- A young girl prays for divine intervention.
SAN MIGUEL is used with permission from Cris Gris. Learn more at crisgris.com.
Ana is a 9-year-old girl dealing with her young brother's recent death. Her mother is also in the throes of intense grief and has become almost entirely inaccessible to Ana.
To help heal her mother, Ana prays to God to help ease the pain, but to no avail. Her mother only goes deeper into her pain, causing deeper rifts in the family. Feeling desperate and alone, Ana decides to court divine intervention in her own way, to break through the impasse of grief that has frozen the family emotionally.
Written and directed by Cris Gris, this dramatic short uses a sensitive and economical naturalism to capture both a young girl's attempt to process an unthinkable loss and the atmosphere of religious belief and faith that surrounds the family.
Considerable delicacy is used in picking just the right image to encapsulate Ana's increasing isolation. The young girl's milieu is both lively with color and heavy with shadow, captured with camerawork that is beautifully attuned to Ana's inner world and emotions. Though she says very little, the audience always knows her thoughts and feelings, thanks to this intuitive camera and editing.
The camera also pays documentary-like attention to the small details of Ana's Mexican town, and to how spiritual belief and religious piety are imbued into the fabric of this community. All kinds of rituals and spiritual interventions are available at any turn in Ana's world, and faith in God and saints are a palpable part of everyone's lives. These are woven naturally into the film through the narrative action, as well as through a richly layered sound and musical score.
Ana may be a child, but the emotions of death, afterlife and loss are just as huge and paralyzing for her as they are for her mother. And yet she's unable to be seen or heard, perhaps because she is so young. Young actress Melissa Pena Rodriguez offers a restrained yet evocative performance, as a young girl seeking meaning, comfort and understanding but unable to find it anywhere. In the vacuum of any guidance, and emotionally left to her own devices, she asks God to intercede with a show of faith that may only lead to more calamity.
Selected for the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, SAN MIGUEL is a compelling and ultimately heart-wrenching portrait of how we make sense of devastating sorrow. It's also an intimate, richly specific immersion into the director's hometown of Monterrey, Mexico, where the film was shot. Amidst these ambitious themes, Ana's intimate story stands out for its exquisite sensitivity to the inner life of children, and also how easily the world overlooks this. And in its final, devastating moments, it also makes clear the costs of this short-sightedness, when we can't see or address the pain standing right in front of us, hoping to be heard. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
My mother was despondent after my father died from cancer. We three children were deserted as her alcohol addiction took over. My father had tears streaming down his face on his deathbed begging her to take care of the children. My eldest sister took us into her home and saw that we we finished school and got on in life. We understood her pain and we all forgave my mother unconditionally. Life was worth living and dad would have wanted us to go on and be the best we could be. Can’t wait to see him again some day in heaven. ❤️🙏🏻
Beautiful 🙏🏾💙
Same 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻miss my Dad soooo much
God bless your family's soul.
The mother comes across as selfish in her suffering. She still has a living child that needs her.
agree
Film maybe
As a mother of two children I whole heartedly agree....however if I may say so grief is ugly and can swallow you up no matter who you if you let it.
Don't judge someone if you haven't experienced that level of grief.
A mother's grief at losing a child must be horrible, but her indifference toward her daughter led to her losing both of her children.
The trauma that little girl was carrying, her being the one with her little brother ,when the unthinkable happened..
Also, she lost a playmate. She was hurting, too.

