    “Difficulty Level: Moderate”: *NOW* it is, now that we’re here watching your video! I’ve just spent the past year reading every. damned. document. that includes the words “salicylic acid” and “solubility,” as well as reading all the arguments in chemistry forums and on beauty and chemistry blogs until I got a perma-pain between my eyebrows!
    I’ve been wanting to make a SA gel (but the hell with the “2%” and “3.5 pH” FDA rules!), and I swear that when I go to sleep, propanediol, octyldodecanol, propylene glycol, glycerin, sodium lactate, etc all swirl around in my brain in a gluey muck … but certainly no SA gel!
    I feel as if I’ve *at last* found my holy grail, and it helps having seen you do it in a video; I’m not certain that at this point I’d have believed it if I’d merely *read* about it!
    Thanks *ever* so much for creating a DEFINITIVE guide to dissolving SA (and the cherry on top is that you happened to make a gel! As soon as I’m finished composing this, I’m gonna do a happy dance!). You are my hero, and looking over the comments, it appears you’re not only *my* hero, either! SA is a bitch, but you’ve wrestled and submitted her, and she tapped out!
    After my dance, I’m off to check out Essential Wholesale as it’s the least I can do to reward you for what you’ve done. Again, thanks so, so much for helping me and a lotta seemingly other confustimated SA users (or wannabe users who were stymied by SA)! You’re a gem, and I hope EW knows what a miracle they have on their payroll!

      I feel like you were "reading my mail," because I have been experiencing the same frustration trying to educate myself to better skin care/health management. There is just a virtual sea of "disjointed" information out there that is difficult for the average person to piece together in a useable manner. It is migraine inducing, sometimes! It is reassuring to know that I am not the only one who feels like their wheels have been spinning fast but going nowhere. A year out from your comment, may I ask, did you try it, and is it working well for you? I'm excited to try it, myself!

    • @EssentialLabsOfficial
      @EssentialLabsOfficial  Před 4 lety +9

      I was able to dissolve 15% salicylic acid in propylene glycol.
      If you make a solution first of propylene glycol and 15% salicylic acid, you can then determine how much to add to your water to reach the maximum amount of salicylic allowed. The maximum allowed is 2% of your formula/recipe.
      You could also use the recipe provided and replace the alcohol with propylene glycol. You will then need a preservative - you could use 1% Optiphen plus.

      So to reach the 2% number, you'd use that 15-SA+85-PG solution as 7.5% of whatever recipe (15/7.5=2)

      You want to actually weigh out your alcohol, not measure it in volume as weight is a more accurate way of measuring. Please read the blog linked below for our explanation of this issue. So if you have 2 grams of Salicylic acid and you want to have a final 2% solution, you would need to weigh out 100 grams of alcohol. And then yes, use it all in the recipe (-:

      Glycols are organic alcohol. SA only dissolves in alcohol. Ethanol, isopropanol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, etc. Sodium lactate is the salt or the sodium part of lactic acid. Therefore no it won't dissolve and will crystallize.

    Hi and thanks for the great and necessary video 👍. I'd like to mix salicylic acid powder with an aloe vera gel to make 2% aloe vera body gel. First, I'm gonna use glycerin to dissolve the salicylic acid powder but do I need to add some sodium carbonate and citric acid too for pH balance and how much, while heating up the mixture, before I can blend the glycerin-salisylic mixture with the aloe vera gel or is that ready to be used without any of these two extra ingredients? You mentioned something about pH. 3.5 and sodium carbonate.

    • @EssentialLabsOfficial
      @EssentialLabsOfficial  Před 4 lety +1

      I believe you mean sodium citrate OR sodium bicarbonate. Sodium citrate can basically be replaced by mixing citric acid and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). The regulations state that products sold on the market cannot be below 3.5pH, so not only is the sodium citrate being used for helping dissolve the salicylic acid, but also adjusting pH.

    • @EssentialLabsOfficial
      @EssentialLabsOfficial  Před 4 lety +1

      In the case of sodium citrate and salicylic acid (SA), it is about solubilizing. At pH levels below 3.5, you often get SA precipitating out of solution and FDA regulations require pH level of above 3.5. As for the question about additional ingredients to support another, it’s a very broad question as there are many ingredients and many supporting ingredients as well as contraindications. You would need to research into each ingredient and the final product outcome desire.

      Per cent literally means 'per hundred'. Take 2% and that means 2 per 100 or 2 divided by 100 which equals 0.02, now take the total of the salicylic acid solution example 75g, multiply 75 and .02 which is 1.5g of salicylic acid in the solution. Add total weight of the other ingredients in the formulation example 50g to the weight of the solution 75g which is 125g total. Since you have 1.5g of salicylic acid in there then divide 1.5g / 125g which is .012. Multiply .012 by 100 and you get 1.2% salicylic acid. No matter how much 2% you add it will never be more than 2% in the serum because it is getting diluted. You need a stronger percentage to dilute down to get 2% total in the end.

      You should not need the sodium citrate at all, this is just an option for this particular formula.

      Essential Wholesale & Labs hi thanks for getting back to me...I managed to dissolve it in propylene glycol without the citrate and I put it aside as a stick solution though when it came to adding it to my formula it crystallised again....I tried heating my formula before adding it too yet it still crystallised...it made no sense as to why the stock solution remains fine but when adding it to a formula it crystallises...have you any idea as to why this may be? Again thanks for taking the time to reply to me it’s much appreciated

      @@bellavidahana for example my formula is: glycerin 10%, propylen glycol 63.3%, sodium lactate 5%, water 19.7%, salicylic acid 2%. Although I'm still working on decreasing the propylene glycol and increasing the water and maybe the sodium lactate too, but I haven't had time to try a new formula. But the last time I tried, those percentages worked perfectly. And I mix then all at room temperature, first the SA with the PG, then SL, then Glycerin, when all that it's completely clear i add the water.

    Does hyaluronic acid normally re-precipitate in water? I dissolved hyaluronic acid in water and it turned into a satisfying thick gel for a couple of days, and then a layer of white goo appeared at the bottom of my potion, the water became fluid again. If I shake it well for a few minutes the solution becomes thickened, but then again it split into water and white matter at the bottom. Is this how hyaluronic acid behaves normally? Or I have bough some strange thing?

    Hello, please answer my question, Now the pH of salicylic acid is 2.4 does it mean it needs the products’ pH to be in this level so that it could be effective? If I raised the pH to 5.5 like our skin’s pH won’t it be effective?

    • @EssentialLabsOfficial
      @EssentialLabsOfficial  Před 3 lety +2

      Salicylic Acid is a Beta Hydroxy Acid and a larger molecule than Alpha Hydroxy Acids.
      Unlike Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Salicylic Acid is able to perform effectively at a higher pH, and actually is better for the skin than a lower pH salicylic acid product.
      Without getting too technical, the amount of free non-dissociate salicylic acid is not a factor in the efficacy of the salicylic acid.
      In fact, the lower the pH of the solution of salicylic acid, the more likely you will experience skin irritation and barrier disruption.

      SA is not an easy ingredient to work with and can easily crash out of water. Before writing off what you’re doing however, have you checked the pH of the final product? Adjusting the pH might help thin it down. I would start there first.
