  • hi everyone welcome to one highly requested video! this took an excessively long time to write, film, and edit and it's mostly because i procrastinated.
    i hope that this video answered some of the follow up questions i received after my college decisions video and offered some helpful advice. i should also mention that my high school tips and experiences are limited to an ~*~A M E R I C A N~*~ perspective. unfortunately, i'm not very familiar with the college application process outside of the united states :(

    Some people that had too much fun in high school,like going into parties and etc., told me to focus on school only and study hard. While on the other hand, people that studied and focus on high school a lot recommended me to make sure I have fun in high school. I guess what I can see from this is to never go beyond studying or partying too much in high school. Do a little bit of everything.

      From my understanding, you can take the PSAT first to gauge where you are and if you're ready for the SAT, or if you need more tutoring/study time. You can take the ACT in between if you want more practice. This is just what I've seen from others' videos though, so I would do more research.

Doing ec activities like soccer and volunteering and also a co founder of a charity organization with my friends, I’ve done marching band for 2 years and ensemble band for 2 but have A’s and B’s and want to have higher grades, especially want to do good on ACT/SAT

    • @dearestemi
      @dearestemi  Před 5 lety +3

      you seem to be on the right track already! A's and B's are super awesome and a few B's won't deter you from getting into great schools (maybe for ivies but ivy leagues are overrated imo). it's okay to have B's especially if you're involved in a lot of extracurriculars. if you want to raise those B's to A's i would encourage speaking to your teacher about your assignments and test scores. also, repetition is the best way to study and remember things (don't try to study for big tests in one night.) for ACTs and SATs, practice a lot! research some testing strategies and tricks. the material in the ACT and SAT are super broad so it's hard to study but if you practice a lot and nail the testing techniques, you'll do great!

    I feel your pain because I went through a serious anxiety disorder early in high school. I could have otherwise done really well but due to the "crisis" that unfolded during my treatment process my GPA dropped and I hardly did any extracurriculars. My stats were good (3.8 uw, 32 act, rigorous classes) but I had no padding like extracurriculars and so I decided not to apply to any of my reach schools (John's Hopkins was the goal before all of this happened) because I didn't want to crash in the same way I did in high school. Don't know if that was the "right" decision but now I'm at my state school and I'm thriving in a way I couldn't during high school so I'm happy with it now. Good for you for getting into so many amazing schools! Anyway sorry for the long comment, just felt like I could relate and there are probably a lot of us out there who dealt with mental illness and the resounding effects during high school 💕

    I also had a C in Chemistry, despite working really hard
    I also crushed the ACT vs the SAT and was admitted to Kenyon College
    My school also did not weigh the GPAs - which was ridiculously unfair
    I got into many of the colleges where I applied, but not my first choice, which was Middlebury
    Never studied that hard in college and got mostly Bs. As an adult returned for some certificates and for a year of grad school. Achieved almost a 4.0
    I never felt motivated to work in high school because I did not like my school or the way it was run.

    • @miadonahue7117
      @miadonahue7117 Před 5 lety +1

      I can answer! I had an IEP plan for my mental health and it meant that I dropped classes that weren't graduation requirements during my senior year, so my guidance counselor explained why in her recommendation letter. I was really scared that I'd be seen as a liability if I mentioned it, but I got into the school I wanted! I think it helps if you frame it as "I've been going through this, but I'm doing well now/working towards my goals".
      I was required to mention it in my application, though, because I was hospitalized a lot in high school and I had to disclose my medical records.

    Is Ib Sl Psych worth it, will it add too much work if I'm taking 4 hl classes?

    • @mrmc50
      @mrmc50 Před 5 lety +2

      My older sister took 4 HL classes and according to her, there is definitely a difference in the amount of coursework you are assigned to compared to SL classes. For her, the arts and music was her main focus so she didn't have a choice since our school only offered HL for arts and music. A tip you might wanna know is that if you do well on your IB HL exams, you are actually receiving credit for college (the amount of credit depends on what college/university you're attending). SL doesn't provide that, unlike HL. Credit is a huge deal and can save you lots of time and money. Admissions wise, officers are looking for rigorous classes in your transcript so taking an extra HL class can definitely help you stand out. If you're determined to succeed and feel like you can take on another HL class then, of course, try it! I hope this helps you. Don't hesitate to comment if you have questions that might come up.

    • @dearestemi
      @dearestemi  Před 5 lety

      there are a few things to consider. first, it depends on how much you're studying for your HL classes. for me, i had to study a lot for IB Psych SL because it requires knowing details about very specific studies by heart. i hardly studied for English HL and History HL because those classes were easier for me (and I also wasn't taking the history exam), so i had the time and energy to take psych. however, what made Psych SL easier to study for was all the resources available online about what IB expects you to know on the exam.
      i assume you're not pursuing an IB diploma if an SL class is optional for you, so if you feel like you have enough time to take an SL class, go ahead! it's definitely less work than an HL class and psych was really fun.
      also, keep in mind that some colleges don't consider SLs for credit. if you're taking IB classes with the intention of getting college credit, it might not be worth it. BUT IB courses are still very challenging and that looks good on a transcript, so it gives you a leg up on your applications.

    Going into junior year in hs now, any tips? Doing ec activities like soccer and volunteering and also a co founder of a charity organization with my friends, I’ve done marching band for 2 years and ensemble band for 2 but have A’s and B’s and want to have higher grades, especially want to do good on ACT/SAT

      @chlloeeeee Před 5 lety

      Urcinnamonbüns YT hii just a tip is that colleges like to see consistency, so if you are doing ec activities, try to stick with them until you graduate! Also many public colleges mostly only look at GPA and SAT/ACT scores, so make sure to practice so you’re familiar with the types of questions they give you!

      In the US, they're the same. In canada, university is a 4 year program and college is a 2 year, more technical/trade school program.

      if you mean high school, don't worry about it! you'll take classes necessary for your major and career goals when you get to college. in high school, you're just focused on fulfilling your graduation requirements and college applications (if college is what you're aiming for because taking a gap year or doing apprenticeships are options too.)
