Never thought a heat gun could maintain a steady temp like that. And the oven from faced insulation is really smart. Thanks for this video, I learned something from it.
Heck yeah! I used to work for Pratt Whitney and the number 1 tool used were heat guns! They can hold some high temps!
@@dominicandawg3455 do you think this method would work for powdercoating ? Seems like you have experience
@@slowdownx3919 theoretically it should if you make a cabinet that doesn't let the heat escape and use a high quality heat gun and direct the air away as to not mess up the powder layer on the parts. But heat from an air gun is delivered differently than heat from an oven as one uses coils that heat up and a blower to push that heated air out while an oven uses induction coils in an enclosed insulated area to heat up said area and bake the parts. But theoretically yes it should be if you can get the heat gun to hold between 350 and 450 degrees to allow the powder coat to cure on the parts but that would have to be fully tested
@@dominicandawg3455 i will try it and let you know! Thank you for the info alot of people don’t usually respond back.
@@slowdownx3919 no problem dude! Yeah I try to share the knowledge with others it really helps people with projects:) most don't care to share :/
I made my wife one of your ovens so she can cook outside. It works!
I powder coated a swing-arm in our oven and destroyed the Turkey for Thanksgiving
@@Sms68 bet it looked awesome though...
@@yourejustintim
Haha. Yes it does. I don’t even like Turkey !
Did she make a bed for you outside?

It’s not the Bad yet BUT I have been sleeping in the Garage since 2016 !!
For those google ing and unable to find:
The stand is a C-stand, the arm the products hang on is called a Gobo-arm..
I think the difference between someone the DIYs and someone who doesn't is the smile and chuckle at 3:03, invariably things go wrong in projects, how you roll with it keeps it fun and entertaining.
The wind in this video is how my entire life feels
Keep on trucking buddy!
Sorry to hear that
😂😂😂😂😂
For sandblasting the frame and wheels I use a cheap 2 man tent ⛺ and a good respirator. These are generally well sealed. You can tip it up in such a way to reclaim most of your media from the corner of the floor. Also for heating I use an electric hot plate, works just fine
I had never thought of that. That’s a great idea.
@@AaronColton93 Thanks, Aaron. I'm almost done with my first dirtbike rebuild after viewing yours and many other similar guys rebuilds for inspiration.
Can you clarify exactly what you mean by electric hot plate please?
@@__Max-oe6zm electric device for cooking on, has a plate that heats up (may be called something else in the rest of the world)
@@johnharding2912 So it's like a single portable stove thing?
This is awesome. More of this!
This was a fantastic video. The hardest thing for me was the oven. I love this method. Thanks a bunch for the tips!
That oven idea is absolutely genius! You are a beast. I've been loving watching the cr500 videos
Nice video. A helpful way to put the hot box together is using long nails and pushing them into the foam and taping over them.
I really admire how you make the absolute most of the space you’re given for you shop.
Your attention to detail is amazing!
Sweating with the torch...brilliant! Thanks for that tip.
This is excellent! More please!
This guy is totally amazing. His solution for a homemade oven is spectacular ! Doing it in high wind was quite fun !
Wow you just changed everything about my build. New plans and new budget lol this is great content!
Hey , thank you ! Very good idea . That's awsome . I never even thought about making my own oven . Brilliant !! Good video .
I was really hoping you had a video on Cerakote! Glad to see you do!
Make the oven but don't put a door on it. Instead leave the floor unattached and slip the "oven" over your parts and the floor. This allows you to stage all your painted parts in the oven when you have access from 5 sides, reducing the risk of scrubbing any paint as you are putting them in the oven.
Do you put insulated foam under it?
@@eschrader Yes, you make a box out of 6 pieces of foam. The 4 sides and the roof are all connected together. You then take those 5 pieces and slip it over the floor and the parts.
That's genius.
Then you have to build a sturdy hanging rack.
I prefer a opening lid via duct tape hinges, and an extra inside wall that is movable to reduce the size of the box for multiple small items. A 2' x 2' x 4' box can quickly turn into a 2' x 2' x 2' box or smaller.
