Reminds me of the case written about I think the book was Fatal Vision. Re: the son who tried to kill both of his parents. Succeeded in killing his father but shot his mom in the face and she lived but was blind in one eye.
She got up on the stand and testified in her sons defense. Craziest case and what a dilemma, I have a grown son and I just don’t know….

@@macjrc think I'm familiar with that case. didn't the dad get up on autopilot when his alarm went off and try to complete his morning routine bleeding everywhere with brain damage? and his mom told the first responders the son's name but later didn't want to believe her own son could do that to her so hard she recanted?

@@macjrc that reminds me of the Peter Porco case. Guy killed his dad with an ax and almost killed his mom, she survived. The dad died a HORRIBLE death. Ive never heard of anything like what happened to this poor man. There's a Forensic Files episode about it that has freaked me out since childhood. The EMTs said the mom accused the son when they found her. At trial she testified for him. She supported him, and probably still does. It's S13 Ep 25
As an adult who was sheltered and homeschooled I can attest that I was completely unprepared socially and emotionally to navigate relationships with people in the real world. I was immediately targeted by men who took advantage of my naïveté because I was so emotionally immature, trusting, and had no idea how manipulative people could be. Can’t fathom murdering anyone tho.
As a fellow homeschooler, I both agree and disagree. I think what really helps is how much your parents allow you to socialize, which even some public school people I know struggled with as their parents were against any activities, it was school and home, nothing else that wasn't extremely monitored.
My parents had me in activities, my mom actually wanted me in more because growing up she was never allowed to do anything other than school and home/chores. I did softball, 4-H, FFA and for a small time soccer, girl scouts and church groups for kids my age. But even with that a lot of my socializing was with adults as we traveled a lot and although I was in activities, I didn't have a lot of real friends, it took me a long time to realize the girls I thought were my besties, actually didn't like me and I was a toy to pull out of the cedar chest when it was raining and they couldn't go outside.
I think it's just come and go, on the people in your life and what you're allowed to do.

Manipulators/evil people know how to find a person who is vulnerable due to naïveté or a fragile emotional state. These people should definitely be held accountable.
I completely agree! She is a predator and can sniff out the perfect pray. I believe he was an adult but highly susceptible to suggestions and was easily manipulated. She is a dangerous and evil woman and I pray she does something that keeps her in prison for the rest of her life.
But there is a small part of me that feels a bit sad for him. (Don’t come for me) and also wonders if he hadn’t met her, would he ever have done this?

sounds like a close family member of mine who is engaged to a girl almost a decade younger than him fresh out of anorexia recovery and literally THE most naive person i've ever met.
@@KRL1999 I doubt very much that he ever had a great relationship with his parents, or with any other significant person in his life. I would like to hear from his adopted brothers about what they believed he was like and what was going on in his life.

I would have liked to have heard from the two older sons what it was like being homeschooled and raised on a farm in the middle of nowhere, how they came to leave the farm, and what their younger brother Andrew was like.
Same here. Especially both of them leaving so young. I wonder what their upbringing was really like.
Homeschooled and raised on a farm or village was common before 200 years ago the world as we know it now is totally different totally manufactured

Meh... I find it interesting that all three sons seemed to jump ship pretty fast and got out of the family farm. Makes me wonder what was going on behind the scenes. Does that mean the parents got what they deserved, no! But I don't think anyone is so "pure of heart."