Poor little thing...😢...trapped by fate and circumstance...in her own way, suffering as much as her mother...
@SURREY CROSSING *I see now why my mother likes my brothers better then me-*
@SURREY CROSSING It’s fine-

This was one of the best short films - no, best films - period. The story, the acting, the cinematography, they were all top-notch. A riveting plot takes us on a journey to a grand conclusion. Thumbs up!
and what is the conclusion?
A very sad story ... reality... she got hurt badly or died . Also how dangerous religion can be when you test your faith by putting a life in danger. The girl was torn apart by the mother and her own guilt by witnessing the pain her mother was going through. Depressing and religion did not save her that is an insult .Results in more consequences, faced by testing it that way!
Yeah i agree
"testing it that way!"
if that's the wrong way, how would you like to test it?
@@papaunderwater3316 okay, would you have also liked her to JUMP OFF a 10 story building and hope that doesn't kill her? Should she have tested it in that way?? You KNOW what she meant by that. To pray for an explosive not to go off after you lit it is NOT the right way to test your faith.
@@detrajackson5992 I find it bizarre that you seem to be offended at my Q, so much so that instead of proposing a "right way" to test ones faith you just repeated that "it is NOT the right way".
"would you have also liked her to JUMP OFF a 10 story building" this seems oddly specific, but no, I wouldn't
"You KNOW what she meant by that."
I resent fact that you talk as if you know what I do or don't know.
consider
what good is faith in god who can do anything if asked, if one is never to ask for the most important thing - proof that this god is real
because surely if someones head explodes and then grows back, that would be a pretty good indicator that it is real
and I'm not asking anyone to explode their head, I ask to think what good is that faith if one purposely tests it only for things of little consequence
@@papaunderwater3316 Perhaps a greater test of faith would have been for her to realize that her specific prayer request may not (from God's perspective) be the best answer to the situation...Perhaps the mother had to experience this deep pain and loss to better understand her own relationship to her daughter or to God, and the daughter's lesson was to have the patience and strength to let this take place. People seem to demand that God to bend to their will...His plans are deeper than our understanding.
Ana deserves an Oscar. She has the making of greatness in her!
Very very enjoyable short. Couldn’t stop watching. Sadness and hope intertwined. Great work.
“We can’t expect god to do all the work”
- Joshua Graham
I can’t imagine being brought up in such a blind faith, so bound in rituals & trappings of a religion that everyday life is overwhelmed by it. Yet even in the darkest hour it brings no comfort. Poor child
I was relieved not to see the ending though.
yeah a blown up head and a mother that just realizes she had an other child but she failed in taking care of her
One of the best short films i have watched on Omeleto.
You can hear the kid scream and fall off the building in the beginning onto a car as the car alarm goes off. Great editing.
I thought for a sec that the lighter wasnt going to light. That would have been a whole different story/meaning.
Imo the mother killed (or at least hurt) her child not religion. She was selfish in her grieving and forgot about her living child and her trauma/mental health
Beautiful film, reflects a lot about our grief and beliefs 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I didn't hear it go off sooooo
No telling bro? I'm hoping not 😥
If you see the first firework go off it wasn't big enough to kill if it went off she got hert but lives. But like you said i didn't hear it go off ether.

I don't understand how the kid died, it's not exactly important to the plot _how_ but just the fact that he died. Still, wondering.
I think he fell off the building when they were playing tag. At least, that’s what it looks like.
Are you not worried about children playing tag ontop of a church?
@@neilrinaz8586 My thoughts exactly. There was a faint screaming voice when the boy disappeared behind the building. I think it was his voice.

Wow, beautiful imagery.
Poor little girl so alone, so sad😞
Since they didn't show the ending, you can write your own. In my version, the thing never exploded. The little girl took this as a sign and it reassured her that her mom will be okay.
Impressive beautifully made film. Loved the colour got nostalgia feel to it. I was very like this girl when I was young. Brilliant film
Left me speechless... so sad
"Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" Matthew 4:7
do not put my words to the test is what any swindler says
Why not? Is God fragile enough for mere human tests? The way I see it, her faith overcame, and the firecracker didn't burst.
@@sodiumsalt ?"her faith overcame, and the firecracker didn't burst."?
so the firecracker was a dud because she "overcame it with her faith"?
how does that work?
@@sodiumsalt because the Bible says so:)
On the contrary. God is Great, Almighty and All Powerful. Now to answer your question. The word "test" here isn't implying a measurement of strength... a better word would have been "tempt" or "entice". Meaning, you should never intentionally put yourself in harms way or purposefully engage in a dangerous situation (such as holding a firecracker to your forehead) and then expect God to rescue/deliver you from your deliberate act.
Don't put your trust in useless trinkets, dolls and statues because you'll be disappointed and they won't save you from your troubles (Isaiah 46:6-7) (Psalms 115:4-8).
How right you are Hope. This was one of the major reasons why Luther broke from my Catholic Church and took the best part of Europe with him.
@@catholiccrusader5328 you should probably look into how many Germans in 1930s-40s ware either catholic or lutheran

