- This video shows the best-selling video games of all time, between the years 1989 and 2024.
The video is a list of video games that have sold the highest number of software units worldwide. The best-selling video game to date is Minecraft, a sandbox game released by Mojang in November 2011 for a wide range of PC, mobile and console platforms, selling more than 300 million copies across all platforms. Grand Theft Auto V and EA's Tetris are the only other known video games to have sold over 100 million copies. The best-selling game on a single platform is Wii Sports, with nearly 83 million sales for the Wii console. In 2023, Minecraft became the first video game to surpass 300 million copies sold worldwide.
Among the top 50 best-selling video games on this list, over half were developed or published by Nintendo; three Nintendo titles were published with their affiliate, The Pokémon Company. Other publishers with multiple entries in the top 50 include Activision and Rockstar Games with four games, and Blizzard Entertainment, CD Projekt and Electronic Arts with two games. Nintendo EAD is the developer with the most games in the top 50, with thirteen titles on the list, followed by Game Freak with five Pokémon games.

GTA 5 is the only game that comes close to Minecraft and is still light years away. Insane
Minecraft made over 300 million copies and raised an entire generation early december, 2013 player i remember all the memories I had whilst playing this game it was really run especially when Pewdiepie, revived it 2019 then in 2020 it was making a comeback than id say 1.16 was the last golden age of Minecraft when 1.17 released everything dropped for Minecraft. It was loosing it players but as of right now i dont play Minecraft that much anymore but it is still one of the most played and sold open world games of all time no other games can compete cause Minecraft has spinoff games aswell i just want to thank this game for raising me and an entire generation for 15 years either way this is my tribute to Minecraft.
I remember people said Microsoft were stupid for paying as much as 2 billions for Minecraft in 2014, 10 years ago.
It's because people thought Microsoft would ruin the game and make it full of microtransactions.

No way are people still downloading the original 1984 Tetris, whereas GTA 5, for example, is listed as a separate title. If all iterations of Tetris are included as a single title, then so should all iterations of GTA, plus others. Not a fair race.

True. All lot of the classics had pick-up-put-down appeal. Perfect for 15-20 when your on a work break or bus trip etc. Not everyone has the time which most modern games require the investment of, and/or the willingness to do so. There will always be a market for instant/short-play games, but many wouldn't make thi list due to not meeting the crieria of the format. Candy Crush springs to mind.
No one actually bought Duck Hunt. It came free with a NES console. And you totally left out 1990s Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy games, which were huge sellers. In fact they're STILL selling to this day.
That's why the Wii sports sales is deceptive ; it came with the system 😭😭😭😭😭

Minecraft is still growing very fast and probably has right now abound 300-310mil sales.
@@GameBusterYT The fanbase for the entire GTA franchise has grown tremendously since V’s release, a lot more Gen Z/Gen Alpha kids are playing GTA V at younger ages hell I was 6 when I first played it you also gotta consider the fact the population has literally increased by 2 billion since MC’s release. The trailer has already topped MC’s, and is the highest viewed game trailer and the quickest growing trailer in 24 hrs in YT history, MC’s sales have significantly stagnated especially in the latter years. I see VI eventually overtaking MC at least a year into its release, 3 years at most.
@@LondonBusMaster Not really overhype tho, even on the Take2 (Rockstar Games’ parent company) earning call, they expected tremendous growth of revenue in the Q2-Q4 sector of 2025.

Have you even played minecraft? You can literally create your own story, it has no need for one. Also there is still a lot of effort put into it. I don't even play it anymore and haven't for ages, but I still know it's one of the GOAT's of games.
The thing is Minecraft is a weird game to understand dont go into Minecraft seeking action packed experience or thrill.. it's enjoyed for its simplistic design and it's simplicity surpasses all the action games out there in terms of fun:)

Diablo II and Warcraft III was my childhood man I thought these things were way more popular, looks like not really but whole village was playing it xD (needless to say everyone had a burned copy so yeah warez so that makes sense)

Very interesting watch, but with a caveat: Looking at the data sets over, I think some titles have been amalgamated with their spin-offs, updates and sequeals, such as Tetris. Whereas others have had their sequels/spin-offs listed as separate titles, such as GTA. A fairer race would have been if all titles which were obviously linked to the original were amalgamated.
There is a distinct problem when including game console pack-in titles. Because it is impossible to know how many of those games wouldn't have been purchased otherwise.

Not rly this is what was recorded you can take is at Ilustrative numbers.. older ofline games get pirated more then sold and they didn't get there free to play games even tho overwatch which is now a free to play is there or games which were free when some deals came so it is ilustrative and Most of the numbers are smaller then reality... (i personaly expected nfs 2005 to be there as it has 19mil recorded sold units and it is a very old game) today roblox has to have at least 1b , same for fortnite, or even things like genshin will have 100+millions.)

In all of these statistics as in most sold console, most sold game, ppl forget about the total revenue these companies make on their product, it does shape the statistic totally different as for instance something like wii sport was included with its console so it didn't bring much money, Tertris was a cheap game, gta 5 is sold in the end around 10$ or less but get money with micro transaction, Minecraft is half the price or less as normal games etc.

funny how nobody can come up with a better game than minecraft xD so i was thinking what does minecraft get right as someone who has never played it beyond the first room when i was helping my ex's kid learn the game.
1. highly replayable
2. create your own world
3. play with your friends
4 play in your friends world
5. you can make your own game inside the world
6. its cheap
7.the graphics arent special, this is a good thing apparently
8. it was online
9. marketed very well including lets players and twitch streamers/ merch / toys/ etc
10. aims for younger audience, who will play the game all their lives (mcdonnalds stratagey)

It lets you do whatever you want, however you want, within an almost infinite world. The only limits are, essentially, the players’ imaginations.
the game isn't cheap if you have THE minecraft and practically and yes there are games which overcome minecraft but never will be told lets say Fortnite or roblox.. even tho they are free to play they generate more revenue, play time and also have more players...) (there were 1billion players active which doesn't make sense to me???)
I'm not saying fortnight is good or that I have played it, but I know that it was pretty prevalent in the late 2010s.

Terrible, GTA 5 has one of the weakest stories of all GTA games but the success of the online is what drew all the sales. It so sad because ever since Sept 2013, I hated the game. Enjoyed the online a lot but the story and map were both a chore. It's one of those games after I 100% it in 2013/2014, I never touched it again. The story is just so boring on that game. Trust me, go play it, youll give up after 4 hours
