Volvo 850 TDi on the dyno... 140 bhp when new, how much in 2023?

- After taking the gold Volvo 850 T5 to Performance Remap, it was time to try out the trusty 850 TDi on the rollers... From the factory this car should be around 140hp, but will 25 years and almost 200,000 miles have been kind to the dirty diesel? Will we even crack 100hp, or will the unit get smoked out first? Join me for a relaxed Dyno adventure with the brilliant Chris. There's also a montage of my time with this car, including some of the work that's gone into what is definitely my favourite Volvo ever. #ClassicCars #HorsePower #WhilstlinDiesel

Nice. In my experience engines don’t necessarily lose power with miles, and usually if an engine is down on power it’s to do with carbon built up, or an electrical or fuelling issue rather than milage induced engine wear. I’ve pulled engines down with ridiculous miles on them with no measurable wear. Modern oils and materials are that good that power loss over time is only really a thing in engines that haven’t been looked after these days.
P.s. I suspect that the pump timing being out is what has given you the extra power. I’m sure I remember it being a thing to advance the pump a smidge to get more power and let the engine pull better higher up the rev range on these engines but I could be mistaken. If that’s the case you’ve probably got a louder than normal idle. I just went on with myself, nobody has probably even read this comment 😂
Awesome result! You can't beat high mileage diesels! My 230,000 mile Jag X-type was still performing as new after 12 years of ownership before i crashed it! It's replacement a Merc C220 CDI Estate with a relatively minor 150,000 under it's belt has just averaged 69 mpg on a thousand mile camping holiday fully loaded. 10k oil change intervals with good oil and they just keep getting better as the motors loosen up!
Brilliant Geoff. Just keep them coming mate 👍
Fantastic result Geoff! Love the family holiday scenes too mate🔥
Im a swede and i DO NOT brake for greta at a crosswalk....
I’m surprised at how good that sounds, smashing old bus 👍🏼
Slowly becoming my absolute favourite CZcams channel. Can easily watch your videos from start to end. Cheers mate!
Thanks for that man…! I look at the analytics and there’s an ‘average view duration’, I’m always like ‘I edited the video right to the end for a reason!!’ 😂😂😂
@@GeoffBuysCars you put in the effort, we do the time!
Old volvos never dies if maintained properly
That's very interesting and must mean that your TDi has been looked after. Makes me want to get mine onto a dyno now to see what it gets
Come on down and we can do it!
@@GeoffBuysCars Absolutely! It'll be interesting to see how it compares. I still need to send you a message about it - I have started but it's in my drafts folder. The car's been at the garage for the last couple of weeks as there was quite a bad oil leak coming from the oil pump - the garage wanted to do this along with the timing belt and injection pump belt as one job.
MOT has now expired but they'll be doing that. Hopefully it'll be ready by the end of this week. Two new front wings are being painted for it. I got some Columba wheels for it but they need refurbing, I'm thinking a darker grey but not too dark. Few various spares (the boot's basically filled with bits for it), I've fitted later V70 wiper arms for it so now the wipers actually clean the windscreen rather than lift off it. Just waiting for it to get warmer so I can do more on it.
Hi Geoff, I had this engine in a V70 TDI and that car seemed to fly for the supposed 140hp
Yep I ran a T5 alongside a TDi and while the T5 was much smoother the derv didn’t really disgrace itself. It also did an extra 20 mpg.
@@Stratoszero I also had the same engine in an Audi A6 C4 TDI Quattro, I had a map on that and it was pretty impressive for a derv
That result doesn’t surprise me at all. A friend of mine and also a huge Volvo fanatic used to work for European haulage company that had a VW van with this engine that had done 1700000 km before got retired due to new regulations forcing companies in to buying ‘cleaner’ vehicles.
I myself had a 1999 and 2000 V70’s with the same engine and did a lot of trips trough Europe without a single issue. Wish I had never sold mine😢
My old 850.tdi was the same no power loss and my old s80 d5 actually came in 9bhp over the stated bhp before the remap at Celtic tuning. But unfortunately had a cam belt tensioner fail.on the 850 so it's been sat on the drive past 18months shame as I loved that car.
Same here with my C70 D4 (5 cyl) supposed to turn out 177 bhp, but was churning out 186 bhp before the Celtic Tuning brought it up to 209 bhp, and that was before I had changed the clogged up fuel filter, definitely faster when I changed it, think it's nearer what Celtic Tuning said it should produce after tuning (215 bhp) had 100,000 miles on the clock at the time.
