We are a little mislead by the overwhelming dominance of rodents in the "small furry omnivore" niche, but we see over and over in evolution that most animals can trace their origins to a rodent like animal, even humans can. Probably it's because these kinds of creatures best survived the extinction of the dinosaurs, but also because it's a viable strategy.

@@ohboy1113 I am a master's student in evolution, and actually the fact that hyrax are related to elephants is like one really easy thing to explain, there is no such thing as "not being able to explain that relation". @@ohboy1113 No problem you could’ve let your comment.
So about wings, «how» is a difficult question. First, I don’t really know what kind of wings you are talking about, as this flying appendage has occured through evolution many separates times (that’s what we call a convergent evolution). Also I don’t know if you want me to say when the appeared, on which species… Anyway it appeared on a theropod dinausor that is an ancestor of all current birds. It also appeared on the common ancestor of pterosaurs even if they all died out 70 milion years ago. The last known clade that got wins from evolution is bats.
I’m not talking about things like insect wings etc because of how different they are physiologically

@Oh Boy Arboreal! Think flying squirrels or sugar gliders, creatures that can't fly but glide from tree to tree. The same concept exist for birds, we believe they initially started out using there wings to glide and eventually evolve to fly.

nothing could have prepared me for the hyrax open mouth pic. When you’re expecting something like the mouth of a rabbit or mouse, seeing that gaping maw is a little distressing lmao. what weird little guys 10/10

The prairy dog also has syntaxes and different chirps for woves , dogs, foxes, hawks, different colors etc... like the scientists discovered they had a unique chirps for the gender of the scientist as well as the color sweaters the wore. Very very complex
Must be convergent evolution in its finest

I knew of this creature, vaguely, but honestly had no idea there was several of them and that they were a bit different. Neat. Evolution is weird. Is there any way to compare that relationship to something like humans to chimps, or whatever is actually closely equivalent?
