  • After only crumbs of news consisting mostly of casting reveals or production shakeups, actual footage of the new Dune spinoff prequel series entitled Dune: Prophecy set to air on the HBO Max streaming service was finally revealed when the first trailer was dropped online. This is the first time fans and prospective audiences have an idea of what they can expect from this Bene Gesserit focused show. An explanation of what we know about Dune: Prophecy, and a breakdown of what was revealed in the trailer and discussion my hopes and concerns for this series.

The trilogy Sisterhood/Mentats/Navigators tells the story of how the bene geserits learn how to fight, how to use voice and how they get other memory among other things. It has the potential to answer many questions fans have about the sisterhood. The story has a lot of potential…. If it passes the ghom jabbar test

Brian's work is pretty much fan fiction compared to his father's work but if they've taken the general starting point from him but have gone in a better direction I'm hopeful it can improve on his novels.

...and she's not off target saying that. Brian Herbert & Kevin J Anderson are not amateurs. Brian (and family?) own the property so he can do what he wants and I think in general he seeks to honor and expand his father's work. That being said, the BHerbert/KJAnderson works have gone off the rails more than once in the Dune saga with storylines and major plot points that are far afield from Frank Herbert's work.
Personally I hope the series kicks ass like the trailer does. As others've already said -- we have to wait and see. I hope the showrunner does excellent work with this property. We all know a showrunner can make a series sing or can fvck it up. I hope for the former.

what worries me is that they will give in to their standard of 'strong woman' by making the Sisters use what someone else in another vid comments section call 'Hard Power'
the Sisterhood uses 'Soft Power' the manipulating of bloodlines, marriages and persons. while the Males (the Landsraad and so on) use 'Hard Power' which is violence, arms and war.
Most modern shows with modern women fall back on Hard Power because the writers don't seem to be able to write a woman using Soft Power anymore. (if some of them ever knew how to do it, like Frank knew how to)
it's fine to make them all 'girl boss' but, they need to do it by making them Sisterhood versions.
Softly people. We were willing to wait 90 generations for Him, throwing a tantrum and acting like men do, will not work. You do not let them glimpse the Bene Gesserit Fist inside the glove, unless there is great need.

In the books there was a clear distinction between feminine and masculine power, and the way it was utilized. Women (personified in the Bene Gesserit) wielded Soft Power - influence, manipulation and secrets, entirely through interpersonal relationships. Men (personified in the Landsraad, Mentats and the Spacing Guild) wielded Hard Power - physical force, mastery of weapons and technology, harnessed for the purpose of restrained and unrestrained violence. Neither was necessarily 'superior' to the other, because either one used without the other to back it up would be ineffective, especially in the long run.
Meaning that there is AMPLE space for Hollyweird to do the whole Girlboss thing to their heart's content, and it will be both plausible and compelling - BUT ONLY IF they don't also succumb to the weak, lazy agenda-mongering of making the men all look like gormless sheep, led along by their noses by feminist power-fantasy tropes.
      Guess we'll see.

As long as they don't have sisters shooting beams from their eyes or fingers, it actually looks watchable. Their wanting power up front and centre, could serve as a lesson for the future. Better to stay in the shadows.
Not being a fan of Brian and Kevin's books, hopefully they also use some source material from the Dune Encyclopedia which Frank Herbert actually endorsed as well as from Heretics and Chapterhouse which are almost exclusively about the Bene Gesserit.

It's hard to tell much of anything about the quality of the show from the teaser apart from the costume and set design looks fairly decent from what we saw. Emma Watson, Olivia Williams and Mark Strong are all very good actresses and actors when they've got good material to work with. A full trailer should be a better test of whether the writing and general plot is up to a high enough standard. But after the teaser I'll still give it a fair go when it gets released. After all the upheaval of the first show runner leaving and Shirley Henderson dropping out it's had a troubled birth but so have lots of shows that have gone on to be terrific.

With Javicco as Emperor and Valya looking much older than she is at the end of the "Schools" trilogy, I'm wondering if Vorian would still be alive. Nothing is mentioned of his fate by the end of the final book in the trilogy "Navigators of Dune" after his fight with Valya on Corrin, other than him escaping and he published his 3 memoirs sometime after that. He's about 220-225 years old by the time of the duel with Valya. The books then jump to the "Prelude to Dune" series about 10,000 years later set just prior to the events of Franks original Dune.
In typical Harkonnen fashion, Valya becomes Mother Superior after the death of the founder of the sisterhood by deceit and treachery. Raqulla Bertil-Anirul is the founder of the sisterhood on Rossak - ironically an Atriedes and daughter of Vorian although whilst not a secret no one knows this - and the first and for many years the only to survive the ingesting of poison to achieve the "change".
There's been argument for years amongst fans as to whether or not the books written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson are actually canon. I take the view of no, they're not, but can be fun reads but don't expect prose on the level of Franks original books. They do contradict a lot of things in Frank's original books but they do give context, particularly the "Legends" trilogy which makes for interesting reading if you want to know more about the Butlerian Jihad and the origins of the Harkonnens, Atreides and Corrinos (previously Butler) as well as setting the groundwork for the origins of the Fremen, Sisterhood, Navigators and Mentats and the subsequent "Schools" trilogy. The "Prelude to Dune" trilogy annoyed me for its canon breaking, particularly the entire Ixian arc as well as Dr Yeuh's origin. Making the "enemy" in "Hunters/Sandworms" that the scattering is fleeing from who they did (no spoilers), was a cop-out for me, but does come full circle if you've read the "Legends" trilogy.
For me it's a shame they didn't start with "Legends" but epic space battles are expensive to make for the screen. I'm cautiously optimistic for "Prophecy", but time will tell. With no source material to reference the writers of the series could go completely off the rails.

