    I've owned a VX-170 for about a decade. It's a fine radio. The size is just right! Not a huge brick, not a tiny tot!
    Battery life is excellent! I'm still running on the original one.
    In the car, connected to any decent "Mag-mount" and a 12 volt dc supply, I can use it like any mobile. But, like all HT's, it will get a mite HOT when running a full 5-watts for any length of time.
    But here, where I live one or two watts, with any good (outside) antenna is all I need.

  • @PreparedTexan
    @PreparedTexan  Před 13 lety +2

    @valhala56 yes, it is aimed at one person in particular who requested it.

  • @purplemutantas
    @purplemutantas Před 11 lety +1

    For a handheld I am really pleased with my yaesu FT-250R. It's water resistant and shock resistant. Along with a AA battery holder and tax, the radio ran me $160 from the ham radio outlet. The MFJ whip antenna I got for it was $20. Not a bad deal for a sturdy radio I can take out in the rain.

  • @PreparedTexan
    @PreparedTexan  Před 12 lety +3

    The correct term for "touch-tones" is Dual-tone multi-frequency signaling, or DTMF for short.

  • @PreparedTexan
    @PreparedTexan  Před 13 lety +3

    @valhala56 This isn't for web browsing. It's for audio communications over long distances. It's a radio, not an iPad.

    I am looking for some way to trigger an alarm when I want to talk to the base from mobile. I can then alert my wife to answer the radio. Maybe some kind of DTMF monitor?

      @wisteela Před 4 lety +3

      I like the idea of this. Should be possible via an Arduino or Raspberry Pi.
      And ignore the idiot who replied regarding a phone.

    • @nc818
      @nc818 Před 2 lety +1

      @@wisteela basically what you would want would be a pager. Unication makes pagers that the fire service uses that can receive vhf, uhf, 700/800mhz and LTE. They can alert on DTMF signals sent from any analog radio, as well as The MDC 1200 signals sent from Motorola radios and pager tones

  • @PreparedTexan
    @PreparedTexan  Před 12 lety +1

    If by that you mean talking from ham radio to another ham radio, then yes. They operate on the 2meter band. They cannot be used as FRS radios though.

  • @purplemutantas
    @purplemutantas Před 11 lety +1

    I have been thinking of the same thing. My thought is to see if I can make an arduino DTMF decoder. I am sure I can find examples of that. Then you just plug the arduino into the mic port and speaker port. Or just use an HT where you only have one port to worry about. Set up the radio to use a PL tone to trip the squelch so someone else doesn't accidentally trigger your system.

  • @purplemutantas
    @purplemutantas Před 12 lety +1

    +1 for using the NATO alphabet. I am planning on getting my ham license. I have listened to some hams on my scanner. It really annoys me when people don't use the NATO alphabet for their call sign. It makes it harder to understand. The NATO alphabet isn't that hard. I have had it memorized for a few years now. People should be required to use the NATO alphabet for their call sign.

      Military phonetic, not necessarily NATO as most other countries don't have to speak English all the time
