I once had a nightmare that I was in a locked classroom with the blinds down, all by myself. Out of nowhere, the fearful harmony theme and personified fear began playing. It was so scary I woke up making a moaning sound, probably trying to scream. It was probably the scariest nightmare I’ve had.
I had a fearful harmony nightmare too, but I was at my house, alone in the daylight but there was no PlayStation around, the TVs were off and I could hear it clearly.
You know, when I first seen that damaged/dirty disc variant, the jarring whoosh and creepy synth notes both scared me that anyone who've seen it could've get a heart attack.
The first time I had it happen to me, I shut off the system, ran downstairs and did not leave the kitchen for a solid hour out of fear.........and then I was perfectly fine after. XP
Icyndr I know this comment is 2 years old but dude just get a new ps1 it's not even expensive it's like 20 bucks at goodwill or anyother thrift store pawn shops or flea market
Primus03 I personally prefer playing ps1 games on a ps1 over playing it on a ps2 or ps3 idk why I just think the gameplay feels smoother and it looks better but that's my opinion
@@gameandstuff The one thing I love about this, and the gen after that one, is... they had creative ass anti-piracy measures. A simple message isn't enough to scare anyone, so we're gonna give them the shivers with SOUNDS.
This happens when you insert a damaged or dirty disc. The synthesized whoosh comes in more heavily, and the chime sound and five synth-flute notes are replaced with slightly different synth-flute note sequence that is higher-pitched (this is actually the same one single chime as normal, except sped up slightly).
The "whoosh" is not actually a whoosh. It is actually a reversed and slowed down sound of smashing glass. On the normal startup, part of the reverse glass sound will play, before the chimes kick in to warn the player that the disc has been identified. On Pfear, it plays the reverse glass sound in full.
Well it’s actually the same sequence, just different speeds. Same with the chimes at the beginning. Actually, all in all the PS1 only uses three sound files: the heavy synth bass, the woosh and the bell chimes…
Imagine you wake up at 3am, everyone's asleep, you finally have the chance to play on you ps1 again, you start it up, expecting to play some games, but instead, this pops up, and you sit in fear, not knowing what to do.
Damn, it's almost like one of those echoing death cries in a fighting game. When you consider what hearing this meant for a PS1, it makes _a lot_ of sense!

For everyone who is asking why would Sony do this, it's not Sony's fault. The PlayStation is not supposed to do this. Sony programmed an error handler which is similar to the PS2 RSOD, except 10x less creepier. So when you put in a bad disc (Windows XP, PS2 game, etc.) on a real unit, it will bring you to the RSOD of the time. If the unit is mod-chipped, it will instead bring you to Fearful Harmony. An emulator will do the same. EDIT: I am unsure exactly how PFear or the Harmony are triggered. I will do some research and correct the comment.
I owned PAL consoles all my life. Never in my lifetime have any of the PS1's I played on executed the Personified Fear error. Any time I inserted a bad disc or the reader just plain failed, it would simply lock up on the Sony logo or give me the "Insert CD" splash.
My mod-chipped PSone just displayed PLAYSTATION without PS logo and "licensed by X", but all sounds were played correctly. Virgin playstation just displayed "Please insert PlayStation format disc"
I find the startup errors to be rather calming, honestly. As easily scared of things as I am, the errors don’t bug me for some reason. I enjoy the sounds of Fearful Harmony and Personified Fear. I do admittedly find the Forbidden Image errors to be unsettling.
I partly agree with you. Forbidden Image does become unsettling, but PFear and Fearful Harmony tops it all off Edit: Forbidden Image is nothing compared to PF and FH
Imagine setting up four big speakers in the woods near a graveyard. You have personified fear sound ready at high volume and its midnight. Someone pulls up in the said graveyard to pay respects to their deceased loved one. And this harsh sound plays. I can imagine probably jumping real high, screaming and maybe shitting their pants. Frozen at what the hell was that sound. Not wanting to find out. They quickly run to their car for dear life and drive away. I don't feel comfortable doing this in real life as I feel it's too mean to do this prank in a graveyard. Where people grieve at their loss loved ones.
'Merica actually did that back in the 'Nam war Context: Vietnamese people believe that if the body of a deceased one is not buried properly, their soul will forever wander the earth as a ghost in pain and agony, crying out to god for forgiveness but people can do some ritual to free the soul.(or something like that) So, when the Vietnam war was going on, the US army tried using this as an advantage, they made extremely eerie and unsettling audio that would make the Vietcong soldiers hiding in bushes or underground tunnels come out so they could meet the dead person. This was named "Operation Wandering Soul", it worked by having a squad of soldiers (or helicopters) with loudspeakers playing this tape in areas where they believed secret Vietcong tunnel systems were located, and in some cases it did actually work, many Vietcong soldiers came out of their hiding spots because they thought that their dead friend was somewhere near, although in other cases, they knew it was a recording and fired at where the sound was coming from, however this in turn revealed their position and they could be easily neutralized. America stopped using the ghost tapes in the early 1970s since the overall success was quite mixed, and it was frightening the Vietnamese civilians they were liberating. You can look up Ghost Tape Number 10 if you want to hear the sound, be warned though it's kinda unsettling.
+mAGNUS wAKER So who exactly was this NostalgiaMadPspmad guy? After doing a lot of searching I can't even find anything about what he did, I can only assume he was the first person to name these errors?
It's amazing how many bizarre and creepy new mixtures you can get by glitching the reverberated sounds of a synth note, bell chimes and reversed breaking glass.
2. Personified Fear Unlike Fearful Harmony, but Personified Fear can be get on your ps1 console if you inserted a disc that corrupted or the bios is also corrupted or you might used a badly scratched/burned disc. The screen can be rare to get and easy what else more creepier!
I had a nightmare when i was at my home with my niece at night, she pulled out a Windows 7 computer, opened a browser and opened this, then the startup played, but at least 10 minutes after, Personified Fear played. I woke up screaming. I then slept again and had a beautiful dream.
One day in 2013 I always scared of personified fear in 2013 it was my first time watching this error on computer after this shows up Regan MacNeil shows up with a scream when I went to school on 2015 I said to my friend personified fear is a very scary error I said to him she was in it my friend watched the exact video I watched he said it was fake he was scared he was saying to me what did she looked like also said to my other friends he said she was blue & she has a Alien look I said she wasn't blue it was green 1 year later in 2016 when I saw the real personified fear I realized it was fake the face in it was fake I said it to my friend that was fake they put the face in it
That's probably a bodily reaction to the sound of glass breaking, your brain watering up your eyes to get rid of tiny glass particulates that... aren't even actually there.
Well, This is much more creepy than RSOD, because i used to play backup games on the PS2 so the RSOD was a normal thing, but this error never happen on my PS1, and I've played backup games on the PS1 too xD

