The games against Roma were Juve's toughest challenge in the era. Roma went close to winning the triplete that year, losing the Champions Cup to Liverpool on penalties and the Serie A to Juve by two points, ending with a win in the Coppa Italia only. In the end, without Platini's free kick Roma could have won and closed on equal points with Juventus, and a shoutout match be needed to seal the title.
Juventus had won the Coppa Italia and lost the Champions Cup final to Hamburg the year prior, while Roma won the league, and Juventus would go on winning the Cup Winners Cup and the Supercup that year and the Champions Cup the year after in the infamous Heysel final, followed by the Intercontinental Cup.
These were arguably the two best teams in Europe with Liverpool at the time, with Platini and Falcao being the world's greatest players

Platini was the best from 1983 to 85 Maradona from 86 to 89
Nobody really compares to the magic and skill of Maradona, but Platini was just as effective in his own way.
Maradona was better as a no10 and Platini was better as a pure midfielder, although both were very good in both roles.
