycra: "it might be a shithole house-"
sycra: *barely supresses laughing at own joke*
Young artists should really concentrate on composition first. Detail is nice but furnishings won't make up the bricks of a house. Shapes and their placement are the first things to concentrate on. Get them down on thumbnail drawings first, tie them down and then worry about details later. Great video Sycra. Love your work.
This answered questions i didnt knew i had, thank you.
THIS HELPED ME SO MUCH MY SKETCHES ARE SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING TO ME NOW AND I WANT TO DRAW MORE!
GOOGLEisILLUMINATI WE CAN HEAR YOU NO NEED TO SHOUT!OK?
Those were some nice shoes.
I haven't seen one of your videos for sooo long and maan it feels good
Missed your tutorial videos dude, always glad to see more!
Like, really, lately I watched and rewatched a lot of your videos, especially when you just sketching poses and faces with any kind of thought flow on the background. You said that you consider yourself more like analytical kind rather than intuitive when it comes to drawing, but somehow just about 10 minutes me watching you drawing makes me feel a lot freer with drawing human figure. Your character style is awesome, your lightness with drawing sketches is so great it’s make me feel like I’m starting draw better just after looking for a while how good you handle all this stuff. Please keep doing things you do!
Years ago I started watching your videos and you taught me how to draw. I've been drawing everyday for almost 5 years now. Thank you!
i dont even do art but i like to just zap through your videos because you explain so poignantly that its easy to grasp at, and it gives me a better appreciation for the art that i do see
:0 didn’t expect to see your comment here
@@MewMiyuu i've had this account for 12 years before it became a channel so it happens
This has been the video that I have needed throughout my artistic career, no art teacher has been able to provide this knowledge, I thank you good sir!
Thank you. I found the section between the 19 and 27 minute marks the most useful.
hey Sycra, haven't been to your channel in a while but this is where I started my art journey man almost 10 years ago. Thanks lol, lightning bolt technique.
Sycra you sound so enthusiastic! I'm happy for ya!
I got the part where you said, "now zoom in and look at the head. What design could I use here". So you have a shape within the larger foundational shape. You showing me this is a great building block to know, thanks, man
Sycra I love you. I've watched you for years. You are my favorite art CZcamsr and I really hold u close to my heart man.
I know people always say this but...THIS IS JUST WHAT I NEEDED RIGHT NOW!!
man, those were some nice b- shOES! i love shoes.
Dammit, i always want to watch the whole video, but somewhere in the middle i just want to start drawing...
Ohhhhh, this is exactly what I needed. Thanks Sycra, for saving me again!
man i missed these tutorials
Oh my god it's just like the old days
I've been trying to wrap my head around designing compositions with shape, and sycra pulls through once again with just the kind of explanation I needed. 🙆♀️🙇♀️ thank you!!!
2:18 you had me fooled
HE'S ALIVE
This is super helpful. Artistically speaking, I'm at a point where I do nothing but study and rarely compose, but this information will be super valuable when I make that transition in the near future
Thank you for making a video that helps us explore the world of shape design.
that was so eye opening! i never thought about this type of thing before, at least not consciously
Super helpful design tips, thank you!
Have you ever considered teaching? I love your style of teaching!
Welcome back Sycra!
Thanks so much for this!!! I really hope it's not too long till you return to this format with these informative videos where you teach. You have keen talent for art education and I hope to see these sort of videos make a return to your channel! Kudos!
watching you're videos and streams got me into drawing and i'm super thankful. Great content as always!
Dude, It's about time! Welcome back. The way you spoke in the last live stream I saw, you sounded clinically depressed. I really thought, at worst, you might be quitting art and at best you might be done making CZcams videos. All I could think was why are the really talented people always the most tortured. I hope to see more of your great paintings in the future.
Cant wait for the character design vid using shapes!
This is the best video by Sycra... ever.
14:21 "thumbs up" doesn't look that way to me...