Just discovered this by accident today. Popped in a ps2 cd and had a heart attack when after about a minute I just got this at full volume. Word of advice: never try to play harry potter and the chamber of secrets for ps2 on your ps1, worst mistake of my life
So let me get this straight, does 'Personified Fear' happen when you insert a pirated PlayStation disc or a corrupt disc into the PlayStation system? I've seen heard this many times years ago, scary as heck! But just like Game Freak, I guess the people at Sony didn't expect glitches...
+Stephen Doherty I have a PlayStation. I got it last Christmas. The Model Number on it is SCPH-7501 and it was manufactured in January of 1999. I think the early models of the PlayStation such as the ones from 1994 (Japan) and 1995 give you the error. I think they forgot to add in the "Please insert a PlayStation format disc" for the launch models. I am probably completely wrong though, so don't believe me 100%.
Did anybody notice in the original PS1 startup, when it gets to the 2nd screen the 1st thing you hear is a little bit of the personified fear So that means its just the 2nd start up that made this sound, not Sony
Yeah, actually the 2nd screen where the big 3d playstation model appears is broken on personified fear, it doesnt appear and the sound sequence is broken, that also provokes the big and scary wooosh that its supposed to be a little more silent
Yeah, encountering this as a seven year old kid trying to sneak in some Spyro gameplay after I was supposed to be in bed fucked me up to the point of verzephobia as an adult. Amazing how something so small could have such a big impact now.
Imagine, evening, you are still in second grade, and your mother bought you a console, she only allowed you to play for a certain time since it was a very expensive purchase, you decide to play and pass the time, the volume is at 100, the lights are off and you hear it
One day while I was playing a game on my N64, I accidentally bumped it with my foot, and the entire game froze and played an ear-piercing sound. I ran upstairs, terrified.
i like to imagine this as an advanced android, quasi-human, booting up to a corrupted configuration, coming back to life as an evil machine ready to shed blood.
I've attempted to get the Personified Fear screen and sound by using a dirty disc on numerous PSX variants. I can't remember which ones worked and which didn't, but I do know that this method does work with the SCPH-5502 variant.
Kids today will never know the fear of that bootup screen taking just a little too long to transition

I keep hearing this in my dreams lately and - I’m not even kidding - the other night I had sleep paralysis and heard this sound.
Your channel name perfectly fits this video.
The "Personified Fear" (2nd part) should be the startup sound of PS6!
What 1900’s consoles have very often: *creepy sound errors*
One day while I was playing a game on my N64, I accidentally bumped it with my foot, and the entire game froze and played an ear-piercing sound. I ran upstairs, terrified.
I had a nightmare about this sound yesterday when in the dream i was sitting in my chair and discovered this by accident.
If you set the pitch and speed x2 at 0:13 you get Fearful Harmony.
It’s not scary when you expect it but when it comes out of nowhere it’s like a Jumpscare
I remember I watched a video that had Exorcist in it
Great, now I can’t sleep.
Fun fact: Personified fear is actually from ps1 start up screen when you put cd game on but it louder
I had this exact screen several times and each time scared me to death. 😰
the fact that a sound like *that* can clearly be traced back to the sounds used in the PS1 bootup genuinely unsettles me
It Sounds like a Scraping of a Sword In a Reverb Hall!!!!
I also thought of that
Funfact: the whooshing sound is glass breaking in reverse, and if you speed up the entire audio, you can hear bits of Fearful Harmony after the whoosh
This makes me feel hollow inside
i like to imagine this as an advanced android, quasi-human, booting up to a corrupted configuration, coming back to life as an evil machine ready to shed blood.
It sounds beautiful
that sound is one of the ps1 bios
Got it in my reccomend after a couple years. This used to scare the shit out of me.
I've attempted to get the Personified Fear screen and sound by using a dirty disc on numerous PSX variants. I can't remember which ones worked and which didn't, but I do know that this method does work with the SCPH-5502 variant.
0:12 This error gives me a nightmare. "Phineas y Ferb"
Mooom, Phineas and Ferb got a personified fear from the PlayStation
Imagine if you are trapped in your room and the screen is black and then this sound
Lyrics:
(Distorted Bell Ring Jumpscare Sounds)
I def remembered this, it scared me but i got the playstation title without the logo
