Mate, please make your kid ride with clipless shoes. It's less about power delivery, and more about stopping leg suck. That could happen very easily on a pothole, and might permanently damage a leg/knee/foot.
What CyclingMikey said - you *must* *must* *must* have clipless pedal on these things. If your foot slips off the pedal, touches the road and gets sucked under the bike.. I don't even wan to think about the damage that will do. Sadly like a lot of good cycling advice it gets drowned out by the noise of the 'helmet wars'.
If people wear them correctly, they still don't work. Well, at least not for serious head injuries. They probably work OK at preventing some level of cuts and scrapes. If you want real cycling safety, go and look at how the Netherlands does it. Helmets aren't involved.
FUN FACT 1: recumbent trycicles are alot easier to pedal allowing you to quickly gain & maintain speeds. FUN FACT 2: he was going DOWN HILL afterall. ;)
Actually no. I don't believe any cycle helmets are certified for collisions with motor vehicles. In fact most come with disclaimers saying they aren't suitable.
This bike is similar to my sons Tadpole Trike I rode long distance with. They are a cool bike to ride. Not sure what a new one costs or where to purchase one. My sons was handmade by a friend.
...in other words a flimsy bit of foam. Expecting that to protect you in any way from a vehicular collision is like having a firm and sincere belief in Magic. If you want cycling safety, look to the Netherlands. Real safety comes from altering driver behaviour.
@fencingderek I guess you meant to write "Rich kids and their toys." Recumbents generally aren't that expensive -- no more than you'd pay for a desktop computer, or a flat-screen TV, things that lots of ordinary families own.
Eh? So buying your kid something that improves their fitness is 'a waste of cash'? Is it better to spend 2000 on a big screen TV and let them vegetate in front of it? This attitude is exactly why 1/3rd of the US population is obese.
if you attualy read what i have said, all i have said is that they prevent some level of injury. and before you correct me on my spelling, check your grammar
you say that but wearing a helmet gives you that little extra protection, they may not save you completely from injury, but it could literally mean the difference between brain damage or certain death, trust me I'm a mountain bike instructor, sticking on a helmet is such a small thing to do but it could make all the difference
+valveman12 He should get a BMX bike helmet. A road bike or mountain bike helmet is too bumpy in the back for the head support, yes he should be wearing one
i said; 'protects you' i never said 'will save you at all costs. ps amongst other things i am a comedian, i'm sorry if i offended you, sometimes i forget that sarcasm does not work over the internet
You said helmets usually protect you against vehicles ("dumbass driving into you"), but they don't. Helmets come with disclaimers about not being suitable for such collisions. Helmets might do fine for the minor cuts and scrapes that are common to mountain biking. Serious head injury on or off road, no chance. Oh, and I stopped picking on your English once you said you were dyslexic. It was in response to the poor show claiming I'm brain damaged for not believing in helmets.
@shammadamma yah right the cheapist one of I have seen was 2000 so yah if you have 2000 to wast on that toy then you have sum cash I will never wast my cash on that
@fencingderek you probably "wast" your cash many things...it's just that you give yourself "permission". I guarantee you've "wast" 2,000 dollars in the last 10 years on downright bad stuff ,liquor, cigs, junk food, etc but damn... don't wast it on a good bike !! that would be stupid !
i can see that for what ever reason i can not convince you on this matter, maybe your already brain damaged? but there not made of foam (poly means plastic), please get your facts strait, I'm just talking from experience,
Nicely done video! Love the angles and editing. Looks like he is having a blast on that catrike!
Very nice video, showing the trike. Still the best ;)
With all the innovations done to recumbents the one thing that always gets looked over and passed by is that long-assed floppy chain~!

1} I love this CATRIKE
2} why didnt he have a helmut?
3} would you get really dirty as they have no mudguards?
How fast can you go on one of these?
This bike is similar to my sons Tadpole Trike I rode long distance with. They are a cool bike to ride. Not sure what a new one costs or where to purchase one. My sons was handmade by a friend.
wow 56km/h impressive, but i think parents should have him wear helmet.
Nope, it's madness to put your faith in a Magic Foam Hat (tm).

Are his legs not a little too straight? Looks like the boom needs to be shortened a bit.

I wonder what the maximum speed can be developed in such a velomobile? Интересно, какую максимальную скорость можно развить , на таком веломобиле ?
YES CATRIKE YES
Eh? So buying your kid something that improves their fitness is 'a waste of cash'? Is it better to spend 2000 on a big screen TV and let them vegetate in front of it? This attitude is exactly why 1/3rd of the US population is obese.
cause at 1:45 if he didnt duck down........
the kid is over extending his legs big time...that would make for an unpleasent ride.
if you attualy read what i have said, all i have said is that they prevent some level of injury. and before you correct me on my spelling, check your grammar
Pretty sweet trike, but far too much slack in the chain. Some idlers and a lower link count would help.

Under 18 and no helmet. Hmmm
+valveman12 He should get a BMX bike helmet. A road bike or mountain bike helmet is too bumpy in the back for the head support, yes he should be wearing one
Why did he go so fast.
helmet? what for?
down hill I did 47.6 mph very stable

@fencingderek yeah... don't want to "wast" "sum" cash what ever you do ! cheapest not cheapist.
also, what's wrong with going fast? these thing s are built for fun
guess im one to talk i never wear a helmut.
i said; 'protects you' i never said 'will save you at all costs.
ps amongst other things i am a comedian, i'm sorry if i offended you, sometimes i forget that sarcasm does not work over the internet
How the fuck would you fall off one of these?
1st sory for being dyslexic, 2nd, if people wore them correctly they would atualy work
