Before we start, It’s important to understand that puppies have very small bladders and when they have to go, THEY HAVE TO GO. So a new owner must learn to observe their puppy.
This does not sound very hard; Puppies display tell tale signs that they are interested in eliminating. To house train a shih tzu, you need to pick up on their body language:
✔ Sniffing
✔ Circling
✔ Squatting
Once you see any of these signs, Take him out right away...
Scheduling and consistency is very important in potty training your shih tzu puppy. Young puppies will naturally need to eliminate after certain events:
✔ After eating or drinking
✔ After playing
✔ Upon awaking from sleep
✔ At other times, at least every 1 ½ to 2 hours
A regular meal times are preferable for putting the puppy on a regular elimination schedule.
Other 2 things should be decided before training shih tzu to poop / pee.
the first one is deciding where you want the puppy’s bathroom to be. Whatever you want to train your shih tzu to poop outside or inside, always take him to that location. Stay with him and praise him when he goes. Whichever location you choose, it is important to be consistent. Remember Do not play with them until they eliminate.
Other one is it’s important with any training to have words to use that the puppy will understand. You will want your Shih Tzu to associate going to the bathroom with a word or phrase. So you will need to choose your potty word/phrase, for example “Go pee-pee”, or anyone that you are comfortable saying out in public and in front of guests.
When potty training your puppy, give immediate praise and reward to your dog the moment he’s done. Praising him for a job well done, remember to be effusive in your praise words. You pup wants to make you happy and this will let him know he’s doing the right thing.
Reward your pup with one of his favorite treats. Make sure they’re nice and small, easy for your puppy to digest.
Tips: The potty training reward must be
1)something that is not given at any other time during the day;
2)something that your puppy finds to be extra delicious;
3)a small enough size - reward should provide an immediate rush of flavor and satiety, signaling a job well done.
Accidents will happen when your puppy haven’t well adjusted. If your dog has an accident, don’t make a fuss. Shih Tzu is sensitive animals and harsh treatment would yield nothing positive. Acquainting him with words like, “no”, “don't”, should make him receptive towards owners.
Scoop him/her up, say the chosen housebreaking words (pitty-potty, etc.) grab the treats, and briskly head directly to the bathroom area.
Even if your puppy dribbles on the way there or just half of the pee or poo ends up outside, give both praise and reward.
Also, it is vitally important to properly clean it. Clean any accidents you find indoors with an enzymatic, pet-specific cleaner to completely remove the scent of the urine or feces, which can attract him back to the same spot to eliminate again.

oh its heartbreaking when they get sad...the rest of the family is quite harsh with him but since im not im his favourite but he had an accident in my bedroom...and he never pees in my room because its also the room he sleeps and plays in..and will bring his toys, chew, and bones and hide them under the bed..in other words we share the room. i stepped in his pee and i called him in and told him no and he did a bad thing and they look in his eyes was just so heartbreaking

I have an 8 week old shih tzu. We want to wait until his next shots before bringing him on the grass. So we have been using puppy pads. How do you train them to go outside? He is using the puppy pad for urine not for poop. In trying to train him to use the pad indoors but it will switch to grass once he has shots.
Take the puppy out every hour, give it time to do its business. Then praise it "good potty outside" and give it a treat as soon as it does its business. It worked well with mine. Be consistent, patient and kind, watch for signs it might have to go and take it outside. Especially after feeding and playing. Dogs learn by repetition and praise and if food motivated even better. Mine would hurry up and go, come up to get their treat. They were fully housebroken at 6 months and used a doggy door as they got bigger. Enjoy your puppy.

My puppy goes poop right after we come back in the house from her going pee. And I try to wait a while for her to go poop but she doesn’t want to until she goes inside... She also wines when she is pooping and it scares me so I will take her to the vet. She poops a lot but it seems a normal consistency but I don’t know why it hurts her.
Cut back on the dry food or get a gravy to moisten the dry mix. You may have to feed her a little less food. Someone told me you can get pumpkin puree and mix it with the dry and can food to moisten and then the dog will not have to strain some much with less constipation. Good luck.

Teach her to sit first with treats and then introduce the leash with treats… never take her out without a leash that lets her relate the leash with getting to go outside as well… hope this helps
