The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

What a fantastic performance. I got this track on the album: Belafonte At The Greek Theatre. Pure excellence, this song as well as anything Harry Belafonte does. He was the best of the best. Thank you Harry for making this world a better place. God Bless You

From the New York Times 6 days before this performance:
Harry Belafonte, who has been turning down guest appearances, will be on television for the first time in a year next Sunday on “The Ed Sullivan Show.”
Mr. Belafonte said that he enjoyed working on “The Ed Sullivan Show” because of its high record for using Negro singers and actors. “Ed doesn’t worry about the Birchers or the South,” he said.
The versatile performer who made folk singing a million‐dollar business said yesterday that he had refused to be “a hook for dancers and jugglers” on variety shows.
“Ed Sullivan is giving me a block of time to put my art before viewers,” he explained. “I won’t be on for two five‐minute acts. I’ll have about 22 minutes.” He will be backed by 12 singers and 5 musicians and will sing 5 numbers.

And the stupid copyright laws kept all this stuff hidden away for decades. No wonder young people don't know anybody and how great they were.

That and getting clearances from the artists or their estates. Big headache.

well, whoever inherited the Sullivan properties had a lot of work to do organizing the hundreds of TV shows...

The archive went to Ed's daughter Elizabeth and her husband Bob Precht who was the show's producer. They sold it in the early 90s to Andrew Solt whose company, SOFA, still owns it. Elizabeth died in 2014 at 83. Precht passed just last December at 93. @@oldbeatpete

Harry's music are Caribbean folk songs. Big difference. Methinks your issue isn't the genre. Prejudiced much?
