  • Is it rude to describe someone as 'fat' and 'plain' in the opening lines of an obituary?
'The Australian' Newspaper published an obituary of acclaimed author Colleen McCullough with the opening "plain of feature, and certainly overweight, nevertheless a woman of wit and warmth."
The hashtag #MyOzObituary quickly appeared with people sharing their "warts n all" mocking eulogies. Many asked if a obituary to a male writer would ever list their physical features before their achievements in life.
Author Neil Gaiman and Associate Professor Chris Gunter sent their #MyOzObituary to us.

If you ever read her books you'd know she was a genius of the highest order, and a great artist and map maker.

She was a genius, and she actually demands that of her readers, as well. Truly the greatest author, in my opinion. The Rome series is my absolute favourite.

Colleen McCullough was an absolute one off and truly inspirational person who emulated her sharp sarcasm and intelligent satire with very nice effects.😊👌 The Wordsmith from Australia never offended because her rare gsoh just choked people to hysterics and this was so clever, unique but lovely to see.👏 Really miss her still. Her contribution to the industry is vast and will certainly stand the test of time. 🙏😊🙏

I've been told that Colleen wrote THE THORN BIRDS while working at Yale University and renting a place in Guilford, CT., my hometown where I still reside. Those who made fun of her body -- or found it necessary to describe it in such negative terms -- should look in the mirror and not through stones. But then, most people are rude to one degree or another and rude people are worth no more than the value of their organs at wholesale.
