Yes the chords are very hymnal. Interestingly I too am a McCartney fan and I believe they both admire each other. Two of the most melodic writers of the last century. There is a bit of autotune but it is very little and his vocal is amazing overall. I agree Paul's voice is shot. Imagine if McCartney and Joel had composed an album together.
I also love the lyrics to this song and it is definitely a grower. Only bad thing is it makes me feel old. Shades of Always a Woman with the arpegios and so many Billy Joel unique qualities. The video is very moving. The different ages really resonates.

I grew up on long island in New york and actually came from the same town as him when I was a kid. So i've listened to his music my whole life. I think this song lyrically is amazing because it seems to have 2 meanings.Turn the lights back on in a relationship and his creation of new music..🤞 His performance at the grammy's has even more emotion than this studio track.. Definitely one of the greatest song writers in history in my opinion..🤗🎶🎙🎹🎶

Billy Joel does not use auto tuning, but in this recording, the producer did use pitch correction to make his voice sound younger

If Billy is playing in Wales then he is not touring England. 🙂
As for the song itself, I do like it and as with much of Billy's stuff I tend to like it the more often I listen too it, but do think that it is a bit too 'wordy' in a few places and rushed to fit them all in when they do not seem to scan as well.
    Examples being:
It's been a long winter of indifference - The winter's been long and indifferent
Looking for forgiveness - Seeking forgiveness

    • @chattingtracks
      @chattingtracks  Před 5 měsíci +1

I see your point, and it almost becomes a crushed melody in places. And do take a trip to Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 lol :-)

@@nedrini1055 I mentioned in my original post that I:
"......do think that it is a bit too 'wordy' in a few places and rushed to fit them all in when they do not seem to scan as well".
And so was suggesting alternative lyrics but still closely based on the actual ones.
      As in, I was saying:
"The winter's been long and indifferent"
      (nine syllables)
      scans nicer than:
"It's been a long winter of indifference"
      (ten syllables)
      or
      "Seeking forgiveness"
      (five syllables)
      scans nicer than
      "Looking for forgiveness "
      (six syllables)
Which does not trip off the tongue as easily and seems a bit clumsily and rushed to fit all of the syllables of the words in, in order to match the melody.

@@nedrini1055 And you did not think the part that goes:
"It's been a long winter of indifference"
Seems a little odd, even when Billy sings it he sings "a 'win ter' of indifference" as if that is two words, because a faster delivery to sound like one word would seem a bit rushed.
I reminds me a little of the way he sings the word "American" on Allentown:
"They threw an-Am-er-ic-an flag in our face".
I also think the part from Turn the Lights Back On that goes:
"Is there still time for forgiveness".
Seems a bit rushed too and does not scan that well either.

This song strikes me as something closer to Elton John than Billy Joel's past writing. Yes, his voice does sound great, but note that he is singing in a lower register than before. I see that as graciously accepting the changes that life inevitably brings- good on him. And yes, Paul is not accepting that he can't hit the notes anymore because he can still back arenas. I saw a live video of Billy singing this, and it was nowhere near as good. In a studio you get to do takes over and over.

    • @chattingtracks

The voice is all Billy. Look up his intro of song on the Grammys. The "grough" part isnt produced out of his voice as record companies tend to do. At 75 he sounds better live! Saw him in 22 at Notre Dame , in Indiana, can still rock as well. Almost 3 hr show to sold out stadium. American (and world) legend. ❤ PS. He closes Grammys with You May Be Right. Takes his own band. On other note, his young daughters age 10 and under, were at Grammys to see Taylor Swift, not Daddy! 😂
