  • Democracy and the rule of law in Western societies are under threat due to Vladimir Putin’s efforts to destabilize neighboring governments and to stir up dissent in countries from France to the United States. Timothy Snyder, professor of history at Yale, states just this in his latest book The Road to Unfreedom. At the invitation of De Balie and The John Adams Institute Snyder is returning to Amsterdam to discuss his new book and show us how anti-democratic forces have become a major threat to democracy. And also shows us a way out. After his speech Snyder will engage in conversation with moderator Eelco Bosch van Rosenthal (Nieuwsuur).
In The Road to Unfreedom Snyder talks about anti-democratic forces after the Cold War, how Russia fell into Putinism and how this has become a global threat to democracy. The renowned historian Yuval Noah Harari calls it “a brilliant and disturbing analysis, which should be read by anyone wishing to understand the political crisis currently engulfing the world”.

    N E D E R L A N D S :
Yuval Noah Harari, noemde het boek ““a brilliant and disturbing analysis, which should be read by anyone wishing to understand the political crisis currently engulfing the world”.

Snyder is so ahead of his time in his analyse of current political developments, it's just phenomenally accurate and unfortunately very frightening to see how easily whole countries can be manipulated online through bot based social media mass spreading.

I am benefitting greatly from watching such videos as the above. Many times I watch a video twice; many times at 75% speed. Partly I watch for the content and partly I watch for how the content is analyzed and presented. Once I have built a model in my head, I go faster. Going fast comes with experience and skill. Also it is the Human with who I connect, albeit one sided through watching and projection.

1:12:42 Very important question, about factors other than Russia in the 2016 election. However, it wasn't really answered. I recommend the talks and writings of Thomas Frank and Mark Blyth to provide those answers. Of course, earlier in the session, Timothy showed full understanding of wealth and income inequality and the other deficiencies of the American system. 1:36:41 "Video is awful" : excellent point about the low ratio of information content to time spent (let alone gigabytes received ;-) watching video and TV. Also video is ephemeral, although I think audio should last longer (and the information content is nearly entirely in the audio track).

Watching in 2021. Wonder how mr. Snyder would apply that thinking to president Biden’s policies…

  • @gerardogarciacabrero7650

In a rather pedantic comment of mine below I was trying to say two things: that same Profr. Snyder's Alma Mater youtube video for this conference had supressed the comments interface (for me something unfaithful of this "large trend" [in his own words in other DeBalie conference] of uploading videos and comments); and, that the shortcomings of the tool (just try to browse hundreds or thounsands of comments) should or might be overcome in a cooperative good will environment.
Not withstanding the implied criticism of the majestic attitude of uploading and making the comments available and not being able to descend to the level of the commentators.
PS that congratulates DeBalie for their productions but that declares the improbability of even browsing a tiny part of it.
PS that expects the greatest of a comments interface tangible results

Democracy relies on citizens defining what it really means. Please think for yourself as much as possible and share your ideas. Broadly and technically democracy is rule by the people. Greek root 'demos' means people, any 'cracy' means rule by.

Snyder hasn't even spoken and we have had almost 8 minutes of scene setting and water muddying. I'm genuinely concerned that the intellectual elite of the West have given over their powers of reason and objectivity to this "Cult of Progress" Locked in their own bubbles of hyperreality, only able relate to others as abstract groups to be played off against each other.
The man making the introductions speaks of beliefs and predictions in religious terms as if Tim Snyder is some Nostrodamus like sage.
Snyder frames his fellow citizens as ignorant and without agency, paints his President as Putins marionette, and resistance against Neo-Liberalism as Fascism.
    It continues....
