Still the Best Backpacking Headlamp? | NEW! Nitecore NU25 Headlamps

Nitecore sent me the new NU25 headlamps to try out. Are they still the best ultralight headlamps on the market?

- Two different styles
- UL (ultralight)
- Sports model (heavier headband)
- Weight (slightly heavier than older model - hard to compare, since old model weight didn’t include headband (1.9oz with headband on old one) - need to weigh them all)
- UL: 1.59oz
- Sports: 1.98oz
- No longer has 1 Lumen “moonlight” mode - changed to 6 Lumens
- Slightly more confusing button/operation configuration
- Still has lock mode - long press both buttons (don’t like the flashing light to indicate locked mode)
- Red light will cycle through some white light modes (Mix, Spotlight, Floodlight) - not really a fan of this one. If you’re wanting a red light, you want it to avoid white light. Why mix those?
- Really like the shock cord headband option - also, the shock cord is reflective!
- Like that it’s now USB-C charger instead of old version (micro USB) - fewer cords I have to carry into the backcountry
- Old = 360 Lumen max, New = 400 Lumen max
- No “Turbo” mode
- Throw is shorter in new version (70yds vs. 88yds)
- Max run time is 45 hours (in ULTRALOW mode) vs. 16 hours with old version
- Much better battery level indicator (old one was flashing lights and I could never remember what each pattern meant - now, it’s just a scale)

Simply going to USB-C and the new battery meter would have possibly made me get the newer version but I don't like any of the other changes. I really like the warm flood light as well as the ultra low light settings on both the red and white light which was removed on the gen 2. Ill be sticking to my original gen1 NU25 and hope nitecore goes back to the drawing board before it quits on me!

Tim, what’s ironic is this review sounds just like a conversation I had with a couple buddies who come from the same area of my past career. We were all looking to pick up a headlamp and I suggested the NU25 because of yours. When we looked at the new ones, we all were disappointed at the changes made. Not a fan. Hopefully they’ll revert to the old design & setup and incorporate the long battery life of the new one.

The 400 lumen mode does not last long, I continue, but at 200 lumens it is capable of giving several hours without reducing power?thanks!!!!
