  • Indonesian trans people, or Warias, still feel the urge to practice Islam despite being shunned by Islamic Authorities.
We headed to Indonesia to visit the Senin-Kamis School, an Islamic school for Indonesian trans people. Our host, Hannah Brooks, meets the school's founder, Maryani, and the rest of the ladies who call this place home. Then Hannah is taken to a local funeral, where Maryani speaks about the difficulties of living as trans and a practicing Muslim.

andrielisilien Hello :) I don't think this is right. Of course your children are very very important, but parents stay women, men, lovers, girls, boys,... with individual dreams even if they have children. Your own life is as important as your children's.

I don't care what religion people believe in or whether they believe in no religion. People should just be nice to others and not cause harm. Show some respect. They're not cramping other people's personal everyday lives. It's their life. They deserve to be happy.

How could be that people are so attached to religion?to something that was created so far away in time whose points couldn't fit and understand the contemporary society! We have come far in terms of civil rights human rights freedom and we have become more opened about diversity but still people rather than try to see through differencies would prefer seeing what's written in some old holy books!now i wonder what's religion? Something that allow you to love and understand and be united to other human beings or just an excuse to hate and judge others more openly and freely??

How could it be anything other than natural since we are natural creatures. as for transsexuals i don't know enough about whats going on to say anything but why is it so hard for people to accept who they are and leave them alone. I'm Muslim and I consider myself rather religious and educated about my religion, and I also consider myself a very open minded person. I watched this documentary because the idea of a Muslim transsexual is intriguing. Being transgender or gay is haram and naturally you would think that being Muslim and transgender would be contradictory, but just like they said at the end of the video, it is up to Allah (swt) to judge all human beings. One of the greatest sins in Islam is judging other people, and all of the people who continue to call the subjects of this video out for doing haram things are no better than them. Yes, they claimed to be Muslims while participating in drinking and prostitution, but no Muslim is perfect and sin free. Remember that Allah (swt) is all forgiving and merciful and they still have the potential to seek forgiveness from Allah (swt) for their sins. We do not know the relationship between these people and Allah (swt), so we can not judge them for what we see them do or what they are.
It's perfectly understandable if you're Muslim and the thought of a transgender Muslim makes you uncomfortable, but the best thing is to not worry about other people's sins and try to strengthen your own relationship between you and Allah (swt) for you will be judged by your sins, not others'.

You're an idiot, that's the law of the sharia and that was his idea punishment when the sahabas were trying to make the sharia and of course they listened to him. You can't kill gays in countries without a law abiding by it. In saudi, if you get caught by the public being gay, then they will execute you, but no random person can just go and kill them, they don't have the authority to do that, the person that was caught MUST go to court first. no civilian has the right to murder another even if they do shirk, only if they are caught doing it, the judge sentences them to the punishment, then the HADD must be carried out, that's what they did during the prophets time.

    • @Deaxon1
      @Deaxon1 Před 9 lety +6

No,'you have it wrong. Only in the muslim countries can they do that because the suSpected sinner has to go through court. You can't just randomly kill a homosexual or a polytheist in a country with no muslim leader.

Torben Rudgaard Ladyboys is a horrible name. However there is a huge difference between a transvestite (ladyboy) and a transsexual. Ladyboy is the equivalent of the word shemale, and both are equally as offensive to a woman trapped in the wrong body (transsexual). Ladyboys originally never meant transsexuals. That is something ignorant people have associated them with, but ladyboys were originally the asian version of a drag queen pretty much.

moevana12 If god designed male and female, why is it that so many people fall out of those categories? Who are born without clear definition to either? If god designed human beings then surely he designed whoever appears on the earth since for those who have christian faith believe he created everything?? Pretty sure god didn't go 'oops, my bad, that one was a mistake' and then do it MILLIONS more times. If he had a 'template' for how people were supposed to be, then either that template is different from the one you seem to think it is, or he truly is a master of exceptions to the rule.

