Big Wreck might be the most underrated Rock band of all time.
âŠand everyone who doesn't know this IS the problem.
ya and canada keeps pumping these great musicians and no one knows about i remember when no one knew who rush was or wide mouth mason ,,, and now thornley/big wreck ,, and it goes on and on ,for yjr population Canada puts out the best musicians in the world no jokes its the water
Town Heroes, Matt Mays, Motorleague, Glorious Sons, Northcote, Half Moon Run, and many others!
marcorock101 and Matthew good, the tea party, list goes on and on. atleast we can throughly enjoy
I bought their first album on a whim after hearing the oaf. Their second album I was excited for. Now, 15 years later, I still get big wreck songs stuck in my head and I still jam that shit occasionally.
How is it possible to be all of
- A phenomenal guitarist
- A phenomenal songwriter
- A phenomenal singer
It doesn't happen often.
Rare indeed!

And from Canada âŠ.
Just watched this again. Every year or so since this was posted I go watch it again for inspiration. Ian Thornley is an amazing talent and a wonderful guitar player. I could just sit and watch this man play solo for hours.
Same here
Same here
I've loved him since growing up in the 90's, very underrated
Nobody should put Ian Thornley's amp on standby except for him. Absolutely phenomenal playing.
@@alan98296 so he has some sort or control over the situation.
@@sean7193 Ian was pretty respectful during the convo... it's not like he was noodling while they were talking.
ALOTTA people talk about tone, some people have really good tone-then, this guy walks into the studio & says: I have an ideađŻïž BIGGER GUITARzđ§
That was driving me nuts. Stop turning him off.
In my top 5 guitar players is Ian T. Heâs so awesome. Ty Tabor, Page, Stevie, Ian, Beck
Big wreck needs to blow up worldwide, they are incredible!
Ian Thornley is right in there with the best guitarists of today. Highly underrated player, as is Big Wreck as a band.

Thatâs what it is when your from Canada if he was from California would be huge
Ian and Richie Kotzen.. Two Top Talents that donât get enough recognition âźïž đŻđž glad Ian isnât a sellout âđŒ
I would love love love to see those two do an album and tour together. How could it not be amazing.
I saw big wreck at the commodore ballroom in Vancouver like ten years ago and it was one of the best shows sound wise Iâve ever seen/heard. Really good!
Still is the best tone Iâve heard on any of the Anderton videos. Ian is phenomenal.
@15:28 "This Hamilton Ontario Canada warble of the neck" is so spot on. Is there anyone better at this than the Hammer's own Colin Cripps?? Great interview. Paid full respect to Ian's talent, and man... wouldn't you love to sit across from him??
Ian is a special kinda guy it's very rare.u get the voice and guitar skills all in one package the guys a legend
Man, i wish this video was about 18 years long
Lol
Big time
haha thatd be great
big wreck time
:-D :-D :-D
I just loop it . lol
I absolutely love how Ian refused to lay down his axe, even though it meant passing on Velvet Revolver. That's love for one's craft, and art!
Mucho Artistic Integrity
I love at the end when Captain says Ian even plays slide, when hes one of the best slide players youll ever hear
And then he sings like a mofo on top of all of that. He's fantastic.
i donât know about one of the best, heâs very very good but . . .check out derek trucks, thatâs how good slide can sound
@@geddesj89 hes one of the rare few guys who sounds like trucks. Especially live.
@@geddesj89 easily one of the best
Every few months I come back and watch this video. Then I want to go play the guitar. Then I want to quit playing the guitar.
Absolutely
Same
never quit!
Yes me too
Dude....Nailed.
Makes me proud to say Iâm a Canadian. What a great talent!
Ian's pull up bends almost leave the fret board and they howl. His vibrato is incredible. You can say it's the expensive equipment, no it's not. I've seen a Stevie Ray song performed on a Cars movie Walmart guitar and it sounded insane. He's looking for beautiful melody's while most are chasing his. Incredible player and Big Wreck needs more recognition.