I’m sorry, but I think that it’s unfair to throw shade on the victims because you don’t like their talk of religion. And leaving home early doesn’t mean that you have terrible parents! I left home at 19 because I wanted to be independent & make my own way in the world. I had and still have a great relationship with my parents.
Disagree. Religious nutjobs are good at keeping up appearances and making themselves look good for the community, while at the same time being tyrants at home.
As someone who grew up on a farm far from the nearest town, with no kids around besides siblings, and with religious parents I feel as though this is the teaching moment of how important socialization is if you want your child to be to grow up into a responsible and well-rounded individual.
I know how packed every second of every day is and how there is always something you could be doing or working on when you live on a farm. But my parents always made sure me and my siblings had friends our own age so we could learn to develop along side peers. Whether that was church service, church activities for kids like AWANA (iykyk), meeting our nearest neighbors and driving us so we could have play dates with their kids, or even signing us up for rec sports. It took a lot of driving and sacrifice on their part but I’m so glad that they did it for us.
I feel like if he had more confidence and more experience to be able to say “yes this interaction feels good” and “no this interaction feels scetchy and wrong” he might’ve been able to not be so negatively influenced by her. And I mean by no means do I think he has no responsibility for what he did, he knew what he was doing and he did it so violently. But I think if he hadn’t taken up with her and was able to develop more fully he wouldn’t have become a murderer.
What evidence is there that Andrew was "incredibly sheltered"? It seems to me that they are grasping at reasons.

Being extremely sheltered myself, no cable in the days before internet, there are major knowledge gaps esp in dealing with opposite sex because in religious community that is often highly monitored and frowned upon until a certain age then it’s like now what. I agree with your input. I also think everyone has the capacity for good or evil and he chose evil.

Not all farm kids & home school kids are "incredibly sheltered" to the point of being social idiots. One brother made it successfully to the military another made a successful appropriate marriage. There was something wrong with this kid from the get-go and this creator doesn't know or doesn't want to say it.
Even though legal, a 46 year old woman wanting a 20 year old boy gave me predator vibes. So I definitely wasn't surprised she was charged with inappropriate relations with a minor.
I can't help but wonder if the lawyer who said Andrew was of low intelligence would have been more accurate saying 'immaturity'. I don't know anything about Andrew as a person so I can't say what his intelligence is like, but I would bet anything he has the maturity of a young teen.

At least part of her motivation was to get that farm, I’d bet anything.
I grew up homeschooled, religious, and socially isolated. It’s truly a nightmare. It’s really a breeding ground for abuse and neglect.
I was raised the same and loved it, had the exact opposite experience (minus the isolation part)
It's so chilling to see Scott and Marilyn talking, they seemed so normal, nice, down to earth...that video got me.
I caught myself smiling when they were talking about their farm... then I remembered they were murdered. What a heartbreaking story. 💔

I'm sure they had good intentions and were pleasant people to talk to. They 100% did not deserve what happened to them. At the same time, I definitely side eye parents who feel so strongly about isolating their children from the world. There's a difference between being protective and crippling your children from functioning in society.
They were very good, honest, and generous people - we attended the same church for a short time, right before this happened. I always thought Drew had autism or some other disorder. The kids weren't isolated from other kids, so that was the only thing I could think of that would make him do the horrible things he did.

There is a happy medium. One can homeschool their children, but belong to several groups, and attend church to teach them about God's love, and to instill morals.
We homeschooled our children, because my husband travelled a lot, and this way we could go with him, taking the school books, but also taking time to learn about the area we were staying at. Our children did 4-H, and socialized a lot through the program and the competitions at the fair each year. They learned about animals, and what they need to survive and thrive. They also learned about plants, fish, and food. I made sure my two boys, and the two girls, learned to cook, prepare shopping lists, compare prices, along with knowing how to iron clothes and do laundry. When I got married, my husband did none of that, and could barely boil water. That made me want to be sure they knew it all, in case they needed the knowledge as an adult. When my oldest was going into 9th grade, we decided to put them into the public school that we approved of. All 4 graduated with an above a 3.5 gpa, and won several scholarships to college. We decided to only put $5,000 towards their college each year, so they would appreciate the education, because they had to find a way to pay for it. They never skipped class, because, as my son put it, "I'm paying a lot of money for this class, so why would I skip, for no reason?". We've seen too many college students blow off classes and fail, not ever thinking about the money their parents just blew on those classes! All 4 of our children graduated college with an above 3.75 average. One is an officer in the Air Force, (ROTC paid his way to college); one is an RN with 3 children, one works in CO in the tech field, and makes $$$, and one has a psychology degree, which in hind sight, we should have encouraged a business degree, but she has 3 boys and is working for an interior designer, and has remodelled their 1st house in AL, and is currently remodeling their 2nd home, since they moved to Grand Rapids, MI. She turned two houses, built in the 60s and 70s, into an open concept, doing most of the work on their own, with her designing the two, all by herself.
There is a happy medium, especially the way our schools are turning these days. I believe once they get a moral compass set, high school is a good testing ground, to see what may happen, but only if the school meets your family standards.
This couple tried their best, but may have missed some warning signals, and it took their life. How did their other two sons turn out? It may have been something in the mental makeup, to do this. But violent video games, where you get extra life's, may be turning our children into killers, believing they can get the life back, or being taught that those you kill don't deserve life, and you're helping, by taking their life. It's easy to judge the victims, behind a keyboard!
I will never be able to understand how someone can do this to their parents 😔 RIP Scott and Marilyn