You came up with some very creative ideas so that you can apply and cure cerakote. Major points for your drive and determination. GREAT JOB.
Where there’s a will there’s a way. Thank you!
Great video!!
two things I saw which is not recommended was. #1 from cerakote is the catalyst should not be used in plastic spray gun cup /Harbour freight does have a 4 oz spray gun with a aluminum cup, I use them. # 2 you need better protection when your blasting you can see in the video the media going every where I would recommend you stepping it up by using the respirator better safe than sorry/ That fine media is very dangerous, many men dies from over exposure to it. protect your self and be sure, respirators are not mad I use a 3M one I think 30.00
I really love these videos with Aaron. Going to get an engine to try this on.
1/2 plywood box, lined with your insulation...four 150w heat lamp blubs hooked to a hot water heater thermostat switch works well and you can control the temp!
Very cool!
Can we all see this video made sir, haha
I was thinking a hot plate with a PID controller would work well too, but that’s also getting a bit more complicated.
ya, that heat gun housing isn't sposed to be exposed to a lot of heat, it's probably ok at only 150 but still....
Thanks for taking the time to show this!
Love this, I just got on today to look at cerakote diy and came across this video
Thank you ! I have some confidence now lol
What a great video!!! I love seeing hands on stuff like this.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Really enjoyed the video! Pretty clever! Thank you for sharing your solutions and associated tips!
I found a 30" wall oven on the street (remodel in my neighborhood) and installed it under one of my benches.. ;)
Talk about a score!
It's called winning! Lol. I'd take it any day I could get it too.
And just like that I’m diving into a new hobby! Thank you!!
I love that you left your battle with the wind in the video.
Such is life! We all struggle the same.
I loved the oven. Great job.
I freakin' love all you vids, Aaron, right on brother, keep 'em coming!
Wow that was an excellent video. Smart dude with great explanations

Love this. Thank you.
Awesome ideas! Thanks!
Great Video. Thanks.
You are welcome.

Dude your oven idea is really awesome.
Awesome. Thanks for posting this.
Glad you enjoyed it
Dude thanks for sharping this is awesome info
No problem! Enjoy your projects ahead!
absolutely awesome thank you
Awesome idea, this guy seems down to earth. I like it!
Fantastic presentation
This is some re-world garage advice. It is great!
Awesome video! 🤙🏻
Very cool.... I would've done a 1x2 exterior frame with strapping, that's just me though. Rebuilding a GXSR in my dining room now (streetfighter)...
Will keep this in mind. Thanks!
Great video!!!
Thanks for the video. What size compressor are you running?
Good info, very creative.
Cool video man and thanks for showing a better option for the oven! One place I worked at many years ago did a lot of powder coating for parts we made for the military, mainly having to do with the illumination of FOB's. The oven there was about big enough to put a vehicle in and about 10 foot in height. Lol. It was awesome but so was the electric bill that went with it I'm sure! I don't know what the isolated cost was to run it at least 5 days a week 24 hrs a day.(3 shifts), because we had a lot of welding machines and fabrication equipment too. I've been wanting to do a lot of parts on my bike as well but couldn't afford to pay someone. This is such a great alternative! Cheers
Genius on the oven idea
Thank you. Problem solving is what we do!
I really like this dudes episode
Bad ass video!!! I'm wanting to do gun stuff. Same same but different. Killer video man. Appreciate it.
Great video! What spray Gun are you using for cerakote?
5:18 Sure Shot definitely deserves a shoutout. They make a killer product.
Thanks for mentioning the name of that!! I need one...
Thanks
You could open a larger shop and have people ship product to you. Most people love to do this stuff but simple do not have the time available. Looks great.
Beautiful.
What strong winds, if only you had garage you could build the oven in. Oh, wait...
Dude! That's genius!!!
Thanks bro🤙🏾
I'm just glad that 99% of what I cerakote is knives and Leatherman so I don't have to build an oven. I just grabbed a digital temp control from AliExpress for $20 and hooked it up to an old standalone oven I found for free on marketplace
Smaller part setup is nice. I used a smaller oven at first until I started doing the larger parts.
