Hutch's car was only a few years old at the time, but it looks like it's over a couple of decades old. It's like they traveled to the future, found an old beat up '73 Ford Galaxie and brought it back in time to the '70s.
That 1973 Ford LTD was just as a butt kicker as the Torino. The Torino was for show an' go,but the Ltd was a REAL undercover cops' car. Beat-up, worn, and just like the rest of the many other cars like it. You really don't have to worry about things like "Watch the paint job!" Btw, I really dig "Earl the Pearl"! In a later episode, Hutch asks Earl to give his car the usual service, not knowing his service is giving the car a make-over, not just changing the oil. The first "pimp my ride" on tv!
Hutch wanted an old banger as his personal car, but instead got a 1973 Ford Galaxie, a year or two old when Starsky & Hutch first began. To make it look the way he wanted it to be he (plus a few other) kicked & dented the sides & scuffed up the paintwork.
Actually, it's a Galaxie 500. I have a 2 door of my own and it's a great car. Which is why it pains me to think of what they had to do in order to get two year old car to look like that. UGGGGHHH, breaks my heart!:-(
Oops, my bad. It's "Merl the Pearl", not "Earl the Pearl". They should've had him more.I think he was in at least four episodes, one with Merl saying to Starsky about his Torino, "You still got that red an' white striped tomato?"
@thunderstruck665 Thanks when i think about the LTD i think about that Detective show "The F.B.I" that was on TV back in the 70's with Efram Zimbalist Jr. all they drove were Ford LTD's...or maybe Galaxies??
@thunderstruck665 WOW i didnt realize that, actually i thought Ford stopped production of the Galaxie in 1972. When did Ford stop production on the Galaxie??
' let me find something to hit you with..' One of the most hilarious scenes with Merle.
Rest In Peace Mr Raymond Allan.
“You dummy! Let me find me somethin’ to hit you with.”
I used that line so many times. I loved Earl.
Rest in peace, Merle
That Earl was so funny...I actually liked that Blueberry On Wheels...LOL...but of course I loved Starsky's Striped Tomato, too.

72 had a different look than a 73 did, theyre miles apart if you study them. They were nice riding cars though,my neighbors had one back then.

THATS A PRETTY. CAR. NOT A BLUE BERRY ON WHEELS
Goes to show Hutch’s taste in cars is more simple compared to Starsky’s.

Ford sponsored all those shows so they got product placement

'74 was the last year.
Hutch actually does have ugly or bad taste when it comes to cars.
Made worse in the film when he had a camper/pickup truck.
@kdemonde: Nope, the LTD had a different grille.
I could never tell what kind of car Hutch drove, I think it could be a chevy but I could be wrong
+Nicholas Skific He drove a 4th Generation '73 Ford Galaxie
