Dara Shukoh: An Emperor Who ‘Fused His Spiritual Explorations With Political Ambitions’ | The Wire

  • In this video interview for The Wire, author, historian and translator Rana Safvi speaks to Supriya Gandhi on her book - 'The Emperor Who Never Was: 'Dara Shukoh in Mughal India'. Gandhi says that the reason she wrote this book was to understand how Dara Shukoh, as a Mughal prince never let his spiritual explorations detract him from his political ambitions. She says that one of the main themes her book delves upon is the becoming of Dara Shukoh into a philosopher-king. She also explains to Rana Safvi that she wrote the book in a narrative style so that it could reach a much wider audience and not just academics.

In 1633 ,Dara Shukoh was appointed as the heir apparent of his father. He was Shahjahan's favourite children. He was a liberal minded ,unorthodox person who didn't believe in radical islamic ideology. He was a very profound scholar and he wrote vast amount of literature. He studied Quran as well.He translated many hindu religious and spiritual text from Sanskrit to Persian. He was very fond of Indian culture. This fact does not go well down the throat to these pseudo secular western historians. They all the time try to mallign him through their books and literature. He was the rightful successor of Mughal dynasty but he was murdered by his younger brother Aurangzeb in persuit of the throne .Aurangzeb was a very cruel,Orthodox person. He killed his own elder brother who was the heir apparent of his father.

Have you read the book? Dara Shukah was not capable to rule the country. Let us not put forth our personal agendas? Aurangazeb, whether we like or know, is the greatest emperor of all the time. Of course, he was not perfect. He has broken Islamic Law to protect his throne. He had more hindu staffs than anybody else.

What kind of crap is this?He ordered demolition of several Hindu temples. He ordered the assassination of the ninth Sikh Guru, Tegh Bahadur, for his symphapthy to Kashmiri Brahmins. He reintroduced Jezya(a tax levied on Non muslims).Aurangzeb’s treatment of his father and brothers is also depicted as a testimony of his cruelty. He imprisoned his own father in Agra after usurping throne from him.He banned music throughout the empire. He murdered all his brothers. He is also alleged to have sent his captive father the decapitated head of his eldest brother, Dara Shukoh,Shah Jahan favourite Son.

What? Aurangzeb's failure to deal with the administrative and economic crises, his 30-year long Deccan campaigns that worsened the crisis, his religious policies and intervention in affairs where he didn't need to that alienated a lot of important nobles and led to rebellions, his his constant paranoia that made his suspect everyone around him and prevented his sons from ever gaining proper political and military experience along with other factors contributed to the demise of the empire.

Prince Dara Shukoh, the eldest son of Emperor Shah Jahan, was like his great ancestor Akbar, a very liberal and enlightened Musalman and a true seeker of truth. Akbar respected all religions - Islam, Hinduism, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Jainism, Sikhism, etc., and gave their votaries complete religious freedom. He was ever keen to discuss and understand their religious beliefs, practices and philosophy and, in order to make the Musalmans familiar with the culture, and universal values, philosophy and traditions of India, he had the great epics of India - Ramayana and Mahabharat - translated into Persian. He also arranged for the translation of the Atharva-veda.
Continuing the unfinished work of Emperor Akbar, Prince Dara Shukoh too, assisted by the Indian scholars, got translated Bhagvad Gita, Prabodha Chandrodaya (a philosophical drama written in 1065 A.D.), and Yoga Vasistha into Persian. He also translated fifty two Upanishads, which are the fountain-head of Indian philosophy, with the help of learned Pandits from Banaras, well versed in the Vedas and the Upanishads. The translation of the Upanishads by him entitled Sirr-i-Akbar (The Grand Secret) was completed on the 28th June 1657, shortly before the commencement of the War of Succession, which he lost to his crafty and unscrupulous brother, Aurangzeb who ruled India from 1659-1707.
