You forgot to say 1 2 3 please don't blow up.
Or "This video is brought to you by Sporlan. Quality. Integrity. Tradition."
That's why it blew up
He needs to bring back the old @@lloydcollins6337
Thanks to this guy every time I make a repair I say that when I put the disconnect in, love HVACR videos
@@Richard-zz2cblol
You forgot to say the hvac prayer first, "1 2 3 don't blow up on me. "
but, you said it to yourself right? lol
Always
Are you sure this is an exhaust fan and not a "grease all over the roof distribution unit"?
that's hilarious
"Make yourself different from the next guy..." Great advice and a highway to success.
Exactly
I jumped, too. Who let the smoke out? 2:46
It was me 😜 I Did it 🤣
Seeing and hearing crusty old forgotten fans trying to start up is certainly one of the best parts of this channel for me 😅 even better is when there are noisy, broken compressors involved or the coils need a good clean with the Refrigeration Technologies yellow venom pack!
Those fans had plenty of grease just not the lubricating kind 😅 You had your week covered on just that roof😅. You are 💯on the using all your senses! Not gonna hear much if you’re jamming out while up there. Great job!!
For something like that with an impeller fan and it’s okay if it runs backwards for a bit try it both directions and the one with the higher current draw will almost always be the right one. Useful when you can’t be there to see it spin as in your case.
Chris actually broke something neat! 😂 Been following you for years dude please do a autopsy of that blown motor. Im legitimately curious on what blew up
Well you got me to scan that QR Code in the thumbnail, lol.
That looks like a nightmare of neglect
This video might end up being evidence in a fire investigation. That exhaust system is a fire hazard.
Bro you let the smoke out of that first motor. No wonder it doesn’t work…
"Smoke on the Roof, Fire in the Sky" 🙃
It’s Obvious to your Viewers that your Customers more than they Pay for so they and your Viewers are the Lucky ones that get to benefit from your Experience. Thx!
2:42 for the fun!
2:42 Factory smoke charges scare most people, including me
I work on a lot of Captiv Air hoods and the screens on the front of the hoods supplying the make up air get clogged with dust and dead flies over time. It’s not necessarily the screen portion seen from standing under them but the additional tri-folded screen attached to the top side of the screen you see at the hood. I hope this made sense. Keep the vids coming Chris!
3:50 You know you can stick a Probe in the back of the wago connectors? They have a hole the opposite site from were the cable goes in for that exact purpose
I will discuss this on my livestream this evening 6/3/24 @ 5:PM (pacific) come on over and check it out czcams.com/users/liveso0bVDtjyLs
That motor with the bad starter looks like someone tried to oil the bearings from the outside.
"Heater" style overloads (~@2:20) require a table of the "heater" options (based on Motor load and Contactor size) on hand, because the little interchangeable "heaters" aren't marked except by systematic catalog numbers. They're still manufactured, but the builders of new panels usually use something that can be dialed in (an Overload relay module).
That's good to know
The health department must have overlooked that restaurant too.
with all the grease they prob had a duct grease fire trying to start
Oh no the magic smoke came out
Furnas controller, OLD school.
Did their regular filter company not mention that EVERY MAU was not working? Even if they were not responsible for those units their situational awareness must suck.
Ear plugs, welding helmet, safety gloves, and “1, 2, 3, please don’t blow up!”
Good job Chris......
Great job Chris i hate working on roof fan always a greasy mess. Thanks for all the great videos.
Wow.....all that stuff was in less than desirable condition. Luckily they have Dr Chris HVAC PHD on the scene. 😊😊. Another top quality job.
Lol, Thanks
Guess: the motor at 2:41 ran hot for a long time where for years it was fine, but broke down the coating on the wires causing shorts
Please clean up the bottom of the enclosures with a vacuum or something similar - noticed a lot of screws and metal shavings in one motor enclosure - please leave it better for the next guy who opens it up
God bless you
Great video. Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!
17:04 You're passively looking for issues while your on the clock that will eventually lead to disaster so you can fix them during normal hours and try to avoid on behalf of the client emergency work orders during overtime.
Triage sucks for everyone involved, technician and client.
If the fan is that dirty, how bad is the duct to it!? wow.
Lack of a high quality PM .Negative air situations do not make things better. They need a new Captive air PSP system. Great video Chris n
Great job 😊🙌👌👍
Thanks Bud
Looking g at everything you just went over I would have given a quote for all new u it’s
Thanks for posting. Seams like a lot of owners neglect needed maintenance? Also let us talk about the massive Restaurant closures? Your thoughts?
7:28 looks like standard grease breakdown into base oils (synthetic cruft) . never have I had more issues with "grease" in my life, since they went full/semi synthetic in the last 20+ YEARS.
the last 10/15 years the grease they claim is great is utter trash, it dries out/separates with all the oils exiting leaving only bad soaps and gritty material that would normally keep it's fluidity, thus help it lubricate. when that's no the issue, the "rubber/synthetic rubber" gets eaten or breaks up in no time making the "joints exposed and wear fast"....
Looked like on the main Makeup air the oily ends of the motor is from someone putting way too much grease into the bearings. Just today I was on the roof of a multi business building noticed a different unit had no condenser fan moving but humming. Told the store about it and was wondering who their service contract was with. They told me they will put in a work order for the problem and gave me the number for the corporate office to call for becoming an agent for the business company.
