Reducing Right Side Bend - Simple Drill & Feels

  • If you are player that ever struggles getting through the shot this one is for you!
Too much right side bend or lateral flexion of the torso can lead to fat shots, thins, pushes and hooks. Often the this pattern coming into the ball is in response to movement in backswing and transition. However here are a few feels that will directly focus on improving your swing through the hit.
    Hope they help!
Thanks for watching and enjoy the process!

Thank you for this video - was a random CZcams search. Was working with my coach on “getting more down” with my irons, and reducing my right side bend (was a tennis player so I’m fighting years of instinctual tennis feels of hitting inside out forehand) and we worked on a couple of feels that were semi-working.
Wasn’t until I found this video that I could really visualize the being tall and straight on my follow through. I’ve played my 4 best rounds since finding this video all breaking 80. Really I think a massive problem for golfers at all levels, and I’m a 5 HCP

I am glad to have found this video. I think that I also have too much side bend in the downswing, even can see it on 20-30 yard pitch shots at times, where the club gets too flat coming down and the club brushes the grass before it gets to the ball. Focusing on starting the downswing with more focus on the right shoulder seemed to help, and now after watching this video it is easier to understand why. Thanks for posting on this. One of the symptoms of this problem is feeling that you have stayed down well on the shot, the contact feels pretty good and the ball goes way right, more of a big straight push, even with the short irons at times.

Thanks for this! 18 and have back problems when I finish a range session because of how aggressively I side bend. I know I might lose some power but feels worth it if I don't have to get my back replaced at 30 lol

I think my exaggerated side bend has caused constant back pain after every round. Hope these drills help.

Not a lot of content on YT on lateral bend reduction. Thank you

Thanks James, if you have any more questions on this subject let me know! Maybe I will look at doing a few more on this topic.👊

@@IanMellorGolf well I am a scratch player and one of my tendencies is to always struggle with too much lateral bend especially with the longer clubs in my bag. Fairway woods I tend to get my bottom-out point messed up and I start inching towards tops and thinny fairway wood strikes and then with the driver it can start to hurt my ability to work the ball because MY tendency is to add too much shaft lean (with driver and fairway woods). So any topic that revolves around this as it pertains to driver or any top-end of the bag is extremely appreciated. Im even more thankful for people like you who address this topic because with driver where I'm trying to feel a more ascending strike its really a conflicting FEEL to stay back behind a bit without getting messed up with excess bend. I don't know exactly how I want to address the issue because of that conflicting feel so I go through streaky periods of hitting driver or fairway wood well and then periods where I'm complete ass. Very fustrating as it maked playing tournaments a bit more stressful than it should

Let me consider this and shoot something on it. I have coached quite a few players with a similar pattern.

I've been battling with this for a while...it has been frustrating missing both ways and hitting fat and thin.. a coach gave me a drill to feel like my chest was covering the ball but your advice to feel that trail shoulder going through the ball is the one that has helped me the most. Its cleaned up so many faults and I think my handicap will be coming down because of it.. I'm curious - should we also be focusing on the left shoulder clearing away left at any point or will that happen naturally? thanks for your video.

Hi Apriyan, please let me know if it does!
It is very common to see young players right bend (hang back) in the golf swing a higher amount than adults simply because their bodies are still developing and how they are achieving the force in their swing. Good luck to your daughter and let me know if you have any questions.

With the beard, you look a bit like Tommy Fleetwood. Now he does have a lot of side bend which is the opposite of what you are saying and he definitely has amazing ball contact and does not hit it fat, so once again on CZcams, one person (you) says one thing which is totally opposite to the real world of golf pro’s. Look at Jochem Neiman, he has an insane right side bend (which personally hurts my back just watching him) but it works for him. My own opinion is that depending on your body type, I.e. fat, thin, tall short, the amount of side bend will be variable.

Hi Robert, I think you may have misunderstood me a little in the video. It is geared towards players that would like to reduce their right side bend. At the time I had had a number of players ask me this question. I have also measured a lot of players on the 3D system and had them screened by the dr that moved through ranges with this movement that were not healthy for their body. I have a feeling you may be thinking that I am suggesting all right side bend is bad. I actually look at it in the way that a player would move best achieving a nice blend of trail side bend, forward bend and rotation amongst other movements through the shot. So I am absolutely an advocate that all players are different anatomically and so what is a good value for trail side bend for one player is not good for another.

The impact position you are demonstrating at 4:30 has right knee kicked in way too far. This would cause the upper body to tilt backwards and the low point to move way behind the ball. Looks horrible, sorry.