Not thrilled with how quickly Stephanie dismissed what his lawyer said about him being like a 12 year old. Maybe because my son is on the autism spectrum and will most likely be childlike his whole life, I see this differently than "oh, he's just a little socially awkward & would have lots of friends if given a chance".
Standing next to someone for 10 minutes without saying something as she said he did in the beginning seems a pretty clear marker that he should have been evaluated.
@@theConquerersMama don't infantize autistic people. If your adult child has developmental disabilities, Thats separate from their autistic diagnosis. Furthermore, lautistic people are at high risk of something called learned incompetence. which is basically where its reinforced to them since childhood that they aren't capable of understanding xyz or doing xyz, so they depend on others to guide them rather than "do the wrong thing".
That being said, I agree that Andrew sounds like he may have been autistic, as there are several traits, and stereotypes, being translated by others throughout this video.

Their video you showed in the beginning got me. With him explaining how the one sheep thinks Marilyn is it's mother and follows her everywhere and with her talking about how much she loves being back to nature. Heartbreaking when you know what happens to them.... 💔
I wouldn't say a 20 year old is a grown man. They just look like one. Especially one that was sheltered like Andrew. Cindy was definitely a predator and manipulated Andrew with sex. But Andrew swung that pipe and murdered the people who loved him most. So very sad. Thank you, Stephanie! You're the best!❤
Certainly not someone who was that sheltered. There are people my own age (mid-20s) who haven't had enough life experience to be truly self-sufficient.
But you can most definitely differentiate between good and bad. And that's what important in front of the law. I see so many people in my country get away with murder, SA etc. because they aren't tried as adults but are old enough to understand that you should never hurt another human being like that. Sheltered or not, even than you are most of the time teached that you shouldn't be brutal or end someone's life.

My assumption of why he turned on her after he heard that she was blaming him is because he thought that she was going to say she had no idea who could've possibly done it, but definitely not him...or something to that effect. She just threw him under the bus right from the start.
That was one of the saddest things that ever happened there. It hit the entire community really hard, us included, even though we'd only met them once or twice at church.
As a parent this is the most upsetting story, to think you love your child so much and are trying to help them but they have been brainwashed by a monster. I couldn't imagine their thoughts when they realize their own baby is murdering them.
He drove 20 miles on his scooter to kill his parents. That is a lot of thinking time.

Have very mixed feelings about this, because it's clear that Andrew was groomed by this woman. He was young, naive, and very sheltered and she took advantage of him, isolating him, creating an air if secrecy around their relationship, very clearly controlling him. But the sear brutality, the savagery of the attack... Idk, at certain point does it really matter that he was groomed by this woman? Because there seemed to be something deeper there