I have spent the entire video watching his bends like WHAAAAAAT
Vibrato takes long time to develop. Suhr guitars are not cheap.
Ian thornley is a monster guitar player !!!! Really good !!! Love Big wreck !!
This guy is insanely good!
I keep coming back to this video. I had the pleasure of meeting Ian about 7 years ago and it's clear to me he is a really nice guy.
"The biggest ego in the room Has to be the SONG"
Well said young Jedi ! Cheers
Ian Thornley is a very overlooked/underrated player. The Thornley album is just a rockin album by itself. Big wreck is freakin awesome too.
Met Big Wreck in the 90's great guys and very solid performance... I mean tight and solid; you could really feel these guys were to be together. Much respect.
I've been a fan of Ian's since their first record. They should be one of the biggest bands out there!!!
The clean bit at around 34:00 is simply gorgeous...and he's just noodling. Brilliant.
Hell yes. It's beautiful.
What do you say? Yeah, it's Lunch Time. Fantastic video Lee- it's a long one. For those watching- stay with it, the last 10 minutes are just amazing. How have I not heard of this band? What a guitar player- tone is phenomenal and so melodic. I used to just watch these videos for gear info- thanks for the introduction to a band I had never heard of. I'm buying this guys records!
Love to see him get some recognition. Been a fan since their first album.
Me too. The Oaf and That Song were my introductions to my favorite band. Under The Lighthouse and Blown Wide Open kept me around all these years.
Saw Big Wreck play in Toronto around 1998, small club, first album i believe. Ian Thornley was playing with a broken right hand and still managed to sound amazing. He is truly a guitar God. More people need to discover this guy.

Guys a national treasure to music I feel like him and Chris Cornell are deep
Down connected two epic voices like no other and even though they have different lyrical styles both have resonated in different ways a lot of pain and self worth stuff and itâs inspiring and sad at the same time. My brother had the privilege of meeting Ian at a pub after hours for some extra jamming and I was so jealous lol keep on rockin man you are a gift and itâs an honour to be a fan.
2022 and still only 243k views. Watched these guys live last weekend (July ) and they still kill it every time.
Without a doubt one of the best guitarists I've ever heard.
I'm Australian, but was working in Toronto in about 2014 when I heard Big Wreck's "Albatross" on the radio. Instant fan. By total dumb luck they played an outdoor concert & i went along. One of the best concerts I've seen, & I've seen many. Great player. Great, great singer. Guitar players will love his records. I can't understand why he isn't much better known.

Big Wreck is amazing, such a tight band, which merits a close listen. I do not know why this band is not well known outside of Canada. I hope they break big soon. Thanks to Andertons for featuring them.
Ian always has great tone, making Canada proud.
The more I listen to Big Wreck the more I think I'm actually more impressed with his singing. He has an unbelievable rock voice. Super impressive musician. I started listening to their albums about six months ago and I just keep playing them over and over.
This is my first encounter with this player. Certainly not the last!
Ian Thornley!!! Big Wreck!
Great player, great interview. So nice to listen to players this great and such a luxury to have them break things down like this. Big wreck rules, they have the perfect marriage of technicality and sonic musicality with their stuff. Rest In Peace Brian Doherty, your work is eternal.
Killer guitarist and sweet human being from one of the best rock bands on the Earth... very cool interview, Captain!
A fine Canadian boy!
My yearly check in. Still awesome. See you all next time
Ian and Big Wreck are incredibly talented, massively under rated and should be headlining arena tours and selling them out world wide.
Canada's best kept secret! Ian and Big Wreck are amazing. A very creative, passionate, player with chops o' plenty, but it's the feel and tone exploration that make him who he is. He was invited and jammed with Velvet Revolver and could have ended up being their frontman. Imagine Ian's voice with Velvet Revolver! Wow! However, having two great guitarist, and one of who is legendary, it just wouldn't have worked.
R.I.P. Brian Doherty of Big Wreck (June 5/19)
Always liked Big Wreck. Never really had any idea what an insane guitar player Ian Thornley is. Wow!
Big Wreck have had mainstream success in Canada since the 90s. The first two albums have a bunch of singles that are still played on the radio regularly. The Oaf & Under the Lighthouse are classics.
Glad they're getting more international attention, shouldn't have taken this long.
been a fan since the late 90's, here in US, :):) love these guys! and the Thornley stuff!!
Canât forget âthat songâ
When I lived in buffalo, I heard a BUNCH of their stuff on 97.7 htz fm. Good shit
No kidding. I live in a town in Michigan that's literally just across the river from Canada and pretty much grew up with Canadian rock stations. I've known Big Wreck's hits for years now.
According to Wikipedia, "That Song" was the song most played on Canadian radio from 1995 - 2016. Wow... it's a pity that my career took me outside of Canada: I missed Big Wreck completely. Now, I'm playing catch up. Ian is a killer musician, man...
I canât think of a guitarist who has the notes under their fingers quite like Ian these days... crazy great player! Modest player, amazing to listen to and a pleasure to watch the man play. My favourite guitarist these days. \m/ cheers

