    I was just researching the Beneteau swift trawler line. They made a swift trawler 50 and now they make a swift trawler 48 . The difference in interior space between both boats is amazing .The 50 is so much bigger. Now I noticed that the newer swift 48 has regular shaft drives again where the older 50's only come with pod drives. That of course makes you wonder why Beneteau the largest boat builder in the world after all goes back from pods to shafts. Maybe someone who reads this knows more about that ?

    If you run in shallow water pods are an accident waiting to happen. Volvo pods are much better than Zeus pods but Volvo parts are very expensive and somewhat limited. I agree that the economy and maneuverability make up for the service costs however the likelihood of hazards are a huge issue and not worth the trade off. Give me shafts, props and thrusters any day. Just my opinion.

      No different than any other system. The same thing happens to any drive system. That's operator error 100%

      @kirkwilliams4942 if I bang my props, it's a $500 problem. If I bang my pods, it's tens of thousands. Not the same at all

    New re-designed Volvo Penta IPS PODS no longer require hauling the boat for oil change. This, combined with increased fuel efficiency, makes them less costly than traditional shaft drives.

    Thanks for the podcast on pods man! Up until I saw your manifesto just now I was a straight shaft guy with a big ass keel to protect the prop. Your doing exactly what your supposed to be doing. Keep it up.

    Can Pods combine the input of a bow thruster into the joystick control? Don’t think so. Don’t let them tell you that you don’t need a bow thruster with pods. You will when the breeze gets up.

    Zeus pods goes into great detail on what happens when their unit strikes an obstacle. Volvo Penta IPS videos are silent on that topic. Can you explain what happens if an IPS hits a log?

    Spoken by someone who
    1) has never lost the use of their boat for a season because of a bad microchip that was unavailable
    2) hasn’t had to deal with the dramatic increase in maintenance costs - recurring revenue stream for the yards and manufacturers who maintain them
    3) assumes they’re as reliable as other more traditional drive systems - they’re not
    4) is apparently unaware of the massive issues associated with a particular manufacturer of pods

    If a pod breaks, can you repair it DIY? Nope...

    • @ladykay8
      @ladykay8 Před 3 lety

      like all types of engines/motors/drives, that depends on what breaks... and how good you are at DIY. The software?.. that's going to be tough, but it's probably a download & reset away. Prop comes off? installing new props is not that hard. rudder issues? There is probably a manual steering option. "engine issues", well, they're inboard, so as long as you have access, it shouldn't be that bad. The same can be said for cars.

    You obviously have no direct long term experience. POD seal replacement $9k - $14k per pod. To replace to and bottom seal you have to remove the entire pod actuator since top and bottom seals must be replaced. If water got into the actuator then you are talking 35k and up to replace or rebuild. Plus when any of these events occur which do frequently it can take 2 months to fix. Imagine if the boat is 100s of miles from home. None if these isses with shafts and thrusters with joystick option as well.

  • @michubyk

    I don't have a boat, but been on few and they always tell current depth. How do people run aground with sensors telling you approximate depth of water to damage the pods ?
