  • DOWN AND ACROSS: This video demonstrates the technique of the “down and across” style of fishing when streamer fishing for trout. Typically, an angler works their way up river when using dries and nymphs, as this is usually the stealthiest approach. 🎣 When streamer fishing, however, working downstream is often the best approach. Although you may be detected sooner, the trade off is that you have the quickest and most immediate access to the prime lies at the head of the pool, and usually deepest areas. Most importantly, when stripping the streamer back upstream it naturally makes a few direction turns as the river current forms a belly into the fly line. You do not get this effect when pulling a streamer downstream while standing at the bottom of the pool. Watch as both of these fish take the streamer as it makes a turn out of the current and “turns” back up river. (now you know why this is often called, catching a fish “on the turn” rather than “on the swing”. Observe in these videos that these fish were (probably)holding on an inside seam in a prime feeding lie, and were triggered by the turn of the streamer upstream. Hopefully this helps you. Comment or DM me if you have any questions or additions.