My first Volvo was a V70 tdi. Always been looked after by the previous owner. Bought it at around 170000 miles. It was a dream to drive. Still miss it until this day. It was so economical yet so cool and chill to drive!
That's a great result, so I would say that sometime in it's high miles life the engine has had a remap !
Cast iron block and high quality internals, if even reasonably looked after they gain compression during their lifespan so as long as fuel pump and injectors aren't worn out they can gain a small amount of power.
Watched it now Geoff, what a ride! Love it, cannot wait to get my own D24, interesting it makes more power than a new VW transporter with the same engine
Wasn't a new transporter, was a T4, there were a few iterations of the 2.5 TDI, the last of the T4's were available with a 150bhp version, which is probably the same as what's fitted to the Volvo.
In fact lower power transporters it's common to fit injectors from the V70 when tuning for more power.
The engine originally came from an Audi 100.
Result Geoff, You are supposed to use Vida to time the pump on these but i just use an old fashioned DTI gauge! I always go for a smidge advanced as they then start better from cold! 👍
Mine hates starting whatever the weather but it pretty much refuses when warm 😂
@@GeoffBuysCars Your pump timing is too advanced by the sound of it mate? Advanced pump timing gives you better cold starting but sluggish hot starting and vice versa in my experience.
Love Chris🤩...Always smiling, honest and modest
"There's a service light on the dashboard ..." - "... comes and goes!" That's a remark only a person in charge and knowing about the service state of their cars can make in such a manner. Congrats. You are of a dying breed. Even most men today go to their stealership when that service light comes on.
Knowing your car is such an important thing…! This car is always lethargic to start thanks to the slightly advanced fuel pump but it always fires… but it does make people think ‘why is he driving that old heap?!’
Thank you.
I once had an old Wentworth. The model won the touring car championship. Big tow bar and no one tailgated me.
No one tailgated me when I had an F reg Merc saloon either, despite no tow bar.
Further back I had an old Nissan three door saloon. No one much cared about tailgating me as it wouldn't be much on their insurance.
Old Greta was caught out the other day she said in 2018 the world would end in 5years .....if we didn't change our ways ,liking your content your getting me going..
Why do you love it? The holiday montage says so much 😊
I had one of these TDA's- it's great as an automatic and when I sold these to custys, I always tried to bump them into getting an automatic.
90s Volvo Brick ❤
Top result Geoff not really a test as its only just run in lol, what a result loved it cant wait to see these electric cars after 25 plus years most likely all recycled into cans. Top video once again.
sounded sweet.
What a unit. Love it when these things happen.
i had a m reg 850 T5 when i was 21 around 14 years ago. i paid 350 quid off a mate and it was well known for smoking all sorts around town. admittedly going up against ppl who couldnt drive but i smoked a corsa vxr at pod. still on here somwhere lol
corsa vxr vs t5 on here lol
Was ex police V70 at York Drag strip back in the day got smoked off everything in turbo class including my Maestro T16 Turbo van! Mind still love the T5 my brother has a phase 1 Xc70 and a 940 turbo do love a flying brick!
@@micksroversmg558 haha a man of culture. i like it! i love a good sleeper and the 940 was rwd as it should be
@@micksroversmg558 maestro van lol respect
@@MCsmileyB Cheers love mad sleeper! Got too keep it old school too!
Drop in to say hello any time you’re on the A7 near Valence Geoff 👍
Time fora Saab 9-5 Aero video mate 😉
Lol, you mean, a Saab 9000 aero!
Superb sound on top of a great result.
Awesome result!
Excellent Coldplay dis 😂
Quite easy to adjust the waste gate spring so you make more boost. 😊
With decat and egr blank should do around 150 ya
Brilliant result and just shows whats possible when spending practically nothing to buy a car !
How dare you Geoff, i should be at school but instead i am here watching you tube videos. 😂😂
6.55 its like the millennium falcon revving up,
Brilliant family car
Saving for later 👀😅
Man, I really wish we got diesel 850s here in the USA
These old audi engine are known to be rather good. This dyno test proves that again. possibly it is already tuned!
still running a leon mk1 pd150 , mapped it not long after makes the car allot smother the turbo boost and that was 2011 i still get a buzz but use an additive as theirs some fuel out there that don't add additives to fuel or if they do its not as good as premium fuels
Love it!
You need Bosch KTS diagnostic tool to connect itand then you can set the timings correctly, remember Audi's are different and will not work!
If you have a D5 it would be interesting to see how much power that makes.
Love a 5cyl diesel ❤️
Personally loved the Coldplay comment 😂
Well bedded in vw power ! Old cars rule!!
