I'm fixing to be 50 and have hunted since i was about twelve. I just finally heard a buck vocalize about 4 weeks ago for the first time in my life. I didn't see them in the brush when i hit the grunt tube, but there were two bucks and a doe about 150 yds away and she definitely had their attention. When i hit the tube in just a few seconds there was huffing and puffing and grunting to my right, i looked for a couple minutes but still couldn't see them. I looked back the other way and it happened again. When turned to the right there was a big bodied 8 point buck standing in the clear lane facing me kinda hunkered down and pissed off that there was another buck grunting. He is now a European mount on my living room wall and a freezer full of meat. It was awesome, as i turned and he was standing there like that, my vision looked like a camera turning on a huntingf show to look at a fantastic deer.
thats an intimidating sound. if I was walking to my stand in the dark and heard this is would lay down and play dead. God damn grizzly deer ain't no joke.
I lived in the mountains and around deer for about 15 yrs at least now and have never heard a buck's growl. I would crap myself if I heard this without seeing it. Sounds like a freaking zombie. lol Although I did hear something like this about 6 yrs ago and never could figure out what it was. It was in Feb at night. I had a shotgun and I heard some growling like this, but for some reason I thought it was a young black bear. Now I think I may have heard a buck, because it also ran away quickly while growling like this. All I know is my heart was pounding.

I just sat for a second and wondered what in the hell was that? I looked behind me really slowly and there is an absolute monster buck 50 yards away. It's something I wish I had video of.
Several years ago I was hunting an area I call Oak Orchard. Eleven miles to the nearest full time residence. That year the Red Oakes dropped the most plentiful crop of acorns I've ever seen. And the deer responded by being there in unusually large numbers. One obviously large buck was doing his best to find one or more open doe. His sign was obvious and I decided try to walk in on him. So about mid-afternoon I picked up a pole and did my three legged deer walking approach to a seat I had weeks before set at the base of a big oak. And sat down and waited. Nothing happened until just before dark and at that point I decided to use my grunt tube. One short grunt and the brush started cracking and he let out a roar that was way louder that the buck in this video. It was like a small explosion in the woods and it actually scared me. I was inclined to get the hell out of there but managed to keep my cool and wait to see what happened next. My little compound bow seemed like a pitiful weapon at that point in time. But that was it. Not another sound,. And finally it was getting so dark I had to get out of there.
Heard it today for the first time in my life while checking a buddy's trail cam in an over grown apple orchard. I thought it was a black bear. As it finally walked away through a thicket I climbed up my friends ladder stand and saw it walk through an overgrown field and he was a big 8-10.
I found this by searching for “ anyone ever heard a buck roar?” One time when I was hammering boards to a tree for a stand back in the 1970’s ( we did that back then before modern stands came on the market) I heard the most intense guttural sound about 50yds behind me in thick tall red brush. A few seconds later I heard it again but it had moved about 30yds to my right and it was loud and very intimidating! It sounded like it was really mad. I could not figure out what it was, and I had never heard such a sound before. After much thought I guessed it must have been some type of deer vocalization, and I knew there was a big dominant buck bedding in that area I was after. I have discussed this with fellow hunters over the years and nobody has heard what I described. All I can guess is my banging against the tree really upset a big buck who may have thought another buck was invading his territory. I’m glad he did not come charging at me from behind with a deadly rack of bone! He must have circled me and caught my scent, because I never laid eyes on him, or heard him sneaking through the thicket. A scary experience for sure, kind of what it must feel like when a bear growls at you from dense cover.
I have deer that live in my woods around my house (pretty suburban mind you), on the side near my room, walked into my bathroom with blinds up and heard this sound just now. About had a heart attack . I am now scared of my bathroom for the night even though the air conditioning turning on definitely scared them / him off!
Once heard one growl prolly 70 yards away I was while my buddy was 30 feet away from it. Said he’d never heard anything like it in his life. Makes the hair on your neck stand up. Monster of a 8 point and clearly the most dominant in the area.
Last night, while primitive camping up on Muddy Mountain near Casper Wyoming my wife and I heard this growling off in the distance. Nice to know what it was. At the time we found it more fascinating than frightening.
I've heard this with 2 brothers, friends,,, me and 1 thought bear,,, local here,,, other was 100% huge, dominant buck! Later confirmed on cam! Was mind blowing !
I was out picking moss for our garden and heard this. thought the neighbor was revving a chainsaw or something, I looked up and saw my head laml flashing back at me from 20' away. 'must be some metal shit'. grunting and stomping continues. took me a few minutes to realize it was a buck. and then I shit my pants
Ive just recently moved away from inner city living and stay on the outskirsts of a fairly large section of forest. Ive seen the deer tracks and knew they came pretty close to the actual house, so I sat outside with a flashlight in the dark and waited. Long story short, about 3 AM I seen an eye shine maybe 5 feet into the brush at the edge of the yard so I started to slowly move closer (mind you I only can see the eye shine not the actual deer) and when I got about 15 feet away it started making this sound, so I quickly retreated back inside. Do only bucks make this sound and do I need to worry about the deer charging me when I have a midnight smoke xD Someone help a city boy out xD
That was awesome! F.F. Hannah Barron(the Real Hannah) can make that sound with just her throat. It's part of a pig sound she makes but could easily made to sound like a buck growl. I just tried it myself and I think I could pull it off. Probably not as loud but good to know if I ever need it. Thanks!

Female hunter here using my husbands account , yesterday was the 4th day I've hunted just started hunting for the first time 4 days ago , yesterday I was in the groundblind alone I had been in the woods for a few hours without seeing or hearing anything so I decided to pack up when I heard my first buck growl, I was absolutely terrified never hearing it before in my life I never seen the buck just heard his growl for about 15 mins ,it was a lot more aggressive than this bucks growl though ,but now I know if I hear it I'm staying
This has been my first year hunting, and I heard this type of growl about two weeks before firearms season. I've been trying quite successfully to replicate it as realistically as possible. Haven't had a chance you use it in a blind sequence yet but I have a feeling when I do I'm gonna see the dominate buck in the area if he is in ear shot
The ominous background music ruined it. The whole soundtrack, including the growl, could have been done in a studio. What was the point of the creepy soundtrack anyway? It did not enhance anything. 🤦🏻♂️ Just let nature impress us.

Yeah, the roar I heard was much louder and more intense than this video example too! Big dominant bucks are very territorial.
