  • Juan Diego Flórez as Count Almaviva in Act I of Gioachino Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville).
    Find out more at www.roh.org.uk/...
    The 23-year-old Gioachino Rossini completed his masterpiece Il barbiere di Siviglia incredibly quickly - legend has it in just 13 days - which Rossini attributed to ‘facility and lots of instinct’. He drew on Pierre-Augustin Beaumarchais’ play Le Barbier de Seville - part of a dramatic trilogy that also inspired Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. The opera is characterized by youthful energy and bold wit: qualities brought to the fore in Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier’s colourful production.
    Il barbiere di Siviglia has all the ingredients for comic chaos: an imprisoned young woman, her lecherous guardian and a young noble suitor. Skilfully plotting behind the scenes is Figaro - an irrepressible and inventive character in whom many have seen a resemblance to the young Rossini himself. The score fizzes with musical brilliance, from Figaro’s famous entrance aria ‘Largo al factotum’ to the frenzy of the Act I finale, when the five principal voices pile on top of each other. Within a few decades of its 1816 premiere, Il barbiere di Siviglia had been toured round the world, reaching opera houses in New York, Buenos Aires, Trinidad and Ecuador. It has remained one of the most prominent and popular operas in the repertory.

      Nowhere near how a bel canto tenor should sound. Very forced, too loud, and out of tune so often. I actually squinted half the time because of his poor intonation. Nothing new for Florez though. Here is a recording of the way this aria should sound:

    Once you listen to the greats, like Kraus, Jadlowker, Schipa, and more, you just can't stand with the fundamentally badly produced tone of JDF's voice, a cercenated, shrill sound, that apparents fullness, but that is insubstantial

      @2Musicmundo Před rokem +3

      JDF es uno de los pocos tenores modernos sobresalientes de la actualidad. Antiguamente existían otras pedagogías del canto, las cuales tenían sus ventajas y desventajas. Cantar con una «respiración más alta» ayuda mucho en las coloraturas. Si te digo que Schipa no me llega igual que Florez, que su canto es plano, carente de agudos y coloraturas no tan precisas, menor agilidad vocal, nasalidad, probablemente querrás argumentar otra cosa, lo cual me da a entender tal subjetividad. No quiero decir que Schipa fue un mal tenor, solo trato de ponerlo en las mismas condiciones para exponer la subjetividad de la situación. Schipa fue un sólido tenor. JDF lo ha hecho muy bien, y en su etapa de brillo y plenitud dejó increíbles presentaciones. Yo suelo ser crítico de Flórez cuando hace papeles pesados que no son para su voz, pero en Rossini... en Rossini fue simplemente el mejor: coloraturas prácticamente perfectas, afinación, interpretación, actuación, seguridad, ataque para los agudos, etc... Si se va a criticar que se haga desde la razón y no de los apasionamientos y fanatismo por el tradicionalismo operístico. El hecho de no sonar como Kraus o Schippa, no te convierte en un mal tenor. Flórez es un tenor moderno, con una técnica moderna y adecuada para su voz en el repertorio ligero.
