Highlights of the Men's Omnium 4km Individual Pursuit during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Cycling is among the rare sports that have always featured on the Olympic programme. Road cycling, however, was not on the programme of the Paris 1900, St Louis 1904 or London 1908 Games, while track cycling wasn't in the programme of the Stockholm 1912 Games.
The first road event in Olympic history took place in 1896 on the marathon route at the first Games of the modern era in Athens. The race started in Athens, headed towards Marathon, then returned to Athens, at the Phaliron velodrome.
Olympic cycling was added to the women's programme in Los Angeles in 1984, with an individual road event.

It's because they have to wait for the signal because the gates won't release them otherwise and if you go before the gate lets you (jumping that gate) you will fall

Can someone explain the wheels on these bikes? Why are they solid/filled in?

Comparatively, spoke-tensioned wheels are lighter (less mass to carry uphill, quicker acceleration), are safer in a crosswind (and require less strain to keep upright), and are usually less fragile. "Horses for courses", so they say. That's why you see spoked wheels in most stages of outdoor races (perhaps with a shallow dish) like the TdF.

for a race of this length heavier wheels could be of advantage I challenge the athletes to run trials of air inflation vrs water inflation to show this. I personally own a 7 and 12 pound disk of which I constructed.

You need to learn a lot about rotational weight, centripetal force, centrifugal force, and inertia.
