  • This is a video to help you get started with relief printmaking. I cover basics of setting up a place to carve, how to use a linoleum carving tool, transferring a drawing and carving techniques. This is a demo video for my Printmaking I class, showing their first carving project, which is a Sampler. I hope this is helpful for printmakers at beginning skill levels develop their carving technique.

Please do a video with some more detail about how to compose the design for the block. You briefly mention a grid in this video. I would love to know more! Thanks for all the info!!

Hi Jacab - I'm back (soon) teaching Face to Face, so I'm sorry but don't have time for another video. Basically I just gave the students the prompt of 6, 1" grids arranged on the page as they wished. They could carve and leave a clear grid, add a border, or have some patterns morph across grids. I also recommended looking at some ornament books and around them for interesting patterns.

Thank you for these videos - they are really helpful - I am new to carving and printing! Is there a template available for the sampler block to use for practicing cutting skills?

Hi Teri - Thanks. No, no template, but if you just measure directly on the block, it's pretty easy to create grid. Experiment with different compositions beyond a simple grid, although they work well too!

@@sarahwhorf Thanks Sarah! What size are you using for your sampler block? I am wondering if you have any tips for cutting sharp inside and outside corners? do you offer online courses?

@@tpasto Hi Teri - For the project in the video, the block is 3x4". Using an X-acto in the corners will help give you crisp edges. No, I don't. For now it's just these videos and my continued teaching at Cal Poly Humboldt.

Hi Deborah - No, sorry I don't. You might want to take a workshop from Bonnie - www.bonnie-stahlecker.com/. She's amazing.