FU
Thank you for making this video. This is super helpful!🤗I love your channel so much. I feel like I enjoy drawing more and more because of you, thank you Sycra! 💞
Indeed a very helpful video 📸
Hey glad you're back!
you give me confidence man
Hey! I recently began drawing because of your iterative drawing video. I haven't really tried since I was 13. I'm doing the draw a cube website
Do u still draw?
5:18 “kinda looks like Chinese money... it’s got a square in it”
Thank you sycra very specific.
This was really helpfull, thanks!
Holy sycra where have you been
Thank you, this is so helpful
Thanks for this channel man, your videos are so helpful and inspiring.
Very humbling.
This is so interesting!!!! Can you talk about negative space? That was interesting too.
YOUR BACK THANK GOD *hugs* YUS
Whats's up with these "Welcome back, Sycra!" comments? He didn't upload that few videos. ...
thanks for getting me thinking
I like your hand writing
very interesting content...thanks 4 sharing!!!!
My topic of the month awkwardly
Great video, made me realise something that.. I really needed to know earlier lol
I was inspired to try and consciously work on my composition after watching this and automatically saw improvement in my art. I have to admit it hurts my brain to think about it rather than just go in there on a canvas and start drawing, but thinking abought composition really helps- thank you!
You mention Kienan having a similar video, do you happen to have a link to it? Can't seem to find it :C
SO GREAT! Thanks a lot!
He vanishes and appears again every month, that's been his routine for a while now, post more often dam it
Finally you are back
I have a question. I've been having problems conveying weight in my characters. They look weightless, and dont seem to fit in with the environments I draw them in. The perspective of the person is always a little bit off to the background, and they end up floating somehow. Or I'd draw them to be very heavy/husky, but my lines make them so that they aren't perceivably heavy. How can I fix this?
I would suggest rendering you're characters, shading them will add mass...also posing your characters (weight distribution of characters) can help as well
Draw the background first, then fit them in it. This makes it easier to make them fit into it effectively. Using perspective to gauge their height would probably help with sizing. Also, stuff like shadows on them or made by them would make them look like they’re actually there.
thank you :)
dont leave us again dad
Great info man! Also, I would love to see you take that potato chips character a bit further
9:09 Question: when you draw with "clear" background (let's say for like sticker or iron-on-patch designs, where what is behind it can vary wildly from the original square shape of a canvas) where there is no inherent border, should you still consider the backer/canvas shape as the first shape, or do you just ignore it entirely?
Would it work with the comic panels as well?
Krish Phoenix I would say definitely! Each panel is its own frame and composition, and together they create a composition for the whole page. Using shape design can really help you sell the story.
So do you recommend using this method to get better composition for making comics? I mean as in seeing each panel on the page as the frame then forming shapes in the panel to get more interesting scenes?
Watched.
Thanks!
Arrr yes, I do play with my rectangles time to time.
Good thing there's x2 playback.
9:10 Mind blown
Link to Kienan Lafferty compozition video?
Anyone know how i get the same crosshair as sycra? I want that cross shape!
idk why but in this video, your voice sounds a lot like Max Landis XD
One of the good methods I guess.
i thought sycra was deceased
Those shoes....😂😂😂😂
Keinan Lafferty and...?? Missed the second name 😕
My pa

So, is this thing about shapes mandatory or just something that makes your drawings more interesting?
Nire nothing in art is mandatory. If this feels like something you can use, go for it, if not, toss it in the bin :)
I think I'll give it a try, I have been drawing since I'm a kid and I've improved a lot since last year but I suppose I still have a lot more to learn.
I currently want to get into digital painting, tried to do one yesterday and damn it's harder than I expected
These "shoes" are appealing to me
ASMArt
Well yeah a pair of butto...shoes is surely appealing
I CAN'T DRAW HAIR!!!!!!!!!!
First-
Those “shoes” though..