What happened to his folks is very sad. I think we need to have a conversation on sheltering kids. When they grow into adulthood, some jump into situations they are not equipped for. They don't feel comfortable talking to their family. They are easily manipulated and latch on to the first thing that crosses them. Killing is wrong. Obviously, something is missing for him to think that was okay to do regardless of his upbringing.
As someone very sheltered & raised in religion (and no, I’m not excusing his actions) I believe that Andrew grew to an adult age, discovered some freedom, met a bad person at a very influential time…. And while all of this was happening he lost faith in his religion, lifestyle, and parents. I think this is part of what drove him to being so influenced by something such as a fortune teller making claims.
Exactly. I went to school with a girl from a religious sect & they were so sheltered & naive I often wondered how she'd cope in the real world. Tho she insisted she'd go to Uni, come 16 the girls would usually leave education & be full time on the commune & farm they had. Then it was a baby every year & that's it, that's their life.
I agree. I was very sheltered - after 1st grade I was homeschooled and hardly allowed to leave the house unless church related- even then barely. My younger siblings never had a chance to see public school or make friends, and it’s heavily hindered their social ques and views on reality not having peers or close friends, or just being out in society. I get wanting to bubble up your kids to keep them safe from the dangers of the world, but it can really do them such a disservice when they do get out there with such a naive mindset.. no excuse for murder of course, but I can see how it’s possible he became a prime pawn for Cindy. So heartbreaking for the family..

I almost feel like Cindy Lou was the true monster in this story. Andrew clearly fucked up and really made a terrible decision, but she is truly an evil manipulator.

I think it depends. Just telling someone to do something usually won’t make someone kill another person. But if you manipulate somebody, cut them off from their family, make them dependent on you, and then help clean up the evidence, yeah I think you’re guilty

No, Stephanie, having such a sheltered life is awful; such a detriment and a handicap for a developing child and adolescent! The job of a parent is to prepare their children to live in the real world, and Scott and Marylyn literally crippled their sons by being overprotective. It's no wonder that Andrew turned out the way he did, although that's no excuse for murdering his parents. I was raised in a "sheltered" christian household, and my brothers and I did *not* fare well *at all.*

Sooo much yes to this!!! I was incredibly sheltered. I have an FBI agent for a father and we could do nothing. The second I had any type of freedom I went crazy. Not to mention I was not ready for any type of real world adversity or ppl who were not of the best of intentions.
I don't think she says it's a great thing. She said it is a dream of hers lol. The parents seemed happy however raising your kids in that environment can be horrible. But they did raise 2 of the children successfully which makes me think there could be some mental issues they ignored.
Look at the Duggar family. I bet there is way more going on than just Josh Duggar's sex crimes.
People definitely need to be held more accountable! We can sometimes sympathize with the killer because of a traumatic upbringing or experiences, but, still hold them accountable. With this case I have zero empathy for Andrew. Cindy and Andrew are both terrible people that just happened to meet and do horrible things.
Absolutely your opinion. Many people are too quick to excuse and sympathize with the perpetrators. Two lives are gone forever. The parents didn't deserve that. 😖
I grew up as a farmer, poultry mainly. We've had a few goats and rabbits at one time. It's not an easy life, but very rewarding. One thing that bugged me was in the clip featuring them was that they mentioned not vaccinating their animals. Whether they are free range or not, it is an absolute MUST to vaccinate all of them. You never know what might happen. Nowadays it's mostly a no brainer with Avian flu and the many diseases bovids carry like Cache Valley. But if anyone wants to ever be in that life, please know it is not sunshine and rainbows all the time. I miss that life, but it is not just for anyone to drop everything and start because they want to. You have to be prepared for the good and the bad with the animals, the environment and your own mental and physical health. I wish things had gone better for all of them. Poor Andrew, he was duped by this horrible woman after being sheltered his whole life. But damn, I will say his parents tried. I may not have agreed with their methods of running the farm or raising their kids. But they did what they thought was best by their animals and their kids. Don't get me wrong, Andrew should have been more consistent with his actions. Regardless, Cindy Lou Beck was manipulative and didn't seem to take responsibility for anything and depended on others to make her way through life. I'm glad that she's at least behind bars.

