    I use the old remote sometimes, kind of fun & old school. I have the app and Love it, very easy to use. The best part is I can create a lashup in seconds just by tapping around on ipad. Try that with the remote, very slow and time consuming. Great video sean

    Great video Sean! Great advice on the speed limit setting. I also learned the hard way when my brand new Atlas Genesis P42 almost went airborne after I accidentally touched the screen near the 120 smph indicator. Managed to cut the power before disaster struck. But I was surprised that this overrides the acceleration setting. With my Lionel Legacy engines set on high momentum (slow acceleration) I can turn the Cab 2 wheel to 200 and it would literally take almost 5 minutes before the engine reached that speed…plenty of time to correct the error. Doesn’t seem to be the case with MTH.

    Sean, great video idea. So nice for you to share your experience and help grow the hobby and show what is indispensable for many of us. Hopefully, mth's new controller with give us even more options when its out in the next 9 months. Gary

    Very interesting. Having an old phone that you can download this app to is probably the best way to go. I would think, though, that MTH would offer a touch-screen style controller, similar to a phone, that would have all of the capabilities of the app. It would keep your phone from being cluttered-up and free to perform other things, like taking calls. It seems like a way of offering you a new system, but being cheap about it by having you use your phone, which you already pay for, as a controller. It think that Lionel Legacy is going this way, with their new system, also. At least you won't need a tether to use a remote with the Base 3. Either way, an excellent video, as always.

    Great video Sean. I bought the WTIU recently. I tried the app and it’s nice, but I still prefer the remote.

    Sean, ThankYou for your time and effort. This was an EXCELLENT EXPLANATION of the App. best advice, old phone MTH WiFi. Question, I assume you have the Basic App?

  • @northpennvalleysteamrailroad

    I find the remote is less flawed than the app. But still cool!

    Sorry i have another question do you need the TIU. for the app

    • @seanstraindepot
      @seanstraindepot  Před měsícem +4

      Yes, the MTH DCS Wi-Fi unit plugs into the MTH DCS TIU. App sends command to Wi-Fi Unit then Wi-Fi unit passes that to TIU, then TIU sends that out to the train.

    Really enjoy your videos, and love the engine, I have the Maryland & Pennsylvania version of that locomotive ( #26 2-8-0), I am from Harford county MD originally, I live in PA now, and this is my homage to the Ma & Pa Railroad, me and my daughter have a blast. However, I have a MTH DCS question - I am working on my layout and I have the have the WIFI / TIU / Power unit in the middle of my layout. I am in the basement, and my layout is approx. 4 sections of - 4x 8 foot tables end to end. I have a small yard at one end, and a single line that winds through the rest of the way and loops back on itself at the far end. My issue is that my locomotives will lose connection to my phone app at various spots along the way, and they just keep running at the last setting. I am am still in the early stages of the layout still working on the kinks with running ,tracks, and the trains before I start making the layout pretty. Any suggestions would be awesome, fyi, I am using tubular track 027.

      Are you sure it's the phone app? That sounds more like a signal issue from the TIU. Usually caused by not enough electrical drops to the track or under sized wire gauge. When MTH DCS engines lose their signal, they just keep going on whatever the last command is they received. How many drops do you have and at what intervals. It is easy to test. You can run an engine and watch the signal strength to see where the signal drops, then just add another track feed. The app is simple Wi-Fi to the Wi-Fi module, but it's the TIU that issues the signal and commands.

      @@seanstraindepot Many thanks for the heads up, I have 18 gauge wire. I will add more drops to the bus line and see how that works. I am guessing, but I have a drops every 4 or 5 feet of track. I will look over the areas where i drop signal. I will share a few pics of my Ma & Pa when i get things sorted out. Many thanks and have a great day.

    • @seanstraindepot

      No, the MTH Wi-Fi unit creates a wi-fi network.

    • @TheTrainboard

      No, and once you get wifi in your home, the mth wifi remains a stand alone wifi, not overloading or interfering with you home wifi. We love it. Gary