The little girl is in the church at 11:45, and the background choral voices begin singing chromatic vocal excersizes at half step intervals going up. They can't do better than that?
What do you expect them to sing? It's warm ups.
Did the girl just died at last because of the fireworks!!!?
@Elly The Elephant same
u won't die from one of those, although you'll get a nasty burn. But the whole point is we don't know. If you have faith maybe you can believe she was saved, if you don't believe in god then...
It's an open end. I want to believe the fireworks didn't work and nothing happened to her.

The mood was well portrayed . So next time I will try to be on the ball “Turtles can fly “is a very, very good film . This short reminded me of it ... we need to be sensitive to the sorrow of others: the earth and her children are in peril.

The pain and trauma death causes is awful and should be banned
You wanna ban death? What have you been smoking dear?

The pathetic laws of humans can't control that stuff.
I know religion is good for some people, but this blind devout behaviour is just too widespread for it to be worthy to exist. Poor little thing & her mother needed support from her family not god, damn it !!!!!!!
Idolatry is so bizarre.

@@TheAstroflight um that's a bit rude don't you think 😬
@@TheAstroflight This story has got nothing to do with religion. It's about a grieving mother who couldn't see that she's not the only one suffering.
@@TheAstroflight what’s mainly shown here is pagan Mexican spiritual practices that don’t align with the catholic faith :)
@@andreslara2377 it’s not that, come on sir. Mexico does not have enough education as others do. So they are only able to learn the basic of the Catholic Church. The reason they use statues and things is so they can get a somewhat understanding of the saints and of God. Now the ritual thing to wash the bad energy is absolutely not allowed in the Catholic Church. But due to the traditions going around from ancient tradition prior to the colonization, some things are still kept and poorer parts of Mexico.

Probably but with 90 degrees burns

what? no. somethings wrong with your screen
Is this a commentary of how religion ultimately fails us? Or how we fail each other?
It's about grief, and how we shouldn't put God to the test.
Wow. I can't possibly comment (but I am) about someone's religion I don't understand, but I can disagree. Still good! Haha
you don't need to understand more than this: most religions prey on desperate people, their grief, fear of death and hopes for being with loved ones once again

I'm at 12:57 and the silhouette of St Jude looks like the devil.
nice catch! she did sin to get the figurine, so maybe she ended up bringing home lucifer inadvertently
Why does she believe destroying a saint figure would help?
It's not that she thought it would help, she was angry that the saint she had so much faith in didn't accept her offering. (the tortilla)
Crazy.
She's a kid? She doesn't do things out of adult logic?
Because most people don't implement religion the right way, and accordingly don't teach it to their children the right way. The child in this film thought a prayer would be granted immediately, then when I didn't happen, she broke the saint out of anger, in this situation both actions were wrong. But the child is a just child and not to be blamed, it's parents as I said who hold the responsibility of following the correct path and correct teaching. The concept of God is usually misunderstood and controlled by fear (in most religions). Fear is human's first enemy that destroys everything.
I couldn't stop laughing when she put the firecracker on her head and didn't let go 🤣🤣🤣🤣
the absurdity of religion.....
And that's why I don't believe in God anymore.