betbuk done! Thanks! Cheers
Kotzen is similar.
Ozzy Smith kotzen is a smokin player and singer as well but too bad he lacks the talent to write like Mr. Thornley.
Itâs a gift, and you either got it or you donât. :)
Agree - kotzen is amazing, Ian is special- I have a lot of bro love for the guys playing- really I don't there is anyone out there than make it 'talk' like Ian,
Ian can make a guitar, sing, cry, wail, weep, howl and scream all in the span of a 2 minute improvised solo.... might just be one of the best out there, i can't get enough... and watch the delight he gets when nailing a note or harmonic. Passion and soul just ooze from his playing.... blown away
macleanclassics ew why do u gotta say "ooze"
Lucky to say I saw them in a club and met each and every member of the band. Ian was so nice and humble and even asked me if they sounded OK! And yes the sounded amazing!
Under the lighthouse is one of my favorite songs of all time Thornley is a beast
ian is a massive talent, plays like Eddie van Halen and sings like Chris Cornell
For real, he's a more talented Chris Cornell (with all due respect) that doesn't get a fraction of the recognition. Even look similar lol
I've just realized Big Wreck exists through a Rick Beato interview...and, with all due respect, I guess if everyone says this band is so underrated its because they are a little bit too eclectic in my opinion...is this prog grunge with hints of country? Very good musicians for sure, but I dont like my mexican food to be non spicy AND influenced by french cuisine
@cristobalholmgren7497 why are you commenting on here? I'm promoting a band I like if you don't like them don't listen, good grief man đ
One of the best freakin guitarists and song writer more people should know about. I've been listening the whole time Ian. thank you.
....I mean... Come on. Nevermind the amazing technique.. THE TONE! THE MELODY!
YEEESSSS !!!
My favourite guitarist, my favourite male vocalist !
possibly one of the best guitar players of the the last 20 yrs. big wreck has so many awesome songs.
Big Wreck are a superb band, 'Pleasure and the Greed' was one of my favourite albums from the 90's and Ian is an incredible vocalist, and clearly a very accomplished guitarist.
Fortunate to see a show last evening with Big Wreck opening for Our Lady Peace. Felt like the Yankees handing the stage over to the Springfield Elementary t-ball team. OLP wrote a few good tunes ... but man ... BW has gotten better, stronger, tighter, faster. The Steve Austin of bands these days. Incredible to see Paulo rejoin the party for the show. Thornley was simply magnificent. Not sure they've sounded this good. Ever. If you get the chance to catch them, don't miss it. They really have distanced themselves from the pack and, referencing The Captain, not sure why they're not amongst the biggest in the world ....inarguably amongst the best however.
Lee, this interview should be in line for some award it was so cool and a pretty amazing listening to his guitar playing. Capn, you really asked the right questions and led the interview in the right directions... Great!
A big +1 to getting a UK tour for Big Wreck. Ghosts has not left the CD player in my car for 6 months. Thanks for another brilliant interview, Cap!
If it were possible to give this two thumbs up I would. I discovered Big Wreck earlier this year and I agree, it's criminal that they are not more widely known and recognized as an awesome band. It was a treat and a joy to hear Ian play and talk. Excellent job Captain!!!
He is the Most underrated musician going, what a cool guy too! Been a fan since 2004.
Cannot believe I just found this. Discovered Big Wreck while working in Canada in 1997 and coming home it felt like this secret band nobody else knew. Ian has been so influential to my playing and songwriting. Cant believe he was in the UK! I hear he may be on Beatos channel at some point?
incredible playing! cant believe i had never heard of Ian before!
We need another captain and ian interview!!
How have I never heard of Big Wreck until this week. Holy Cow! What great music!!
So MUCH to discover! Have you heard their latest!

Still loving this video almost 8 years later!
Big Wreck gets loads of radio play in Canada, one of our best bands truly!!! Ian is my favorite guitar player and one of the top 10 in the world, his voice is incredible too. Check out the song Under The Lighthouse, my favorite solo ever. I'd love for these guys to get more popular, they deserve it. It's a different sounds but check out The Trews, also from Canada, also completely underappreciated worldwide!
Super happy to see Ian getting the recognition he deserves, truly one of the best guitarists of this generation.
Cap: "what's that thing your playing its amazing?!" ... Ian: "Its called B Major"
Mark Pappas lol
!
Ian is AMAZING!

