    The ancient Greeks for sure: Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, Pythagoras, Archimedes, Alexander the Great, Homer...
    In Sweden, Theodor Kallifatides (author) and Alexandra Pascalidou (journalist and author).
    No idea about the current/recent Greeks they mention but I've heard of Theodorakis and Vangelis.

    MARIA CALLAS! Thankfully, at least one mentioned her. A pity it's only the vlogger. These Greeks should have heard Callas' voice in the spectacular opening program of the Athens 2004 Olympics.
    How about Bartholomew I of Constantinople, anyone? Kapodistrias? Anna Komnenou? Vangelos? The last ever Byzantine Emperor Constantine XI?
    For the Greeks of old, you have Socrates, Plato, Aristotle -- the philosophical triumvirate. You have Homer and Hesiod and Sappho. How about Xenophon? or Plutarch? Saint Luke himself is Greek. Saint John Chrysostom is Greek. How about the philosopher Zeno of Citium? Diogenes? Plotinus? The general Pericles? The mathematicians Euclid and Archimedes?

    I am 16 years old, I live in France, I am not of Greek origin, I have never been to Greece or Cyprus, and if I learn Greek, it is thanks to Eleni Foureira. She really triggered my love for the Greek world, and its language. From there came a huge passion for the island of Cyprus, which made me want to study to be able to work there. I have known her since 2018 thanks to Eurovision and my dream is to meet her or to see her in concert, just as I dream of going to Cyprus. Thank you so much for your videos, they help me a lot to continue my Modern Greek courses, I don't live in a big city and I don't have a lot of money, so I have to learn alone and it's easy to get discouraged quickly. Fortunately, by watching your videos, I realize that I am progressing even just a little bit!! (and now I can understand some parts of Eleni's Greek songs haha) Σας ευχαριστώ πολύ ❤️❤️

      Nana Mouskouri and Vicky Leandros as well. But the most famous from all Greeks, I mean, such small "artists" don't even come close to our old, ancient ancestors. It's our "curse", our destiny to be living in shadows as one author put it, since, we will never be able to surpass our forefathers. Truth to be told, it's a little bit of a hubris mentioning current singers instead. There's also the heroes that freed us from the Ottoman yoke, but them will remain in our Greek hearts anyway.

When Nana was last in Melbourne (she did some concerts for her 80th birthday) , she was asked about this in an interview and she said you can be a proud Greek and try different things from other cultures but some Greeks don't feel this way, that somehow when you go abroad , you're less interested in your own culture. As a Greek, I think that the most famous living Greek person internationally has to be Yianni Antetokoumpo, and the most famous Greek internationally from all of recent Greek history is Mikis Theodorakis.
    And if we’re also counting Greeks from ancient times, then it’s either Alexander the Great or Cleopatra.

    I think that all over the world the most famous Greeks (contemporary years) are Maria Callas and Mikis Theodorakis. Who could not have at last heard of them once? Especially Mikis with his Zorba theme which is still used a lot.
    Speaking of myself, the first Greeks I can think of are also Vangelis, Demis Roussos, Irene Papas, Aristotle Onassis.
    *Fun facts*
    The "Hymne" of Vangelis here in Italy is well known because has been for long time (during the 80s and the 90s) the theme for Barilla's commercials, and most people actually recall that as the "Barilla song".
    Most of the people of my generation (I was born in 1984) had to learn how to play it with flute in second grade school.
    The song have been used again after long time by Barilla in some of their new commercials (2020/21) to remind the old ones.
    Bonus: In the "Masters of Pasta" and "The Party" commercials, Barilla used the Zorba's theme.
    They must love Greek artists :D

    • @EasyGreekVideos
      @EasyGreekVideos  Před 2 lety +2

      I remember the Barilla commercial with the Zorba theme! It was kind of strange for a Greek to watch, I have to admit!
      Regarding Theodorakis and Zorba, it's true that the music itself has become much more famous than Theodorakis himself, but I'm sure only a small percentage of people who'd recognize the music would be able to name the artist who wrote it (and in Greece it's strangely not what he's most known for). That's why I also wondered at the end of the video if it counts towards an artist's fame when one of their creations becomes much more famous than themselves.
      Do you know what Vangelis' Barilla Song is called? I'd like to look it up!

    • @francescausai2058
      @francescausai2058 Před 2 lety +1

      @@EasyGreekVideos Search for "Hymne", that's the song from Vangelis :)
      Yes I agree, I also didn't know the composer when I was younger but definitely knew the Zorba's theme. But happens many times that the creation is more famous than the author and in my opinion that counts too.
      Another example: I first knew the amazing Vangelis because of the "Blade Runner" OST, and searching for other songs of his I found "Conquest of Paradise". I can't count how many times I've heard that one, but didn't know the title and neither the composer.

    Interesting diff view to foreigners. Socrates, Plato , Pythagorous, Alexander. In modern era Zorbas?, Big fat greek wedding girl, and international politically surely Yanis Varoufakis is the most well known and important figure in today's world, crucial for survival of both Greeks and Europeans.