    • @Gelphratchoo
      @Gelphratchoo Před 9 lety +14

Not true. There are PLENTY of people who fall out of those categories and have different gender identities. The fact that you don't see those people talking about it in every day life is because they are judged - exactly how you are doing now. There are a BUNCH of different criteria that are used to define biological sex at birth. Genitalia is only one of them. The others are things like Hormones, Chromosomes, Gonads (Uterus/Testes) or Secondary Sex Characteristics such as facial hair. There is such a thing as someone who is intersex. Someone who doesn't fit the criteria for one or the other. Gender is so much more variable than you think, and just because you haven't educated yourself about it, doesn't mean it's okay to inflict that lack of knowledge on other people. You think you know everything. You do not.

In the book of Acts, Peter receives a dream from God about the pork, etc. issue. 1 Corinthians is in the New Testament, thus being proof that we should still pay attention to that Leviticus verse.
What greatly amuses me is that I used the ESV version and you obviously used NIV, but you're saying I "added" something. "Men" can go for women too. For example, when I'm writing a paper, I usually write "he" as the dominant pronoun as a shortener for "he or she" when I am making a generalization.

You missed out the eternal hell-fire if you don't follow a rigid and contradicting set of rules. Its hardly free will when someone had a gun pointed at you.
Also the fact why God simply does not remove Sin, instead lets everybody suffer while testing them.

Nafolchan They said it was their only options with "being a thief" and if they're rejected by many peoples it's hard to imagine them having more "casual" jobs. Maybe it's possible despite the rejection they encountered but it must be harder for sure.
At least they didn't choose the "thief way" and ask you to give them some money instead of merely stealing it like they could be tempted to do in such situations.
They were "leaving home without money" according to what they say in this video so if their parents didn't help them when they leaved the house being younger, they probably don't help them now they're adults...
No financial support and more difficulties than most of the peoples to find a stable job and you easily understand the "street singing" thing.
Not soul_destroying like selling your body and more honnest than to simply rob peoples.

***** dont bother fighting with this Nur. She's a Malaysian and Malaysia is an Islamic nation. The views of Islam over here (yes I'm Malaysian myself) is rather extreme. Few examples: 1. Christians are literally forbidden to say Allah, but the funny thing is Allah is literally 'God', in Arabic, and Islam doesn't hold any right to the world 'Allah'. 2. Not allowed to wish Merry Christmas to people who celebrate, or Valentines, or even Mothers day. Its a shirk. Even if your intention was to wish others who celebrate. Only god knows when our birthdays are illegal for Muslims to celebrate to just because some highly educated Mufti's issued fatwas thinking its for the god almighty. Yeah, Syria's new fatwa about allowing the raping of non-Sunni Muslim's is really great for the god almighty. Allahuakbar. *sarcastic
This Nur, clearly is indoctrinated heavily about a rather narrow view in Islam (again, quite extreme), because in Malaysia the national TV channels shows lectures from religious people, and this religious people gives narrow, traditional views, not open minded at all. Its not only on TV channels, its also on radios, every single day. She is defending her religion indeed, but its from her view. Indonesians on the other hand is more open, therefore they have their own view about transsexuals and about god accepting them for who they are. In real truth, Islam does not accept transsexuals, but who are we to judge them? Are we really that perfect, to judge someone else? To Nur, she is. Why? Islamic indoctrination and holier-than-thou attitude at its best.