Brilliant video!!!!! We here in the great white north know all about Ian Thornley and we are glad to see other taking notice. not only is he a master in guitar playing but also a songwriter. His thornley cds are also fantastic. Albatross is a true masterpiece.
"thats okay....n....Im alright!!!!!" :)
I've been a fan since the beginning. What an artist.
I can't believe this was eight years ago. I've probably seen it five times by now.
Just discovered this guy a few weeks back. Phenomenal tone! and yes, I feel like taking a hammer to that "Captain" dude's hand for playing Hall Monitor with the amp.
Absolutely incredible singer, guitarist..beautiful and fantastic songs..what gets me is he can put this all together live too..Ian Thornley and Big Wreck ROK
I always knew Ian Thornley was a monster guitar player, but I didn't know he was a goddamn shredder! Sweet video, and interview, Cap. Glad I watched the whole thing.
I think the Pleasure and the Greed is a highly underrated record. It's definitely one of my favorites.
God this bloke is awesome.....Nice one Captain for bringing this band into my life!!!!

@@betbuk in a heart beat đ€
I saw him with his side project Thornley a while ago. They were opening for another band and I remember being blown away by his showmanship and his playing. He's badass!
Terrific interview. Ian's the guitar player's guitar player, an amazing singer, and an all-round nice guy. Really glad this wasn't edited down to 15 minutes or anything.
The Captain truly seems to be in awe in this one
Here I am, 5 years later watching this masterpiece again. He's like a heavier version of Andy Timmons to me, who was also inspired by Eric Johnson. Just absolutely fantastic and tasteful playing. Tone is 10/10 too.
GOOD GRIEF !!
What an awesome guitarist. Shredders take note !
Its about the story you tell, as BB King said, not the licks.
Listen from 39:08. It goes round in a complete circle. It has a purpose.
Yes its fast and technically brilliant, but it has a structure, like a poem, laid out with a story.
I had tears in my eyes.
I loved Lees face 40:45. Absolute wonderment ! (as was I)
And the 3 bends 40:54 ...oh my f*** Lord ! .....I disappeared, leaving my clothes in a pile.
Great Video Lee.
This tone goes hand in hand with Ians style. Amazing...
never gets old listening to that dude play!!!!
Really cool to see Big Wreck getting some more exposure here!
Man...I'm speechless...never heard of him before...
What an amazing sound!!!
You know when you are in the presence of a phenomenal, unique musician when the EXAMPLES are incredible.
Loooooove Ian Thornley. He's also an amazing singer.
underrated and under appreciated for his ability... Albatross is an epic album... Check out "Wolves", an amazing song. Another great Andertons video... Thanks guys!!
brilliant! those were the best guitar tones i've heard in ages. what an amazing musician Ian is, thank you for that video, great stuff.
A truly gifted man, thanks for the extended play time!
he is the best guitar player in the world right now. pound for pound. put him up against anyone.
When I saw this in my subscription list I thought 45 mins ? That's a long one for someone I've never heard of.... I've just sat through it and wish there was more. Superb Capt, simply superb.
Just saw these guys at the Sinclair in Boston, MA. What an incredible performance!
Matthew Cuthbert seeing them tonight in Moncton N.B !!!!!
I was there with you and it was mind blowing to know that Ian had a cold. Good lord, the whole band was amazing.
I don't know why Thornley isn't better known, such a good player with great tone and a great vocalist.
I managed to miss this first time around. Just watched all of it having never heard of Ian or Big Wreck. So I finish the video and like Lee says go and watch Ghosts. I watched the live at the Suhr factory version. Fuck me, how are they not massive? Awesome musicians and what a voice! I haven't have a band blow me away like that for many, many years.
This is the best interview with an established rock musician ever.
I can't believe more people don't know about Big Wreck and Thornley. Some of my favorite guitar records. Fantastic songwriting. Cornell-like vocals. What's not to love?
Hi Lee! being Canadian, Ian Thornley has been a staple of Canadian music for many years, a fantastic player for sure! The very 1st time I saw Big Wreck was back in 1996 just 1 year prior to "In Loving Memory Of.." came out, Big Wreck (and you can tell Chappers this) opened for Joe Satriani, and being a huge Satch fan myself was blown away and humbled by Ian's incredible guitar tones... so much so that he became my new idol on guitar that very night, Joe was of course great as well, but I kept saying to myself Ian will go far in music, maybe not mainstream but a true guitar player's guitar player! Top Notch for sure. the cream of the Canadian crop most absolutely!
Cheers!
Would love to see Ian live. You're a lucky guy.
Hey I just have to be one of the other hundreds of people to say thanks for turning me on to this band. Can't believe I hadn't ever heard them, just fantastic music! Thanks Captain, sincerely.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUU!!! I have no words to express my gratitude for this wonderful interview! Ian, Big Wreck and the Captain ruleeeee!!!
Still come back to watch this 5 years later. What a player.