Thank you Stephanie for not making it sound like these kids being homeschooled and living on this farm was some sort of reason for this to happen. I was homeschooled as a child. Both of my kids are homeschooled. One of my kiddos is autistic and social situations would be hard for him whether he was "socialized" or not. My daughter is incredibly friendly and outgoing and has a very easy time making friends. Just because these kids were homeschooled and live on a farm, does not mean this caused Andrew to do what he did. At all.
don't shelter your kids. you're not doing them any favors.
My son functions on a teenage level due to autism (which it sounds like Andrew is autistic as well) and the general public wouldn't know unless I told them. If a lawyer interacted with him he'd probably see it. However, I doubt his parents would let the farm to him in their will if he was that dysfunctional.

Now, to first say I think he is as guilty as the day is long. However, I live in ND. I just want to give a little bit of understanding to the whole "simple life". Kids need to have exposure in their lives to different cultures, a future of possibilities of your own making, and street sense. I lived in a very small town of 1,600 people when I was in high school. I came from Seattle. I see both sides, but I personally think those communities are places to raise children, but for them to spread their wings and leave the nest before settling down. Having such singularly isolating of an existence can very much stunt developmental growth.
I am originally from Oregon and am an adoptive/foster mom and remember when this happened. This was before social media was so big and before googling everything. I did not know all these details. Thank you for this

I was working at a summer school in Dallas Oregon at the time of the murders in 2010. I’ll never forget driving past their home and all of the media vehicles and tape along their driveway. I didn’t know the family personally but this feels very close to home. I can’t imagine what his parents were thinking in the moments before they passed. Thank you for covering it.
Spiritual manipulation in a vulnerable young person is super susceptible in my experience… but it’s totally possible he had a lot of anger too. Either way an incredibly tragic case 😞

Obviously not for their boys. One couldn't get away fast enough, enlisting in the armed forces. The other getting married and moving far away. Andrew may have felt trapped being the last kid left.
I don't agree with what he did to his parents but there is more to this story.
This breaks my heart 😔They seemed like such lovely people and getting to meet them in the beginning of the video as they discussed the farm and to see how proud they were of the farm & their family, it really pulls at your heart strings 💔 Cindy is pure evil and I wholeheartedly believe Andrew fell under her spell & became completely brainwashed, because I would like to think he would never have hurt his parents otherwise.
As an ex teacher I'd caution parents against isolating their children socially. His very sheltered upbringing made him the perfect victim for Cindy Lou. There was a similar murder in an ultra religious family by the son. The family had been in a documentary & the mother was so extreme it bordered on abuse. Her children had no life , their whole existence was rigidly controlled & dictated by her Yes a child can be fed, clothed & be in a pleasant home, but that can mask things missing: like learning vital life skills, social skills, coping skills & independence.

I think he was brainwashed by the parents, causing him to be susceptible to brainwashing of another type entirely.
When I learn about horrific cases like this one my first thought is “How could they NOT have seen this coming?” Well - good people who are just living their lives don’t entertain thoughts of Evil coming to their door. I’ve had a hard time trying to be cautious of dangers in this scary world and still keep my sense of wonder and love of life. I assume most of us live with similar quandaries day-to-day. Those parents were tragically naïve about their son’s issues and his relationship with an obvious psychopath (just look at her expression & body language). It’s tragic that they couldn’t step out of their Utopian haze to see exactly what was in front of them. But how could they wrap their minds around the Evil so close to their beloved Paradise? It’s almost a “too good to be true” tragedy. Thanks Stephanie for bringing us this story - it’s a profound lesson. (Whatever happened to that beautiful farm and animals?)
I live about 22 miles west Of Dallas Oregon. This was so very sad when it happened. They were such down to earth people.
Awe in those clips they seem so kind and down-to-earth. Really humanizes the couple. So sad what happened to them. Praying they now only know eternal peace.

I think he changed his story once he was away from her toxic energy. If you've ever been around a really dark, manipulative person, you know what I mean. The clouds of confusion clear and you can think again. (Not excusing Andrew's heinous acts in any way!)

