I bought a FWB 124 Sport in 1982 new from Beeman's who imported them to the states (they called them a model 50 but all the German stamps are still on the gun including the "124 Sport") with a Beeman 4x Scope. I have a bit of a time understanding why people of today often seem to remark on how expensive they were at the time. I bought mine because it was far cheaper than the center fire rifles of the time and I wanted to practice in my basement with the Beeman pellets. I could shoot all day long for the price of a couple of rounds of centerfire. As I recall I spent under two hundred dollars for the rifle and scope. For less than ten bucks I also bought about three thousand rounds of the .177 Beaman pellets. I still have them today and just finished a seal replacement. I found all the parts still well in specification and the action tight as could be. One thing I have heard remarked about the modern version is that they are not well lubed leading to problems but I can attest to the fact that my FWB 124 was very well lubed with a product that kept all its properties through the years (this was the first time I have broken it down completely). The only thing that was a weak point was for them to have used plastic on the piston seal and plastic breaks down over time. I just bought a new HW50 to compare the old and the new. I would have a hard time choosing between them if the FWB didn't have sentimental value to me. One factor was the FWB did not have a 'kick pad' on it (something I may rectify at this late date) which allowed it to fall when leaned against a wall resting on a slick floor as well as the wood chipped off the edges if dropped or mishandled.

Enjoy your springer reviews. My first spring piston gun purchase in 1979 was a neat little carbine that has accounted for countless squirrels, a BSF 55 in .177. Keep up the good vids, they are enjoyable and informative. Scott in the USA

Good video, good to see the model 50 as l bought one few weeks ago, it was rusty, I've reblued it, it was underpowered that was down to it having old, hard grease in it, the piston seal was fine, l reblued with moly, new spring l had in, it shoots good now, 11.8ft/lb, the thing with the bbs in the trigger, put them in the black tube using grease so they can't fall out, put the outer tube in first, that compresses the main spring, hold it in using one pin partly in, then put the inner piece in that has the bbs in, pressing that in lining up the pin holes tap both pins in, done, it isn't that hard, the main thing I'd say is having the 3 bbs held in the holes with grease.

Trip down memory lane for me had all three of those and each had its merits. I was quite upset as a young man when the tap wore out on the model 50 and it was pushed to one side to seal. So I purchased the mark 3 basically for the build quality but the balance was awful and did not shoot that well. Next the F Sport was the gun that I shot more than any gun I have ever owned it was deadly accurate and the first .177 I owned. I did purchase a HW35 later in the game and it was a good gun solid but a little bit of a lump compared to the F Sport.

Robert Beeman used to advertise the FWB Sport as having an 18lbs cocking effort, not sure if the Americans got a stiffer spring or not. The long spring suggested a low spring rate with high preload, something Jim Tyler says is good for reducing hold sensitivity, which may be why they did well in the early days of field target.

I had my MK3 from new in 1972 and here's what I think of it:- The quality in places was not brilliant and after only a week a piece of plastic wood filler jumped out of the stock, just where it rubs up against the sear block. Shooting the MK3 was rather a disappointment, with a kick like a mule that actually used to leave bruises on my shoulder. Accuracy my have been ok but due to the kick I can honestly say that I could rarely hit even a crow from about 15 to 20 yards, whereas I used to find easy to hit vermin with my previous two break barrel air rifles. It was most disappointing that the sight had no windage adjustment, short of hammering the sight to left or right. The sharp corners on the breech loading tap, cocking lever and trigger were always an annoyment, as was the single stage trigger action. Lastly, the rear spot weld on the scope mount plate came unstuck after about a year, which is still like this to this day (not an easy repair). So overall, most unimpressed, and the only reason I still have it is, it was a present from my mother.

Hi Carl, I suspected as much. The engraving on the super target didn’t seem deep enough and there was some wear on the sight that didn’t quite match the gun. The standard mk3 bluing was perfect, so good job, but it seemed too good for the year no mater how well stored. The stock was also oiled and all the originals I’ve seen were varnished. But still a lovely rifle. Does not a restoration job destroy the value to collectors?

That is not a FWB Sport Mk 2 , it's a Mk3 . The FWB Sport Mk1 had a metal trigger , the Mk2 had a plastic trigger but had internal upgrades and was factory tuned. The Mk3 was fitted with the stupid barrel muzzle brake 'thing' which wasted the look of gun , (in my view) . Owned a Mk2 for 40yrs ,and it's still going strong .

    • @LloydSchober
      @LloydSchober Před 3 lety

No , its a Mk2. Mk1'as had plastic triggers, Mk2's have metal, and it wasn't factory tuned. The muzzle you see on the gun in the video is a rubber protector to cover the foresight rails , its not the Mk3 metal muzzle weight .

    • @divermalky

I am looking at an Airgun World magazine , March 1981 , on page 38 is an advert for the FWB MK2 , it states - - ' All the benefits of special tuning are now standard on the Mark 2'. I have owned my MK 2 for over 40yrs and I can assure you it has a plastic trigger . I think we can agree however, that the FWB Sport was a great air rifle .

The Original mod 50 was not more powerful than the Webley mk3. The Webley mk3 was a direct copy of the Mayer and Grammelspacher mod 45 (yes, the Mod 45 was an underlever) and the only difference was in the loading tap which was on the right on the Webley and a Webley mk3 stock will fit a mod 45 but the mod 45 stock won't fit a Webley mk3. The Original mod 50 would struggle to achieve 8 ft lbs as they were advertised with a muzzle velocity of 490 fps in .22 and 690 fps in .177. The Webley mk3 could achieve 10 ft lbs in .22 (5.6mm) with Webley Special pellets. Given a choice I'd take the Webley mk. But only a pre 5 series.

I was doing a bit of ratting on a farm not a million miles from Blackpool a few years back and the farmer had an airsporter lent in the corner of one of the sheds . It was an early one , don’t know how old but way older than the one I had as a kid in the 80’s and if I remember right it didn’t have scope rails so I’m guessing it was possibly from the 50’s . As you would expect from being left in a shed it wasn’t a minter but he still knocked the odd rat over with it

The Original 50 is _not_ a powerful rifle! You would be lucky to get 8ftlb out of it (in 0.22). It looks as if it should be powerful, but there it is diisappointing. The other two (even the Webley) should give a higher muzzle velocity. I think the Webley produced about 9 ftlb, or just over, from new.

All we owe the British air rifle industry is the moronic 12ftlbs rule .They brought that in to be able to compete with the Germain rifles as the Germans were selling rifles with 20ftlbs and the British made ones actually struggled to get near 10

It was mainly the US imports such as Crosmans and Benjamins that worried the UK industry to the point of pushing for the power restriction.

Matthew Pearsall : look above Matt and you can see that the rifles were restored. I didn’t get Bobs prices but the restoration wouldn’t be cheap, so I would expect them to cost more. They are back at city air weapons now, so maybe call and buy them!

Not impressed with the HFT guy and his comp!
I emailed HFT masters after watching your video to ask where all the locations are around the country so I could see where my closest one was to attend. I got no reply at all, so I guess it's a super elitist comp where 'ordianary' people aren't allowed to know where they shoot?? All the shoot locations on thier website are location abbreviations!

Sorry to hear you haven't been able to attend your local meeting Rob. Roger has been travelling a lot recently so maybe he's just not got to your message yet . He also is the opposite of Super Elitist . I'll message him about your enquiry :)
