  • Designed by Erling Poppe as a ‘luxury’ motorcycle, by the time it went into production the car-influenced twin was both overpriced and (relatively) underpowered to a nation that wanted affordable ride-to-work motorcycles. A lack of ongoing development ensured sales were poor throughout its life and they disappeared forever in the mid fifties. Once maligned, they are now enjoying a new lease of life as practical classic motorcycles. Very reliable and capable of huge mileages, these shaft-driven all alloy OHC machines have a cult following from people attracted to the unusual design, extraordinary comfort and ease of use. IMHO they should have chrome plated the tank and mudguards, made it even more luxurious and branded it as a Daimler or Lanchester, appealing to the very wealthy ‘non-biker’ type of leisure & lifestyle motorcyclist, the post-war equivalent of the modern Harley buyer.

I remember in my childhood having this motorcycle always being started from a steep descent. I wish to get a ride on this one someday.

Bro, green light is not for "neutral"- it shines when oil pressure is critically low. Nice vid, cheers:):)

How hard is it to find parts for these?

Stewart engineering in Dorset are S series Sunbeam specialists. As with most old bikes I’d recommend buying the very best example you can find; it’s easier in the long run.

@@paulmiles the Sunbeam has always been one of my favorite bikes. I like the black a lot, but that sage green color they come in is really nice. I don't see many of them come up for sale near me in the states. When they do, they're not cheap. Someday I'll snag one.

25hp 6:1 Twin bet it doesn't charge so much as lope along.

It’s very much a gentleman’s motorcycle, the perfect bike for cruising around on; no races will be won, however!