Wow. I’d be interested in knowing more about Andrew’s biological parents. Was their violence, mental illness, criminal behavior, low IQ etc. The whole gambit of information on them , because that could really shed some light on if he had a genetic predisposition to violence, suggestibility, or any other underlying issues that would contribute to a 20 year old man and child fulfill Cindy Lou’s sick fantasy and “prophetic visions” of a son murdering his adopted, loving parents. Great video as always Stephanie. You’re simply one of the best, quickest and unbelievably thorough researchers and storytellers I’ve witnessed.

I think Andrew may have been resentful being left on the farm while his brothers were able to escape from the farm.
Being home schooled didn't help, as he was socially awkward and had a shelter life. He wanted the same freedom as his brothers found.
Cindy represented freedom and fun, especially as he hadn't experienced in his life.

I have heard this story a few times and want to say that I appreciate that you are the first person to tell the story without making fun of or focusing on Cindy’s unfortunate physical appearance. So many others can’t get past the question of why a young guy would ever fall for someone who looks like *that* and the true tragedy gets lost. Besides, she’s ugly enough on the inside - commenting on her looks is unnecessary.

I grew up in Dallas. This was so incredibly shocking. This is a tiny farm town that things like this don't happen in. I remember two murders there in my entire lifetime, both were kids killing their parents. I don't know how Stephanie even FOUND this case, lol.
It hits a little harder watching videos of victims. They are so blissfully unaware of the tragic demise that’s coming. Its very sad. 😢

As someone who was moved age 4 to a smallholding in the remote countryside of England, I can understand if Andrew had resentment for his parents.
The area provided poor education opportunities, little in the way of activities like even just going to the cinema, and limited career options. On top of that, you're expected to help run the farm that you never agreed to.
But you grow up, get over it and make a life for yourself that works better for you.
While I can kind of understand that he was manipulated in some way, I have 0 sympathy for a son who was raised lovingly and then murdered his parents in cold blood.
I think Andrew is as much of a monster as Cindy, if not the bigger. The murder was heartless, planned and gruesome.

This reminds me more of the case about that family from Wife Swap. It doesn’t sound to me like these people were as extreme with sheltering their kids as that family was but it’s definitely a big similarity.
I was relatively sheltered growing up (not as much as these guys were), and trust me, don’t wish you were sheltered. It’s isolating enough to take away tech these days, but for him to grow up with barely any friends?? He’s not nearly as socialized as he should be. Of course this doesn’t excuse him from his actions, but I don’t think people realize how far that type of childhood sets you back in life

When my son was younger he missed he ( insane girlfriend) I was thinking that if he goes back with her then he is crazy as she is. I told him maybe you should try again, maybe it would work this time , he said I don't want to get hurt again. He never went back. Thank God God
Attorney here. Good description of the slippery slope. Laypeople love to throw out comments such as, "you KNOW she knew", or "you KNOW she TOLD him to do x"... The issue is, there are statutory requirements that the prosecution has to be able to prove, for whatever crime they want to charge the theoretical accessory with. There MUST be tangible PROOF of involvement, preparation, OVERT ACTS toward the crime, etc...without that, you can't go after them regardless of how much you FEEL they played a part. Feelings don't matter in the legal system, you've got to have a winnable case and proof. Another thing I'd like to mention, probably not popular, but you're rolling the dice when you adopt someone. I would LOVE to know this kid's bio parents' backgrounds. It is way more statistically prevalent that adopted kids kill their adoptive parents than it should be. Genetics has a lot to do with this, whether people want to admit that or not. Many, if not most kids that are adopted are put up for adoption for a reason, and that reason is often criminal/bad character/bad traits in nature. It's just uncanny how often this happens. Anyway, another great story and presentation.
Girl yes!!! I am so exhausted with the lack of accountability so many people have recently. The whole defense of Andrew had the mental capacity of a twelve year old is ridiculous even if that was the case. At twelve you generally know murder is wrong, and from what is known about his upbringing and family Andrew was raised to understand right from wrong.
I don't know why but it always feels that bit worse when you find out the killers were adopted. Those parents choose you and choose to love you for your whole life when others didn't't or couldn't. They possibly have given them the most amazing life especially compared to care 😢 (if this makes sense lol)