To be honest, I have my doubts. Sisterhood is probably a bit too much psychological and less action for possible new fans, but will suit the Base, becaue they accept enything Dune. I wonder that if Prophecies will be a succes, they will go on with Mentats and Navigators, though both will also not be that actionpacked SF people like. However, there could be a way out. The Harkonnen sisters have a sidegoal in Siterhood: Vorian Atreides and in my opinion his life would be a much better way to explain much of the early Dune universe, starting with the Titans, then the Machines, the Machine wars, Butler, Sisterhood. Thats a storyline for many seasons and I like the character of Vorian, but thats personal 🙂

Making the origin of the Bene Gesserit be Harkonens sort of strikes me as lazy (Brian). If their goal is (taken from the Dune Wiki) is: "The primary objective of the Bene Gesserit was to attain further power and influence and help to direct humanity along a path of insight and stability.", then cross mixing it with Harkonnen ambition at the beginning seems wrong.

Kevin J Anderson is bad enough, but this sounds like it will feed into all of Hollywood's worst impulses. One of the great ironies is that in their desperation for female empowerment, Hollywood has lost their ability to write women, and the more female centric a story is, the worse the writing will be. Rings of Power is bad enough with one Galadriel, now imagine a show where every nonvillainous character has to be a Galadriel (and the "cooler" villains too). And I have no problem just ignoring the show, but now I fear the Kevin J Anderson interquels will become canon for an adaptation of Messiah.

Agree that there are other areas of the Dune Universe that are in greater need of development. But I understand why they selected this path. And I don’t agree with it. Luckily, I don’t watch TV anymore.

Another great video Nerd Cookies! 🙏
I have read the six(6) novels and with each one, I dislike the Bene Gesserit a little more; I was glad to see the God Emperor giving them a short leash! All the misery in that universe has been brought by the Bene Gesserit. That universe would most likely have been better off if that order of women never existed. 🤔
They want to control everything and look at everyone outside the Bene Gesserit as if they were cockroaches with a few exceptions. 🤦‍♂
Not sure I will bother checking a series about ONLY them.

Lots of people are like HUH? This should help to explain the world at the time of Dune. The 1st Dune movie ( way back when) was a dismal failure because if you didn't read the books 1st, you couldn't follow it.

I hope they can bring it off with the dignity of F. Herbert's writing and not like the GOT books which seemed to me like a smutty, low brow copy of LOTR. IDK, Brian's books are like a small tactical exercise during war, while his father was a master strategist, as if Sun Tzu was behind the writing. I love big concepts, epochal movements. I tried Brian's books, but the constant grind into minutiae made me drop them. I'll see it anyway of course lol.

Iam not excited about what seems to be a female centric dune series. The bene gesserit only mildly interest me as a one of many factions in the duniverse but on its own, na thanks. The machine wars, titans, omnius, butlerian jihad would make for a far more interesting prequel series, imo ofc.

Not sure I entirely agree that women are always the villains in the Dune universe. At Frank Herbert's best very few characters were purely villainous apart from the Harkonnens. The Bene Gesserit themselves could be both villain and heroic at the same time. Very little in Dune was as clearly defined completely black or white which is why I think its legacy has lasted so long.

Having just sat through the dumpster fire called Fallout (series), I honestly feel, this is going to be even worse. Somehow. Even some fans of Dune can find the BG difficult to understand, and while Dune is a well-known IP, the BG are hardly a houseold word outside the fan base. So...who is the show meant for? Lets be up front here, they are not going to get either the universe, or society of Dune correct in broad strokes, or the BG themselves. We can see this already. Everyone in the Duniverse you see, will either be an Atredies, or a Harkonen.

    • @brotherjohnnyxXxX
      @brotherjohnnyxXxX Před 21 dnem +1

This series is based of the novel Sisterhood of Dune, which takes place eighty years after the Battle of Corrin. So it makes sense to include the feud between the Atreides and Harkonnen. It's meant for anyone who wants to explore their relationship and the origins of the Bene Gesserit.