No one believes its a virus. It is a mental disorder. It's the same as a person believing they were a dog and that they need to have sex with dogs because of it. It's the same as a person tricking themselves that they come from mars or that they are in need of murdering people because that's apparently "who they are". Not only did this man mutilate his body, he tries to make others believe he's something he's not. If some guy comes out and says he's a road will you run over him? No, you wouldn't, unless you were some kind of psycho. If I go and buy a police uniform, car, and gun does that make me a police officer? No, it doesn't. I'm just playing dress up and pretending to be something I'm not. I'm not being negative by saying this, I'm only speaking the truth. It literally makes me sad that you people can't see the truth. And instead of trying to understand the truth you all treat me as a bigot when I share my opinions on things if it's not the same as the more powerful party's opinion. And it's true that those kinds of behaviors can spread with close relations and contact with a person. It's called peer pressure and it's taught in Psychology 1101 as a Freshman in college (I'm not sure of the ages of everyone or when or if you went to college and how college was or will be when you go or went, but that's how it is for me). When people are in close contact you take on behaviors from one another and take on behaviors you see on the regular bases. People are social beings. You will find yourself or subconsciously start behaving more and more like the people around you. Everyone is born with a personality, but it can be slightly altered by your surroundings. An influential person who has not strong held their own personality, like most millennials these days, is highly susceptible to the unnatural behavior of homosexuality. I don't care if you want to keep being the way you're being, but don't act like it's something normal or that should be accepted.

However, those girls whom she supports are in prostitution and she knows that. I was talking about not her but I was talking about the other girls who are in it. If she must support them, then she should have taken them away from this nasty job. It seems to me that she is allowing them to do it even though she is no longer in it. Even some of them are students at the Quran school. And they learn quran during the day time, and they go to prostitution at night. And the woman knows what is happening. And she is not prohibiting them from doing it. This is totally unacceptable. As a muslim, I have responsibility to condemn what is morally and socially bad. I don't need to be Allah to see what's not right. Allah gave me the intellect so it's up to me to follow the rightous path. Hope you undestand my point.

I think semi religious people and atheists would like that, but I dont think its possible since following a religion, really obeying and submitting to a religion means following and believing in all its rules. People who aren't very religious believe in love and kindness above all, some call it religion and might throw in a few things from the bible or koran now and then, but really don't live by the bibles word fully.
Many religious people, especially those that aren't from the western world, think love and righteousness comes from following Gods word, not from humans interpretation of kindness and love (as in respecting all people and religions).
Nowadays there is a tendency in western society to slightly "bend" the rules when it comes to religion, to better fit todays standard. Like believing and preaching that certain parts of the holy book, weigh more heavily than other parts. For example: Homosexual christians and supporters believe that kindness will salvage them, even though sodomy is described as a sin in the bible. Religious transsexuals believe this as well, although both the bible and koran say body mutilation is a sin. Another example is muslims who are friends with christians which the koran say is a sin. etc. etc.
Religious people that really truly believe every word of their holy book, and try to live by it, would not be able to do that - while accepting all people and religions. Its just NOT possible.
I am not religious by the way, like most western people I just want all to get along.

Warias existed in Makkah. The people wanted to kill them but the Prophet (s) said they pray like Muslims and they have the right to live like a Muslim who prays. They were given a space between Makkah and Medina to live. It is best now, according to a growing number of ulama, to have gender confirmation surgery to correct the disconnect between mind and body, just as it's best to fix any other physical error. Once their bodies match their gender, trans women should abide by the shariah for women. They should marry, observe hijab, and inherit as a woman.

The fact that they smoke in the school, see prostitution, stealing and drinking as being okay, shows that they know next to nothing about Islam. our religion does not accept transgender, although that does not mean that people should treat them like crap, they should be talked to and if they wish to live that way then so be it that's up to them, but they shouldn't be teaching others that its okay.

+ThatArabgirl I see it in another light. I don't think it's right for you to decide whether or not they "understand" Islam. Your definition of Islam will be very different than the person next to you. Sure there are certainly things that the religion does not condone of, such as those you have mentioned above. However, most Indonesian men smoke, in and out of public buildings. Do 'they' understand Islam? How about those who were born with a female genitalia, but are unable to financially provide for themselves? And are then forced into the night life? Are they "good" muslims? Like everything else, it's not black or white. PLUS, I don't think they're trying to teach others that those^ actions are "okay". I think they're trying to spread a more accepting tone to not only other warias, but also to other people in general. A safe space of warias, for warias.

