  • The Springfield Model 1864, also known as the Model 1863 Type II, was America's last martial muzzle-loading arm. Also included is a brief discussion of a mystery I stumbled upon a couple of years ago. While we have reached the end of America's musket production, this is not the end of McNally's Musket Missive and I have more up my sleeve!

The fact that bord soldiers didn't and don't blow themselves up more often amazes me.... Suppose it's not any worse than firing forks and knifes out of cannons.

After the end of the American Civil War the US government found itself with millions of surplus arms it didn't need and, since they were now obsolete, didn't want. So they sold them off at low prices. How many found their way to France I don't know, but there are collectors and enthusiasts everywhere.