Just made me smile
GENIUS
That oven is genius! Should work for powder coating as well
Would cerakote hold up well on rims and hubs? My main concern is the tire irons.
I love that the camera guy let you struggle with the foam lmao!!!
Can you show us the clips of him coating and baking the frame also?
Olfa makes a long blade utility knife that's great for cutting foam board. Best of all, it saves you from creating fine particles of polyurethane dust with your skill saw that you'll end up inhaling for the next year, since the stuff never decomposes and is light enough to become airborne and float around the whole house.
Do you not strain the paint before putting in the gun? Doesn't seem like it does much anyways, but I always do it.
Ca you do a video showing the tools you use in your shop ?
What type of spray gun do you use, with what needle and what psi? Nice job!!
It’s a .08 tip I believe for cerekote
more colton plz
@Aaron Colton If you ever decide to write a book on motorcycle restoration i would buy it
Thanks bro
When are you starting the build of the nc31?
Improvise, adapt, overcome!
Txs bro let's gooo
What did you use on the air box. Mine was pretty scratched. I’m at 400grit wet sanding and have a couple more stages to go but would like to color mine as well
I would guess that by gradually increasing to higher and higher grits while wet sanding, eventually all the scratches would disappear and it would start to smooth out and become shiny. Which is not what you want really but it may be better to polish it to a shine and then sandblast it with 50 or 60 grit so you have a fresh surface.
Well I live in Phoenix Arizona and the summer is coming up. Going to be very easy to keep things outside above 150.....
You might be fine with a black wooden box!
Sick!!
Hi Aaron, what is the reference of your pressure bottle for put brake cleaner ?
It is a Sure Shot Rechargeable Sprayer.
Cool idea on the oven and heat gun. Used kitchen ovens are fairly cheap though, why not use one? Too small for the bike frame?
And what sand blasting cabinet is that?
Could cut out the backside of an oven and add the addition that he made on this video for extra length. Hell, now that I'm thinking about it, you could build an oven like this one and place it on top of the stove to create a secondary oven for doing small or medium parts while using the oven on the bottom for big pieces! Whoooo! Gotta love them sleep deprived million dolla ideas! Lol
Any idea what the highest temp this oven can get to?
Do you take the tape off before the oven?
I like how you showed us the wind issues. That would be so frustrating if that's the only setting you have to make the oven in.
Slick!
what is used to clean the mixed cerakote from the paint gun and burette?
Acetone
Awesome work and detail provided here at always Aaron. I'm very curious though... how hot would you be able to get this homemade oven with the heat gun? I would like to replicate this for at-home powder coating, if this can get up to the needed temp (~350 degrees).
I've done something similar to this with a higher power heat gun, the top temp it reached was around 225 F. Im not sure you'd be able to reach 350.
I powder coat as well, and I bought high temp lights and made an enclosure like this, it gets to 415.. I could link the parts I used if you needed!
@@PhillyFlyersss thanks Cody! If you don’t mind, I’d really be interested to know the parts (heat lamp) you used to build yours
@@PhillyFlyersss I’d be open to getting the links to what you did
Love how you show the truth.
Frustration with outside elements
My video shows how to do it even cheaper.. Quite a bit cheaper. I don't use a sandblaster but your oven is pretty ingenious. Where mine is something most people have. Another thing people can do is air cure cerakote. May advantages to it compared to oven cured. Holds up to UV rays and higher temps.
Cerakote need 150C° to dry or also a lower temperature but to dry it stay a lot of time?
5:54 That’s oddly specific that you “like to mask any holes under 6mm”… But that brings up one of my other questions what sort of heat resistant masking do you use?
Silicone plugs
I hope the music was added because the wind, if so editing was on point
Would the oven be good enough for powdercoating? seems like a great way to do a frame, thanks.
You will need a much more robust oven for Powdercoat.
You need 400 degrees for powder, there are free electric ovens everywhere...
what do you do for the nuts and bolts to refresh them?
Zinc plating at home, easy stuff...
Can you give references to the sand blaster tank etc?
Benchmade bugout nice 👍
but cerakote is saying 500 degrees for the V series oven cure product, are you saying can go lower temps / longer times and get the same result??