I live in Malaysia and I have a few friends which are bisexual but their love for God is never enough. They're being left alone without people giving love and attention as much as people care about the non bisexuals. As a human, we would never run from making mistakes and sins. So why do we need to bother about them? They're all still humans. They have the rights to live. Society is stupid for neglecting them.

but hear me out. In Islam when someone is gay/trans ect... as Muslims we can only advise them, we cannot be aggressive or harm them we can only tell them its wrong, if they do not listen then its up to Allah and not us as humans to judge.
We do what we can and if nothing works then as they said "humans aren't gods" so we should keep our mouths shut and let Allah do the judging.
I'm a Muslim and MY personal advice is whenever I see someone who is gay/trans ect.. all I do is just leave them to it, in the end its their life we are all being judged separately, not together.

I live in a predominantly Christian province and happen to live in the place near the waria's place of business. They always stand on the road after 11 to wait for their customers to pick them up with cars. They generally don't do any harm to the local residences but i think we shouldn't mock them because they can turn into a criminal and kill you, they're very sensitive. Anyway, i think Indonesia's law doesn't criminalise the act of being a waria, though street prostitution is illegal. So, you could simply see them like anywhere, some of them dress as women and the other dress as men. I perceive waria as brave people because they're brave enough to be who they want to be. You can find waria or gay celebrities performing on TV. Indonesia is somewhat strange. It's strict in terms of norms and culture but on the other hand it's also an open society where tolerance and freedom of expression are appreciated.

There are two types; the first is the one in whom these characteristics are innate, he did not put them on by himself, and therein is no guilt, no blame and no shame, as long as he does not perform any (illicit) act or exploit it for money (prostitution etc.). The second type acts like a woman out of immoral purposes and he is the sinner and blameworthy.[3]
Furthermore there is the observation of Ibn Abd Al-Barr who was a contemporary of An-Nawawi:
The mukhannath is not only the one who is known to be promiscuous. The mukhannath is (also?) the one who looks so much like a woman physically that he resembles women in his softness, speech, appearance, accent and thinking. If he is like this, he would have no desire for women and he would not notice anything about them. This is one of those who have no interest in women who were permitted to enter upon women".....
Next time you might want to read more, in stead of being an asshole to ur fellow muslims..

asri hashim Hey genius, you may be getting transgender & hermaphrodite confused. Hermaphrodite/Intersex individuals are born with ambigous genitals of both sexes.
Sigh, obviously it is not their fault.
Transgender is not the same thing & is most definitely haram.
Tone your overzealousness down a notch & try opening a Quran or reading from Sahih Hadith.
Your da'if Hadith prove nothing other than that you are trying to defend a lifestyle against the Sunnah of the Rasullulah (P.B.U.H.).
      Good luck with that.

I found this report to be very informative and it offered a very unique view on a population of people that I have never heard of or knew anything about. As an atheist I find the dogma of most religions to be oppressive but I do like the people who can find ways to make better lives for themselves and others from it and would never deny anyone to practice what they thought was right, so long as it does not harm others or force others to practice what they do not believe. Thank you very much for this report.

i also made a documentary about warias in jakarta before the ones who does a street performance and they're all a new comers in jakarta. its sad i remembered me and my friends and all of them getting chased by the police. they became warias mostly because they want to get money to sent it to their love ones in their home towns, some of them are a father and some of their family dont know what they're doing in jakarta but they demanding them to send them money monthly thats why they became a waria. and a lot of people mocked them and curse at them but there many more people who actually happy and dancing with them. im glad that i decided to take that theme as my documentary because i learned a lot from them. and i know hanna and all the crews felt that too

Good doc. I thought it was a little odd that the only person (later part of the film) on the scooters not wearing a helmet was the child.

These comments make me pissed off. First you have to know that there's nothing in the Quran that it's haram. Hpmosexuality is haram in the Quran but not transsexualism. In irak and iran etc its legal to be trans and the state will pay for your gender resentment surgery. What the point is is that it isn't culturally accepted, but the real Islamic leaders tell that this isn't haram and transsexuals are a loud to get surgery. So before some of you Muslim's say that it's haram look at your own sins and study the Quran.