You were meant to be going to Oostend!... haha...
Poor greta, she will be choking with tears ! not the Diesel fumes.
Top Job ❤ X
Get Darkside on it!
Sadiq Khan is as good as a Mayor as he is following his faith. Which he uses each time he gets called something racist or Islamophobic. He's as religious as a drunkard homeless on the streets. No offence to the drunkards.
I've gone back to listen to that love letter for Jeremy Clarkson as it did something to me too. All the car journeys to Nans house. Shopping trips. School runs. The family car literally put the Great into our nation.
This is what the government is against. You see they want to bring our children up. They want to make everything expensive so we can't spend any time together as a family. So everyone's constantly stressed and overworking. By then if something awful happens. We don't have anyone to speak to. Because we could spend enough time with family. Cars gone and the family ties are gone.
All the rotten evil people have wormed their way to power and now are making the rules for us.
What a supremely powerful comment.
@@GeoffBuysCars Thought that myself! Man is bang on with all that is wrong! They hate us buying cheap cars this is why the emissions tax are coming in old cars with sympathetic owner can last forever! Some get better as they age with the right owner!
Great thumbnail 🤣
Hi geoff or anyone im thinking off gatting rid of my mint E38 728I . For a volvo C70 T5 good or bad move .
Happy days glad to see poke in the old girl😂
That's what you get when you look after your car and service it regularly. Impressive. So there's still a lot of life left in this old Swedish brick...
Would love to know what my 1998 v70 tdi is like in comparison as still pulls like a train
And to think I treaded my 850 t5 for a skoda octavia estate it was rust free red like yours 😢😢.for £1500
So wish I’d kept mine.. 😢
Hahaha bloody coldplay😅
How long did it take you to drive to the Algarve?
You're stealing Greata's childhood you heathen. 😂
if you want an easy way to make a little more power then you should slap an evry mod on it!
Perhaps its because its well worn in and nice and loose.
Gotta have been chipped?
Love the Greta thumbnail! Made me laugh, can you do a t-shirt of that please?
Evry mod 👍 but rolling coal is a side effect 🤦♂️✌️
When volvos age they dont lose power, they gain power lol
That's been my experience too, bought a Volvo C70 with 98,000 miles on the clock, went to have it tuned, was put on a rolling road and it was turning out 186 bhp when it should be 177 bhp as according to the handbook !
So I watch "CZcams's most boring car channel", says a lot about me I guess.....thanks Geoff 😁
💥💥💥💥🎆🎇🧨🥂🍻🍺🍾
That should put a spring in your step Geoff. Genuinely pleased for you kiddo.
Proof that the oldies are the beasties and ev's are nothing more than Satan's toys.
I have a 60 plate S204 and like you I love my weasel estate to bits.
I've toyed with buying a newer one but I just don't like them.
In my opinion they're just butt ugly.
If I was filthy rich I'd only buy 60's and 70's cars and restore them to better than ticket condition.
I know, dream on, one day the numbers'll come up and you and I will go shopping 😉😎
Gr8 holiday montage BTW.
Mrs Geoff should have a seat in Westminster, she lies well 🤣😂🤣
A fiver indeed 😡
now try it with evrymod 😂
Volvo and Audi 5’s sound the best, followed by VR6 Volkswagens….then V8’s
Fiat 5 cylinder 20v turbo also sound good.
How dare you!!!
@12:36 Yes, Geoff but driving a rotten shell with a good engine and gearbox wouldn't make any sense.
Volvo, boxy, but good.
Don't be deceived by its appearance. That's a legacy myth curtesy of those 240, 260, 140, series predecessors (240T was doing well wooping Nissan Skylines, Holdens in Australia's touring car series back in the day. So yet another myth). The cd figure is very good and its curb weight is too. Don't know figures off the top of my head. Would need to look them up.
OvvO
Don't be greedy Geoff. "Geoff Kills Cars"...not such a good title🥴
Which diesel engine is this? OH, the Audi one. Lesson to self, watch to the end first!!
2.5, volkswagen / audi 5 pot
@@GeoffBuysCars Thanks!
How dare you Geoff!!!!
Diesel car cleaner running than petrol CO2 is biodegradable 100%
Volvo they used to be the best but new one's you need a big wallet
We also are going to die in 2023 when still using coal too, 8 years from 2015,
And these climate activist just seem to walk about with no batteries not included in there brain cells,
This car industry is on the verge of collapsing the way things are going as to thinking it's all going to be an Electric Dream.