Very cool
I have a question. So you need a makeup air unit to maintain air balance when the exhaust fans are running. My question is with the makeup air units off, is there a damper that closes that prevents air from coming in through the ducts? Otherwise I would think air would get pulled in regardless if the makeup air unit is running keeping the building balance. When that one makeup air unit was running backwards, the amps were lower suggesting that there is no damper or anything restricting airflow. Also with the AC units the fans run 24/7 in occupied mode to help with air balance but do you have to really run the indoor fan 24/7? If the unit gets an OCP signal that should open the outside air damper (regardless if the fan is set to on or auto) to its minimum position allowing air to come in the duct via the air pressure in the building. I would think that that would slow down the rate air filters get dirty as many of your locations have this issue leading to freeze ups, worn pulleys, and other issues. What exactly is the logic of forced makeup air versus passive air? I'm sure you will talk about it in the live stream but I am curious with your insights with this.
I will discuss this on my livestream this evening 6/3/24 @ 5:PM (pacific) come on over and check it out czcams.com/users/liveso0bVDtjyLs
scared me too!
Puff goes the magic dragon 😅😅😅😅😅😅
on the fire Radio i would here Mill valley ca McDonald's would have a grease fire over there main grill because there vents were no cleaned and the exhaust unit was on fire
Isn't that why you're supposed to turn on the switch with the right hand?
Do you rope your bag up or carry on your back? I’ve had a lot of roof hatches less than 1ft lol
Well, to be fair, the chaps over there have far less experience about keeping their hoods clean.
Also they don't have Lucas magic smoke in their supply houses
Just a garbage parade this one. The entire rooftop collection was beat down.
2:42 you forgot to say 123 dont blow up also jump scare
Lack of maintenance is the enemy of efficiency. Lack of efficiency is the enemy of profit. Penny wish and dollar foolish.
5:50 - I betcha most, if not all, of that vibration would be gone if the blower wheel were fully degreased. It might have lost a balancing weight over the years, but I'm leaning more towards poor upkeep.
7:41 - Without knowing the history, either those bearing seals have failed, or someone went a little overboard when greasing them. The motor certainly looks old enough to convince me of the former.
With all them exhausts running, close the doors and that building will go badly negative. We need those make up air units to balance the system out, probably slightly positive I should imagine.
Good point
Wouldn't a negative air balance exacerbate the smoke not being pulled up the exhaust fans because it puts the building into a vacuum causing the fans to work harder?
Good question, I'll discuss this a bit more on my upcoming live stream Monday night
yes and if there's stronger exhaust fans(clean/belts tight) it could be even worse for some.
Yeah, the exhaust fans and make ups are balanced together to meet design. Without the makeup fans running youre getting less than design because of what you pointed to. I had a trouble call where the workers turned off the make ups to pull ac air into the kitchen. I showed the owner the difference with the hoods by turning the make ups on. The roll out stopped and customers could open the front door without yanking on it like they were starting a lawn mower.
Those fans are greasy bro, I almost fainted when yoh tried to turn on the first makeup air
This is one of those moments where I find myself absolutely stumped. The injection point of the make-up air unit is within the same vent hood as the extraction point of the exhaust housing? In my mind, that's exactly why smoke would be "rolling" out of the hood; the exhaust fans aren't pulling air from beyond the cooker that's generating the smoke, the smoke just rises up and hits the proverbial "wall" of a closed, self-serving system. My poor, simple little brain cell is struggling to understand why the system would be designed this way in the first place...
because the kitchen staff will cry "wah wah wah" endlessly since there would be hot/cold air blasting out into the kitchen full time. in general you go to makeup air units instead of supply fans for air entering the kitchen outside the hood.
exhaust only without supply air, could become low enough to have smoke roll-out, especially if the building goes negative and other fans are much stronger(clean/belts tight/etc.)
@@throttlebottle5906 Thank you for the input; I hadn't considered the shear volume of air these exhaust hoods are moving. I'm more familiar with residential environments where makeup air is plumbed through the HVAC to maintain the conditioned zone, both in temperature and air quality.
Big picture diagnosis
Man if you switch these things on without decontamination everyone in the building will suffer.😁
What do you guys think of Reznor systems, no affiliation here, just a building engineer wanting to know.
On a kitchen exhaust system, how do you reduce the power on the system. When it turns on it pulls up the filters.
Im going to try and discuss this on my upcoming live stream this Monday
Why the hell do they have belts and not directly driven? Must be very old fans?
I will discuss this on my livestream this evening 6/3/24 @ 5:PM (pacific) come on over and check it out czcams.com/users/liveso0bVDtjyLs
You make me miss restaurant PM's lmao
Lol
should have said the famous 123 please don't blow up @ 2:43 lol
5:59 - How would you go about cleaning that without getting crud back down in the kitchen? Would it have to be removed from the curb?!
they generally have hinges so they can pivot open to around ninety degrees, so it's then horizontal and off to the side of the duct, cover the duct opening and go to town cleaning.
but it doesn't really matter, as they'll shut the kitchen down to clean all the ducts and hood too.
Yes, thats basically it, its a simple but dirty dirty process
15:13
The owner should be held responsible for their equipment I mean does California has a law when it comes to safety that’s fire hazard 🚩 fortunately you didn’t get ⚡️
Junk!!!!!!!!!!
I miss the old opening theme, the new one is like a annoying movie theater add
Yea me to
