  • Farm Aid is excited to bring attention to a new report by the Center for Agriculture and Food Systems at Vermont Law and Graduate School, which finds that farmers who had been denied federal loans by the Farm Service Agency (FSA) won only 17% of cases in the USDA’s National Appeals Division (NAD). Published in partnership with the Rural Advancement Foundation International (RAFI) and Farm Aid, the results of the report found that similarly situated farmers often had very different outcomes in the loan approval process.

Farm Aid’s mission is to build a vibrant, family farm-centered system of agriculture in America. Farm Aid artists and board members Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews and Margo Price host an annual festival to raise funds to support Farm Aid’s work with family farmers and to inspire people to choose family farm food. For more than 35 years, Farm Aid, with the support of the artists who contribute their performances each year, has raised more than $70 million to support programs that help farmers thrive, expand the reach of the Good Food Movement, take action to change the dominant system of industrial agriculture and promote food from family farms.

Can we just stop the nonsense and give farmers what they need? Do we want to eat?

This is so unfortunate. I agree that rules and regs need to be reformed. We need desperately to innovate and evolve. Also, the support systems designed to keep our system going and help folks should not be used or abused in a way that disrupts legitimate aid requests. This sounds like a case where old rules and rags plus bureaucracy are getting in the way of the purpose of the intended rules or laws
